I had placed an order for most of the parts for my new build, only 2 hours before I got the email with this promotion code. I got on live chat later that day and the rep gave me the $24 credit for the $150 G. Skill Ripsaw X I had purchased. Nice and unexpected.

Edit:
hopefully uncle sam deposits my income tax check friday!!

2am that day, my return deposit came through, 3am order was placed, 5am got the code >.<
normally they wouldn't do a price guarantee on a promotion code, but since I was a "valued customer" (aka spent $XXXX on parts), she gave me the discount lol

I wanted to put off building a new pc until the summer time frame.

Is this the same type of RAM computers will be using at that time? It might be worth stocking up now and buying the rest around the summer.

IMO, DDR3 will likely still be the standard deep into 2012 and maybe early 2013. I had the exact same thought that you have and may yet order some RAM before the sale ends. My advice is that you might want to buy the fastest DDR3 you can afford now. I definitely wouldn't go below 1333 and I'm personally looking at 1600 if I get some.

I'm thinking of this stick of ram:
g.skill ripjaws F3-12800CL7D-4GBRM (7-8-7-24) $65
(http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231303)
-
for a SB build with either asrock exterme 4 or asus p8p67 pro. Is this reasonable perf (bit confused of trade off between timing vs speed but from what I read it is better to go with lower latency. Also I *think* 4GB is enough for games for the next 2 or 3 years (i do not run multiple programs and such on the windows box it is strictly games; a few games will open browser; i use another comptuer for multi-tasking).

Also a bit confused if i want 1.5v or 1.65v (these are 1.65v)

I think IndyColtsFan is right...it sure seems like we'd be hearing about a new ram standard by now if it were on the immediate horizon.

Anyway, I bought myself even more ram I don't need. Damn hot deals!

Last I heard DDR3 was going to be the common standard until 2015. So that DDR3 you're buying should last awhile.

For SB, skip that set and buy a set built for SB instead: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231443. The difference is the voltage, as you've noticed. SB sets typically are being listed at 1.5v. And this set is just as good as the one you linked - I'm sure you could hit 7-8-7-24 if you pumped up the voltage to 1.65v, which that older set defaults to.

Would I be better off spending $5 more and go with these ?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-430-_-Product

(they are the same the original selection but run at 1.5v; i.e, 7-8-7-24 vs 8-8-8-24 for $5 using stock settings)

Makes sense...I personally have the original set you linked (and just bought another paid with this deal) and they run great. As an FYI, Newegg's page is incorrect. They run at 1.6v, not 1.65. (This is according to SPD and G.Skill tech support posts in newegg feedback)

Now very confused; the original reply suggested that 1.5 was required for mb; but you seem to indicate 1.6 will run just fine ? Not 100% sure which MB I will use - likely asrock extreme 4 or asus p8p67 pro; leaning towards the asrock as it sounds like both require bios update to work the only feature the asus seems to have is probably better build and bluetooth but not 100% sure I would ever use blue tooth on this system.
-
anyways the important point is that you suggest 1.6 ram would work fine on either of these motherboards. Then again we are talking $8 (the others are not free shipping) hum. $8 is not a lot of money but really don't understand the 1.5 vs 1.6 issue.

All I'm saying is that the G.Skill Ripjaw DDR3 1600 Memory that runs at 7-8-7-24 is rated for 1.6v. Newegg's specification page has it rated at 1.65v, and that is incorrect. If you decide to run it BELOW 1600 MHz, it's rated for 1.5v with higher cas latencies (9-9-9-24). This is coming from the SPD timings on the memory itself.

Now, if you want to run it BELOW 1600 MHz with the faster latencies (7-8-7-24), you can, but it'll take 1.6v.

I don't have a Sandy Bridge processor, but the rule of thumb for Core i5/i7 on the 1156 platform was a maximum of .5v difference between the integrated memory controller (IMC) and DRAM voltage.

The 1.5v vs 1.6v issue is that less power consumption is always better, especially when overclocking. I would recommend spending the extra $5 to get the 1.5v memory.

While I see that you got them to give you a credit (hooray!), the OP was made yesterday (Tuesday) morning.

I meant Monday/Tuesday, got my days mixed. I just noticed the thread a day late.

Thanks, my reading comprehension skills are lacking.

No problem. The confusion is warranted. I think that one of the reasons that G.Skill has nearly as many DDR3 kits for sale as all of its competitors combined is that it repackages the exact same memory at different speeds/timings/voltages. While I have no real proof, I'm guessing the two kits you linked can actually hit identical speeds/timings.

G.Skill sells almost every size of memory in 1066/7, 1333/9, 1333/8, 1333/7, 1600/9, 1600/8, 1600/7, 1866/9, 1866/8, 2000/10, 2000/9, etc. You've got to believe that most of these kits are pretty darn similar, especially when there is huge price overlap between these kits.

I'm very happy with my G.Skill DDR3, but I think they'd do the consumer a favor by just selling one or two higher speed kits and indicating what its tighter SPD settings are. I'm actually considering going back to Corsair next time, because G.Skill has discontinued the kit I bought and says none of its other kits are guaranteed to work with it.
