Well, hopefully Dell has the same amount of pull as Gateway (or more, presumably).

I ordered around 7pm eastern, and I got my email 2 hours later confirming shipment by 10/04.

I am very psyched!

Also, DVD-R media can be had for as low as 70 cents each in bulk (50-100) for a single-sided disc. However, that's for "1x" media, which takes about an hour to burn the whole disc.

Yeah well Gateway doesn't have them in stock either they are saying 3-4 weeks and Sony's website doesn't have any shipping info either so I wouldn't plan on doing any burning Friday.

Here's a link for some cheap media. Never used it, no idea how good it is. They carry some more expensive stuff too. Maybe try a couple different ones out.

DVD-R media can be had for as low as .89 cents each in bulk.

I have seen some people use a brand called Accu, as low as .69 each. I use Ritek, which will burn at 2x for 1.29 each.

Any idea if Sony intends to gimp the drive by not allowing the copying of certain media? If I recall correctly, that was an issue with some of their CDRW drives.

Okay well you finally did it. I tried that 120GB drive deal at Best Buy and crashed and bombed (out of stock at over 10 retail outlets), I've tried to get monitors, notebooks, and burners before...but this time you guys really did me in. I couldn't resist getting this drive at this price. Also, in response to the copyrighting, I assume that Sony has given up on that as they've added their version of Apple's "Don't steal music." legal disclaimer - "Before copying anything onto a CD-R, CD-RW, DVD+R or DVD+RW, please be sure you are not violating copyright laws."

I'm going to pass on this deal for another month. I want to read some reviews and read about other people's experiences with this drive. Dell always has some kind of deal with 10% off and multiple coupons so I can always wait. I'm guessing that thousands ordered this thing because its on every message board and you guys probably won't get it until January knowing how Dell usually operates.

I think they mean PII 400 and PIII 700 for neoDVD.
It has buffer underrun protection technology, so Goodtogo, you should be fine.
