Should mention that this is the older 6121 modem, and not the newer 6141, which is the one to get. It supports twice the downstream channels as the 6121.

True, but unless you have 150+mbps cable service it won't make any difference. For the vast majority of people this is a good deal to get out of the monthly modem rental fee and won't be a bottleneck for years to come.

this is true, and if you happen to be on TWC you get a free speed bump because they are morons

i have the 141, so do a bunch of friends of mine and everyone of us has gotten a free speed increase by going to a DOCIS 3 modem

i pay for 12/1 i get 30/2

good deal!

I still use the SB6120 with Comcast (3 years old) and it does fine at 50/10...

I don't see how the mentioned SB6141 can be faster when it's still a DOCSIS 3.0 modem? Is "channel bonding" part of the DOCSIS spec or just something proprietary that TWC is doing?

its parts of DOCIS the reason TWC uses should see a speed increase with any DOCIS 3 modem is because their back-end is crap and when it sees a DOCIS 3 modem it just auto bumps you to that tier of speed regardless of what you actually pay for

case in point my buddy just got rid of turbo and dropped down an entire tier, i think hes at the 15 meg down one now. installed modem gets 30, which is faster than what he was getting when he had turbo.

we both live in western NY were i think 20 down is the fastest plan offered in most places

The nice thing about this modem is that it is officially supported by all the carriers. Comcast gives the 6121 3-star certification, while the 6141 only has one star. I have the 6141 which will work on Comcast, but it took a long amount of time on the phone to get it working. I was also supposed to get free 3mo trial of "Blast Extreme" service from Comcast, but they don't have the correct configuration to make it work with my 6141, although it works on my friends 6121. The 6141 might be better for the future if the speeds get faster but for now the 6121 is OK.

DOCSIS 3.0 doesn't specify any specific transfer rate. Channel bonding is part of 3.0. All 3.0 specifies is that a device must have at least 4 channels (about 43mb/s per channel) to be considered 3.0. The 6121 has 4 channels while the 6141 has 8 channels.

Its a good modem unlike their Modem/Router/WiFi all in one that is horrid.

I've heard that quite often, but not sure why. I currently have the extreme tier from TWC (30/5) and they loan you a SBG6580 with that. I have no problem hitting the speed caps whenever I feel like it. I only use the wireless for my tablet and phone, so nothing demanding, but I've never had any problems with it either.

We had their 30/5 speed and tried 3 different modems that TW supplied - with every one we would lose the signal about 5 times and hour. Finally had to step back down to the 15/2 speed with the earlier modem. Never get disconnections with that. They redid all the wiring from the pole all thru the house to the modem and couldn't solve it. Tempted to get one of these and try again as that was about a year ago, but don't know if it will be any better.

My phone is not compatible with google wallet (htc one on t-mobile) and newegg isn't giving me the option to pay using google wallet at checkout. Am I missing something?

The SBG6580 is DOCSIS 3.0, and pretty decent, and it it meets your needs, then no real reason to upgrade. Comcast gave me the SBG901 all-in-one, and it topped out around 25/5. The main reason I wanted to upgrade to the 6141 though, is that I like to use my own router, and it was a pain trying to configure the all-in-one to work only as a modem and not a router.

I've been wanting to replace mom and dad's modem so they aren't paying that rental fee. Might as well.

Sounds pretty straight forward provided the registration works whenever first installing the modem, but even if it doesn't you can just give Comcast a quick call to register it. I'm not missing anything am I?

Oh, lame. It's only with "Google Wallet"? I was thinking of "Google Checkout" lol, guess I'm out. Though I could maybe do it with BlueStacks, dunno.

Yea, I have the same service with the same ISP. It handles 30/5 just fine, but its routing features are awful. It resets the connection to the entire network too often for my liking, and its WiFi range is horrid at best. Luckily I just had TWC put it into bridge mode, and I have my own router and WAP handling those tasks, and its sooooo much better. No drops and much better range.

I don't use it as a router, all I have plugged into the modem is a TV and an Asus N56U which I use as a router. Both the modem and the router have wireless networks active. Not necessary, but never been a problem so I never bothered to turn the modem one off. I've never had a problem with dropped connections with either. I'm not sure what you mean by resetting connections. I've not heard that term used.

Anyone know if Charter Cable will let us buy our own modems?

So what's so special about that SB6121 modem Charter is making me pay monthly for compared to the one on sale? What makes it more "powerful," "reliable" and "secure?"
