My sister wants to buy me a dvd-+rw for my birthday, and i'm going back and forth on the optorite and this drive. Which one is really the best? I read that the NEC one is good if you update the firmware. but i'm pretty conflicted.

are you able to burn an exact copy of a dvd now or is that still not within the capabilities of the current batch of burners?
i heard from somewhere that you have to use 2 discs to copy a DVD movie for example. if this is still the case, I think I'll wait until you can make 1 disc -> 1 disc copies.

I would bet that most commercial DVDs right now are dual-layer. This burner is single-layer. It'll be a bit before dual-layer burners (and media) are affordable.

I use DVD2One, that transcodes a 2-layer DVD to fit 1-disc.
I sit 8' away from a Panasonic CT-32HX42 HD-Ready TV and neither my wife nor I noticed any visible video degradation.
I haven't completed my 96" projector setup yet so I can't tell if video degradation is more obvious on a big screen or not, but from my experience, compressing a 2-layer DVD to fit a 4.7GB recordable is no big deal.
I don't care about menus, bonus materials, or subtitles, so I usually leave those out. That allows more room for image quality.
