to answer some questions:
yeah, the drives together in a RAID0 amount to ~150GB. I had no problems whatsoever...setup the array in the Highpoint BIOS and then partitioned and formatted in XP.

also, I picked them up at B&M...the clerk printed two receipts and gave me two rebate forms...I wasn't aware there may be a problem...

well I asked because the rebate says it's limited to one drive per household. And did you try using any coupons on both of the drives when you were picking them up at B&M?

Just got mine in today.

Gotta love ups. Guy drops one box off, picks up two!.. Saves me the trouble of having to drive down to the ups station!

Anyways, I got the D540X model too

HD model - 4D080H4 this one is made in singapore.

This is the # everyone is after.. the part # on the box is

KIT: K03H080G .. there's another code halfassed sideways (rotated 90 degress), says H4D4

UPC # (don't understand why no one's posted this so far!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

7-51921-02741-5

Many thanks to the OP of this thread!

Funny thing, 2 60 gig drives in this machine came from staples about this time last year too!!!

THANKS!!!

I went into my local Staples last night and they wouldn't honor my printed-out coupon. So I went back this morning and tried again with a different manager...and no problem! Great deal--after tax, I paid only $68!

darn. its still oos on the site even though for the past few days it has said

TEMPORARILY OUT OF STOCK! ADDITIONAL STOCK TO ARRIVE APPROXIMATELY 5/23/2002

they dont say APPROXIMATELY without a reason i guess. well today i went to office depot and picked up a maxtor ata/100 pci card (it has 2 ports, 4 devices total). i already have 3 hard disks and a cdrw on my computer so i need more ide ports for this new drive i plan on ordering once it becomes available.

i could go and try it at b&m but its 15 minutes away and i dont feel like getting turned down.

but i got my first pm today. for the ide card it was 39.99 at office depot. on tech depot it is 26.95. i just mentioed that and the guys pm'ed to it. i didnt bring a printout or anything since i wasn't expecting to go there today but just happened to go.

Rebate says that item must be purchased by the 25th...never used rebates on an online order, if I ordered now, would it count? Beings that its OOS, is the purchase date when I place the order, or when the item is available or whatever.

I would think its when you SUBMIT the order. I placed my order on the 19th, it got shipped on the 20th. My shipping packing slip shows the 20th.

Since its a staples sponsered rebate, I would contact them.

Also, keep trying through out the day.

I tried at least 10 times yesterday at various times. One of the times I got in, item shipped today, so it should have today's date on packing slip.

Keep trying, I think they replensih stock often, and update their systems throughout the day.

..funny.. I got two and can't decide which to keep, just need one.

One is the Diamondmax which seems to be faster in access time and has 2Gig more space, the other is a D540X, slower but newer (??!).

I really don't care about the transfer speed, is there anything else I could base my decision on?

I understand that the D540X has double the density thus less platters. But isn't that a greater risk for failure, statistically I mean?

In terms of IF a surface fails, MORE data will be lost.
AND less surface equals more stress on the total surface. Am I right?

My order was also canceled with no notice from Staples. I called and complained just to do my part for the cause. I wound up buying it at the Carson store (California). I used my $30.00 off $150.00 email coupon. I bought some of those $4.00 monitor arm things and a 128 CD case to get me to $150.00. It looks like all the CD cases are on sale with good price cuts and the monitor arm is awesome for $4 bucks. I bought the last Hard Drive on the shelf, but they might have had more in the back.

I don't think failure rates will increase significantly with the newer drives. The performance hit that you take with higher density disks is a higher access time (harder to seek thru that dense data) of course this is offset by higher transfer rates.

If you don't care about transfer rates, I would go with the older drive.

The newer drives might be quieter, but they are 5400rpm so they should both be pretty quiet.

My take on this is the following. The more surfaces you have to spread the data across, the more heads you need, and thus data should technically be xfered faster.

On the other hand, with high density, once the data is found, more of it can be read per unit time. Which is faster? Will let you know after I get my PHD.

with regard to failure rate. yes, on a denser platter more data would be lost. But once a platter starts to go, isn't the entire drive pretty much shot at that point anyways?

Here's the clincher though. With more platters, you have more heads, which means a more complex control circuit, and more mechanical parts that can fail (that is after all what typically fails in a drive, is it not?)

Now, coupled with more components, since there are more platters, more heat is generated - which also decreases the life of the components and the drive.

Finally, I think in the end, its a wash. depending on what you need more, performance or reliability. If you need perf you go with a drive thats got both more platters and higher density, if you need reliability, you go raid with parity

Question - when submitting the UPC for rebate, do I need to cut off just the barcode, or the entire piece with the serial number and kit number as well?

Just wondering...

Incidentally, I placed my order Sunday, got it today (Thursday).

mad,

I sent in the entire white label just in case. Maxtor should really have its own proof of purchase rather than it being the entire label, but oh well

Dont cut the whole thing out with the cardboard... use a knife (exacto or similar), cut the perimeter of the label, the use knife blade to life an edge, the entire label will then peel off nicely and can be taped to the rebate form without leaving a big bulge in the envelope (possibly causing it to get stuck in usps processing machines)

Can anyone who received his order recently, check to see if the packaging slip does list the order date in addition to the shipping date...

The HD is available for order for my zip code but with 4 days shipping delay so by the time it ships I will be out of the rebate period.. But if the packaging slip does list the order date then I should be OK

Thanks a bunch

Thanks for your thoughts about failurerate vs density.
Still undecided, I opened the other box too and guess what: it's the exact same D540X allthough the box said Diamondmax w. 11ms seek!

check out
http://www.maxtor.com/products/DiamondMax/techsupport/KitNumbers/kitnumbers.html

"The "Kit Number" (part number) on Maxtor retail kits identifies the Capacity Point of the kit; it does not represent the specific model number of the hard drive that is contained in the kit. "

That clarifies it!
