Ordered my Maxtor drive on Sunday afternoon around 3pm. Got it today (Tuesday) at
8am, via UPS. They (Staples) said, when I ordered it, that it would not get here until
sometime next week, so I am definitely satisifed

Just got mine delivered. it came by private courrier, from a local store. Had all the receipts printed via register, even with rebate forms printed via register, all stapled together! This is great.

The drive is a DX540 series 80GB....better than DiamondMax 80 series IMO. Made 1/2002 Singapore. Looks like an excellent deal!

The outta stock deal worked for me by chance:

Ordered the drive ($120) plus printer cart. ($45) and used $30 off $150 on Monday morning. Checked order today and said drive was out of stock, but CSR said the coupon still applies to the remaining items. Pasadena, CA staples has about 5 drives left. Found a $20 off $100 printable and it worked! Now to the rebate page....

Total savings= 80gigs for $40 and $10 off a printer cart!!

if it weren't for a test tomorrow, life would be perfect...

good luck!

Just got mine via UPS (ordered on sunday). I got the D540X version too, but I am kinda dissapointed. I would have preferd the "older" version cause I want to run two of them in a RAID 0 setup (got a friend to order one for me). The newer ones have higher surface density (40GB per platter instead of 20) but that also means that they have worse (higher) seek times.

DiamondMaX avg seek = 9ms, max sustained transfer = 27MB/s
D540X avg seek =11-12ms, max sustained transfer = 35MB/s
(specs from maxtors website)

I think seek the times go up because the data is more dense on the new drives, and it is harder for the heads to quickly reposition over the exact location of the next sector/track...not sure though

Anyway running them raid I woulda gotten about 50MB/s transfer rates out of the DiamondMax version, which is more than enough to keep up with my main scsi drive for data transfer and more than adequate as a storage drive.

Oh well, at 60 bucks a pop I have no real complaints. This is a great deal.

I have an extra Maxtor HD if anybody wants it. The thing is that I didn't use any coupon to purchase it so if you want it for $120 + tax, that's fine with me. Otherwise I'm gonna return it back to the store and you can try to get it with a coupon if you want. I'm gonna be returning it to the STAPLES on atlantic st. in Long Beach, CA after finals (possibly thursday). The reason why I have an extra was because I ordered one online with the coupon and anticipated long delays so I went out and snagged one in the store. Turns out there was no delay so I got the HD today.

Mine also arrived today, but it didn't have any of the nice reciepts or rebate forms printed out... I'm planning on submitting the rebate via their website anyway, so hopefully I can just print out everything I need (including a receipt...) and I'll be all set...

Just got back from Staples in Newport Beach with the Maxtor and Peachtree Accounting. Here's how I fared:

120 Maxtor 80GB HD
+140 Peachtree Accounting Software
+ 17 Tax
________
277 Total

- 40 Forty off 200 coupon
- 140 MIR for Peachtree
- 40 MIR for Maxtor
________
57 Total for the Hard drive

Add Ebaying the software into the mix and you get a 80 GB HD for around 30 bucks. Hells yes! Very hot.

Has anyone had any problems setting up a raid array of more than 120GB, I know that there are/were various maximum disk size restriction with older bioses and OSs, but I am running windows XP and have a K7T266 Pro2 motherboard.

I know win XP should support up to 2 terabytes (32bit addressing) and I know that 28bit bios adressing limits\limited individual hard drive size to 128GB (138 if you use GB=billion bytes) and I know that the new 48bit addressing on ATA-6 drives fixes this (newer maxtor drives use this).

But I was wondering how this plays out when 2 individual 80GB hard drives that are seen as a single 160GB drive...I figure the OS should be fine seeing a single drive and that the bios (raid bios) should be able to see both drives and therefore not have problems.

I will probably get this set up on the weekend but I was just wondering if anyone had any comments or suggestions.

my local staples had the altec lansing speakers, peachtree accounting, modem, mouse, tdk cdr's and 3 maxtor 80 gig 5400 rpm hdds on the shelf. you can use the printable $30 off 150 or $40 off $200 (with peachtree) to fashion your own deal. Check your local staples (YMMV)

I'm wondering, would any of those 20 off 100 dollar coupons work in B&M Staples? What I'm worried about is that the coupon says that copies/facsimiles are not valid. It's also not valid if it's on downable software, services, business service provider or custom-printing service provider web sites etc.

Thanx

MdkExecutive:

I just purchased two of these badboys to RAID...and n00b though I may be, I'm having some troubles:

The Highpoint controller (Iwill XP333R) sees the drives just fine, but the MaxBlastPlusII software that comes with it to setup and format the drives doesn't appear to see the drives...it insists I have no drives on the machine.

