Dead monitor

I've been away form my computer for three weeks and I came back to find that the monitor is not working at all. I tried another monitor in it's place and it works fine. I tried hooking the dead monitor to another computer- nothing. The symptoms are just simply that it has no activity at all, no power light, etc. It's about 5 years old. Do monitors die this way? Any suggestions?

I have an Viewsonic that died this way after 11 monthes.

One day in the morning it simply did not switched On.

I got an RMA and sent it to Viewsonic, they got and informed me that general label (not the one with the serial number thee is a second lable with serial number and it was there) was torn.

As a result they refused to honor the Warranty.

I sent them the original receipt and whatever else can to proof that indeed it is within warranty.

They point me to the small print verbiage at the end of the manual that mentioned that the labels must be intact.

Apparently, the internal power supplied died.

They were "gracious" enough to offer to fix the device for a price that would be within few $$ from the price of a new monitor.

P.S., I have now a new monitor, and it ain?t Viewsonic.

Does it have an external power brick? If so you can test it with a multimeter.

I'm going to take it in to geek squad tomorrow. If they can fix it for under a $100 I'll be happy.

The guy on the 1 800 number said they do but who the hell knows.

Cool, I wouldn't have thought they did that. I don't know what your budget's like, but you might want to look into a new monitor, or maybe a Dell refurb. Yours is getting kind of old, and a $100 repair could lead to another $100 repair in a few months. Anyway, good luck in whatever option you choose :^)

Do you guys like this this 19" widescreen acer as a replacement? There's an office depot near my house which has it for $189. (BTW, I'm a gamer).

For those that may be interested... geek squad sends out there repairs for a flat rate of $35 (to Chino, CA) and then you wait for an estimate. I've decided to not go this route and just get a new monitor.

Good plan. That 18 inch Ultrasharp might be blown away by even a moderatley priced monitor these days.

OP, 5 years old, you're better off buying a newer monitor than repairing at this point.
IMO these days, PCs are disposable. it's more worth it to get a totally new part than to try repairing an old one.

did you tamper with the monitor at all? were you responsible for the torn label?
sounds like they have a case, but could've honored the warranty out of goodwill to keep a customer happy.

The LG monitor on that page is better and is only $199
It has reviews, where the Acer did not. And LG is a well
respected name.

For anyone who may be interested, I went ahead and bought a power supply from lcdrepair.com for my dead monitor. If the psu is not the problem I'm out $50. I'm gambling.

I understand the opinion that computer components are disposable (as blah said) but the monitor I'm fixing is really a champ. It's brighter and more crisp than $300 monitors you get today. Side angle viewing is very similar to looking at it straight on. I've never seen ghosting and I like 1280x1024. Works great with the x1950 pro.

I'll update for nostalgia after I replace the psu. Thanks for all the great comments.

i have doubts that it beats a 300 dollar monitor today, you can get a pretty nice monitor for 300 now days, bigger as well. esp compared to something 5 years old.

as for geek squad, i doubt they repair monitors. power supplies/backlights/inverters are a pain to replace. and well if your backlight goes out and its replaced, who knows, the psu could go out next...or the inverter... which is why after a certain point its just better to replace.

Just including this in case someone has a similar problem...

I bought a power supply from lcdrepair.com and the installation was easy (just a bunch of screws). Total cost was under $50. The monitor works fine now.
