To those of you that are going to try updating the firmware, when I first tried it with mtkflash155 (version 1.55) it didn't work. It displayed
"Flash type: Unknown Flash Memory"
and then the flash process sits at: 00%

Thought I messed up the drive. A search of the CDfreaks forums showed others with the same drive and same problem.
Memorex 48x24x48 to Lite-On 48246S
The fix was to use mtkflash148. Tried v1.48 and it worked without a hitch. Running 52246S firmware rev 6S08.

got one from staples in milpitas, CA ... there were two hiding behind the sony cdrw drives (dunno how they got there since it's behind glass display -- probably employee's trick). left one for whoever wants it
also the guy who checked for the stock (since we couldn't find one of these although the computer said they have two) told me that the staples in santa clara (near sj airport) has 5 of them as of 17.00 (5 pm)

in addition to that, i got myself some cd sleeves and folder for around 15$

and the guy actually gave me 110% PM instead of 100% .. dunno why, but i won't complain -- although that made me end up buying another cd sleeve (5$) to bump the price back to 40$ again

anyways, if you're looking for things to bump the price to 40$, there's aurora calculator 4$ and 4$ MIR, as well as 100 cdr for around 2$ (after 20$ MIR and some instant rebate)

total cost 35$ after PM and coupon

Thank you for posting this deal, I was really fretting over spending 70 for the Lite-on 52X, and this on is just 30, cleared up all my problems. The manager was fine with it, but the worker bees were pissed, and was trying to tell me that the one on the web site isn't the one that they had on the shelves. This was of course before they checked the seriel and part numbers over and over again, to make sure that it was right. Then after 40 minutes later it was in my hands, and some lady saw what I got and the price and she used me to get the same thing. And she didn't have to get harrased for 40 minutes. I just called Staples.com to ask what the policy was about going to B&M Staples to get the drive since they were OOS and she said thet it's up to the managers discretion. The fact that it's OOS and that it's a "clearance" item makes it un-pricematchable. Is that a word? Anyway, I will try tomorrow. I had the Staples near me set 2 aside. The worst they can do is throw me out of the place on my ear with no drives. Also, I was unable to find those aforementioned coupons on any of the usual suspect sites either, hmmmm. I'll report what happens tomorrow.

FYI:

If you happen to live in CA, go to LA county, they will pricematch with their website. All STAPLES at Orange County can't pricematch with their own website as of 12/20/02. They received a fax from HQ not to pricematch this item. One of the manager at Orange County give me a hint, he ask me to go to STAPLES at LA county. He said that some of them haven't received the fax from HQ.

Just got back from the Willow Grove, PA Staples. I checked the web site this morning and it's still priced at $29.90 and says in stock, so if they check the web, it's still golden. I had 2 drives set aside, went to checkout and pulled out my printed web page and they almost had a heart attack! They checked SKU's, model numbers to no avail. Then I popped in the 10 off 40 and got my 2 drives for $52.30 including tax! LOL. $26 and change for this is a smoking hot dealio. THANKS!
Staples is going to ban me from their store. I cashed in on the Antec 1080AMG for super cheap too.

I went to the Santa Clara Staple and they were sold out. I was thinking what the heck, let me try the one at Milpitas. To my surprised, I saw one behind the Sony cd-rw. I had my brother look for a clerk to open the glass lock while I guard it. The clerk can't open up the glass case..lol... he needed to open the glass case to the left of it and act like spiderman to pull it out. The cashier won't pricematch..told me I need a copy of the printout on the web. I told her to holdon to it while I drive to my cousin to print it out. Got it finally for $28.03 out the door... ( overheard the clerks saying to each other that it was suppose to be held for one of the other employee, oh well...)

for anyone that couldn't get their local staples to pm dot com, try your local best buy. they have the buslink 48x12x48 for 29.99 no rebates (online price still 79 i think). i opened the box and there it was!!! a 48x24x48 on the faceplate. i haven't plugged it in yet, but i'm pretty sure it's a lite-on looking at the model number (LTR-48246S). and looking at the thread on cdfreaks, it's possibly upgradeable to 52x. hurryy!!! mysticman you da man!!!

Just went to the Farmington Hills, MI store and scooped up 3 of these. Added the $15 off $75 coupon and I was good to go. Before any of the greedy comments come out, these are for friends and family, not just myself. The salesman about sh!t when he saw the price from the printout of the staples website. The manager said, "yeah, they lowered the price a while ago, we just didn't get around to it here in the store." I hope everyone else has good luck with finding these. Enjoy.
