Finally, after 4 days and about a dozen CSR's.. I finally got one on the ball and PM'd to Comp USA for $99 +5 S&H for $104 total.... then I go to use a $30 coupon and find out they removed it since it was a code that was suppose to be sent out to new staple card members only. Not having any luck and the old places I used to look for codes and deals at as well... anyone know of any place I can find em anymore? While 104 is good... 74 is better

You must have superhuman hearing. I don't notice a difference at all. But I am now enjoying the pleasures of a slave drive

Wow.. it sounds like your HDD is lagging really really bad. (or maybe the hdd is just that loud.)

What are you running to test it? None of my hard drives sound that bad. That's what my compaq from 2-3 years ago sounded like

Actually, that was the wrong video, that wasn't the one from when I was starting the computer, that was from when I was defragging. Normally, it doesn't make that much sustained noise for that long a period of time, but, thats how loud it can get for anyone who was wondering.

damn... not sure if I should open this package now... . I was going to swap out my WD 5400rpm 80 gig for this one, but if it makes that much noise, I'm not sure it's worth it. My other 30gig maxtor (5400 rpm) tends to make loud noises (like yer video) whenever it's writing too. That's annoying as hell.

On another note, WD has much more lienent warrantyy service. I called them up when my 4 month old drive started making a louder noise @ idle (not much difference between writing and idle on the WDs) and they rma'd it no questions asked. Maxtor refuses to rma my old 30gig, because they claim nothing is physically wrong with it (despite it being loud as hell when it writes).

a strong magnet could fix your problem quite rapidly.
or you can start vacuuming near your hard drive...not that you would ofcourse..but theoretically that large motor in a vacuum probably could screw with the magnetized platters and drive head....hmm..

I really don't find it makes any more noise than the other hard drives I've had in the past. I have to say it's much quieter than the IBM Deskstar that I have slaved. When the IBM first boots up it makes a wierd, loud sound... but after a while it goes away completely. The Maxtor doesn't have any problems But it only has been 2 days since I've had it. We'll see what time does to it. I do get great Sandra benchmarks for the Maxtor though.

Still going. Just called up Staples and had them PM to CompUSA and they did. Then I used a coupon $10 of $100 (couldn't find the $20 off $100) and that brought the final price to with tax to ~$99.50. Then you can get the MIR for $20 to make the final price $79.50 If there is another MIR available, can osmeone post a link?

Paid $85 plus tax for my drive. Used $15 off $100 (only coupon that would still work).

Backordered until December 2nd. If rebate doesn't come through or a heck of a lot better deal comes around, I guess I'll just return the thing to Staples.

We shall see.
