the 8x BenQ can be flashed to burn 8x DVD- media but it will cost you $10 and it will only burn at 2x DVD-R and 2x DVD-RW.

Yep. Dual-Layer burners. I think at the end of February? Lite-On announced theirs at an MSRP of $199. Thats 9.4GB per side.


Now when Blu-Ray or something like it comes out.... 27GB /disc (or something like it)

The price of the drive sounds reasonable for a dual layer drive, but do you have any idea what the cost of the media is? If the media is more than $5 a disc, I won't be buying any for a while. I don't mind the amount of data that you can store for $5, the thing that would worry me is burning a coaster at that price. I think I'd stick to RW's to start out with.

I wonder if Office Max will have substitutes once they run out (OMax all way does).

It would be great if they still have those Pacific Digitals (LiteOn/BTC). I still want to exchange a shrinkwrapped/unopened BTC for a LiteOn. Got 3 of those last time (1- LiteOn, 2 - BTC) for about $86 each.

DL burners will be out in spring at earliest. Lite-On has not announced any model yet so I would like to know where you got that price info from? And it's not 9.4 GB per side, it's 8.5 GB.

From the other thread on the Khypermedia 8x drive, the theory is it would be a Benq drive if you find a box that says made in Malaysia otherwise it would be a Cyberdrive (China). I t seems to be dependent on geographical regions.
