I still can't believe these simple RAM modules are as expensive as some good CPUs like Athlon XP 2500+. I mean it must be some unnatural limiting of production to keep the supply down and the price up, because these simple electronic devices that any POS company can make cannot in your worst nightmare have even 0.00001% the complexity of design that CPU has got in it, and therefore should be 10x cheaper at least. I know demand for memory has increased greatly this year, but still it's almost obvious something funny is going on here, as these things probably cost no more than $5 to make. I predict a collapse in memory prices coming soon, the manufacturers right now are still trying to squeeze every last cent they can while the supply demand equation is still artifically manipulated so they can charge these prices.

man somebody had too much red bull

memory was one item that experienced the least dramatic price drop and the most fluctuations in terms of prices.

for some reason, RAM hardly ever go down in prices, with 3200 being the norm and 3500/4000 now for OC'ers, you'd think 2700 RAM be dirt cheap., not true.

so is SDRAM, some SDRAM for older desktops i would think should cost 5-10 bucks now with DDR being the most popular type now. again not true.

even if we see DDR2 get more exposure, DDR ram probably wont see any super-discounts.

back in early/mid 2000 I bought a 128MB PC133 CS2 stick of RAM from Crucial.com for $178 including shipping. At the time I scored a good deal on it because it was a week where the price was under $180. About 6-8 months later (maybe a little more, I can't remember the exact date) I bought another stick of the exact same RAM from crucial.com for $80, because the price had dropped so much and I thought there was no way the price was going to continue to drop. A few months later the exact same stick was under $20 with free shipping. Then Windows XP came out (memory hog) and unsurprisingly the price of RAM quickly started going back up as demand went up. Ultimately I believe that yes, they are making a very nice profit on RAM, however the market supports it so it's the way it is

it may be high now, but this cannot hold up for long as new capacity is coming online. 1 GB will be $50 by the end of the year.

Well lots of DRAM manufactures are still in red, it probably costs a lot more than $5 to make a 512MB PC3200 module

Is this based on a certain report or article....cause I would hold off my purchases if this is for real.

I don't have a definite source to point to except that I remeber reading about Toshiba getting ready to open a new memory chip plant this year.
My opinion about prices is mostly based on the fact that the actual manufacturing cost should be quite low, and there's hardly much R&D costs, so given adaquate capacity, the market price should decline to just above the manufacturing and r&d costs. The problem right now is that manufacturing capacity is limited, thus keeping supply low comared to demand, and prices high. But the free market would correct this automatically, by giving manufactureers incentive to increase their prodcution capacity.
In my opinion this is already happening, and after a period where prices moved up in the last year or so, we again haved started to see prices go down (recently). And as new capacity comes online, the slide in prices will become more steep.

Also, as a reference check out what happened to flash memory prices - a year a ago 128MB card used to cost $50 on average, and now 1GB costs not much more than that. That a 5x price drop, and a good sign to what's gonna happen to RAM.

careful with these. i recently bought one for my abit bg7 but my board doesnt support the 2.5-4-4 timings. Had to sell it and now i bought another 512meg stick of mushkin that could do at least 2.5-3-3. I tried running the 2.5-4-4 at 2.5-3-3 on a 187mhz bus and got many errors in memtest86. Best i could do was ddr266 at 2.5-3-3 with no errors.

and who exactly is mushkin ? is it some huge electronics manfacturer from the far east or a domestic giant ? maybe a japanese corpotation, or perhaps taiwanese, korean I wonder, for god's sake even malaysan or indonesiam will do (even though it's starting to be suspicious). No, I don't think so. It's probaby just some small time biz doing oem with some generic factory.... paying them no more than a quarter of what they charge retail, and pocketing a huge profit. Yep, this RAM business is over sturated with profiteering right now, and this has got to stop.

so I gotta ask, just how much do you like the sound of your own voice ? This is a hot deals forum after al and I think most people would rather hear about cold hard prices than someone making speculations with no backup.

this is a public service anouncement to help them understand that paying $70 for 512MB PC3200 RAM is not the great deal it might appear to be (unless you are a memory dealer, retailer or gouger of course).

and btw, what do you know about the great pioneer electronics comapny called mushkin ? where is their high tech manufacturing facility located, other than the owner's backyard garage in a mountain timezone state ?

I've never had any problems with Mushkin memory. Everything good comes from Colorado, memory and beer (Coors).

But seriously...Mushkin may be small and not very known, but they have quality memory. I support the little man. Read the reviews.
Besides, I'm tired of all computer companies moving and operating out of California and overseas. It's high time manufacturing and high tech companies start offering jobs in other states. There are a lot of qualified people living elsewhere than California and overseas in China/Malayasia/India. If I could find electronics made in the USA, I'd buy it. Bring the jobs back to the states!!!

Thanks...I bought two sticks to go with my AMD/Asus K8V Se Deluxe bundle.