No problem, I'll just format the old fashioned way...except the drives show up as ~74GB and I can't find anywhere in the RAID BIOS to set cylinders, sectors, and heads manually...

i went in and placed an order on the 20th and got a 4 day shipping time, so i thought i'd check the local store. they had 2 in stock, but it showed a <11ms, rather than a 9ms.. (thought i read that altho it seems to be gone now.. whatever then) used a $20 off $100 coupon (the ones w/ bar code on em, and also got 2 of the tdk CD-Rs. they were $19.99 but mine had a price tag mistake to $14.99. no inst rebate like the website. (it printed out a $10 rebate, so it worked out to $5 a piece if the rebate comes through.) the tdks were the only ones on staples shelf w/ a made in japan on it.

i also got a email confirmation, the other item i ordered with it showed up on my door today, so i'm keeping my fingers crossed, hoping it'll show up. the night before i got it, it did show a OOS status.. so who really knows..

The coupon I got was huge, so I shrunk it down and, fortunately, some resolution was lost so the "no copies" part was hard to see. Some workers think it's an email coupon and don't even read too much of the fine print.
good luck

Got my second drive delivered yesterday by UPS (ordered Sunday around noonish).

This is a different drive from the one I picked up in the store sunday afternoon.

The one from the store is a D540X while this one is a D536X.

Has anyone else tried reading the "SMART" info for maxtor drives lately? I use a program called "speedfan" to read the smart info from these drives and noticed something alarming.

The "Hardware ECC Recovered" field is constantly increasing at a fast pace. and the "health" field decreases at a fast pace.

My D740X 80gig I picked up 1.5 months ago, is down to 50% in the health field, While the D540X I got on sunday has dropped down to 95% in 2 days!

Performance values for both drives are still at 100%.

This may explain why I find a lot of my files corrupt and have to reinstall a lot of my apps.

None of the maxtor diag programs find anything wrong with the drives though.
None of these drives have any bad sectors either. And windows XP doesn't seem to find any problems when it checks the disk for errors. Yet my files are still getting corrupted.

I'm not overclocking anything in the system. And this happens on both the onboard IDE as well as the maxtor ATA133 card. I've tried 5 different cables and it doesn't seem to make any difference.

I haven't had a chance to install the D536X 80gig drive yet, so I don't know if that one will have the same problem.

Can others download that speedfan program and check what their HD SMART fields say?

I'm a moron...disregard my previous post...I woke up this morning and realized that "80GB" != 80gig...instead "80GB" = 80,000,000,000 bytes. Base 2 math rocks.

Anyway, both drives I got were 540's, for what it is worth

So are you saying you got it to work, are you running raid 0 now? so I assume your toatal capacity is about 150GB (the stupid hard drive manufactures messing with the system to make their drives semm bigger).

Any special steps I should take?

Got notice today that they were out of stock and couldn't deliver mine (ordered Sunday about 11:00 AM). Went to my local Staples on the way home, and they had 3 in stock. I bought one with my $20 printable coupon (found it at FW). After tax and rebate, this will come to just under $70 for me. And I can put my old 40 Gig in my custom built digital video recorder. Awesome deal. Thanks.

I ordered mine on Sunday. Added a PC100 controller card and used a $30 off a $150 order coupon.
Got a confirmation and said that delivery would be on Tuesday by UPS.
Got a call Tuesday morning to say that the PC100 controller was OOS.
I returned the call and the rep said the rest had shipped, but because my order no longer
added up to $150 the coupon was removed. I was pissed. I asked her why in the world did they
ship the order when a major part was OOS. The order should have been put on hold until I released
the incomplete order. She said that this was their policy and she didn't know why the order shipped.
I asked her to add an item onto my order and re-apply the coupon. She said there was nothing she could
do about this order. She said I should refuse the UPS delivery and re-order with the new items.
One problem. They were out of stock of the drives. I made a huge stink and she said she could place the
new items I wanted and give me $10 off that order and then send me a $20 giftcard. Still not good enough
if you ask me, but I wanted the drive so I accepted the offer. If the giftcard gets here this week I will buy the
UPS thats $10 after rebate with the giftcard.

Got the drive and it's a D540X.

Yeah, they oos the lamp and the hard drive on me. I checked online and they still took the coupon off . The funny thing is I had a rep call and tell me that my lamp and cdrw (she meant hard drive) were out of stock but they would still let me use the coupon. That means my order was $32.35 - $40 rebate =+$7.65. Its ok, I went and picked up another hard drive from staples b/m a few days ago just in case.

I'm thinking of picking up two of these drives from B&M and I'm wondering how I can do it so that I can get the 40 dollar rebate for each drive. Would it work if I did it like this?

1. Buy the two drives in the same order and use 40 off 200 dollar coupon (total should be about 200 aftere coupon excluding any tax)
2. Make a copy of the receipt I get so I can include one receipt for each drive
3. Mail one rebate submission under my regular home address while sending the other rebate submission under my cousins home address. I'm still trying to figure out whether I should use the same name on both or use different names.

Will this work? One possible problem I'm currently seeing is that they might reject one of my rebates since they can see that I bought two of the maxtor drives.

The other alternative is I can try to buy the drives on separate orders but I'm not sure if I can use the 20 off 100 dollar coupon twice.

What thoughts do you guys have or suggest? Please respond as soon as possible since this deal is coming close to an end.

Thanx
