Hmm, Japanese caps, 7-year warranty, wonder how that compares with the Antec "Edge" Gold-rated 750 PSUs I bought for $90 no-rebate a year or two ago? (That are still sitting shrink-wrapped in my living room. Was thinking of throwing them into an open-air mining rig. But I don't think I could even make ROI on an $85 open-air mining chassis these days.)

Somewhat comparable to that series, but Gold Pro would be a little bit better component/warranty-wise. These are made by Seasonic, and are based on their Focus power supply lineup. The Edge PSUs were also built by Seasonic, and based on their S12-G / G lineup.

Thanks! I'm glad to see new products in Antec's line-up, and a longer warranty. I am a slight Antec fanboy from back in the day. Still got my Delta-made EarthWatts 650W PSU.

Antec power supplies were all I would buy back in the day (that and Zalman CPU coolers). But in the mid 2000's both of those companies were a shell of their former selves, and were passed by their competitors. I don't think Zalman will ever get back to where they were, but I agree that Antec looks like they are finally trying to be a true competitor again. Their biggest problem is trying to keep up with EVGA, Corsair, and Seasonic. Additionally, it doesn't help that Seasonic makes most of Antec's premium PSUs, and people most of the time can buy a better unit for less money directly from Seasonic.

I think Antec got a bit lazy, and forgot a bit about the enthusiast market, because they had their cash cow, retail sales distribution. Antec is the brand sold at Staples, and possibly other office stores. I don't know about BestBuy or Walmart, or if either of those two even still stock Power Supplies regularly on their shelves.

I don't shop at Walmart much, but my local Best Buy still stocks a few power supplies, however I have only seen EVGA, Corsair, and Thermaltake there for a while now. I think that the only reason Antec is still here is the couple of retail outlets that still sell their units (like Staples). Their offerings on sites like Amazon and Newegg have been pretty slim pickings for at least a decade now.

Antec might still do ok in other markets like India though, as I have noticed when users from that region sign up here to ask questions about their Antec PSUs being able to support higher-end video cards because for some reason many of them in that region only come with one 8-pin PCIe connector.

I've been waiting a while for a good deal on a Platinum rated PS. I picked up an EVGA P2 650w 2 years ago for $69.99 AR. I'd love for another one of those to go on sale. I guess the waiting continues.

PSU prices have increased over the last 12 months, or so.

EVGA had a really good sale this past November on their site, and it was the cheapest their units had been in a while:

A unit I own that sometimes goes in the $70 price range after a MIR is the Seasonic Focus Plus Platinum. Comes with a 10 year warranty.

Edit:

EVGA actually just released a new platinum PSU series, but at this point nobody outside of EVGA knows if the new PQ series will replace, or sell alongside the P2. There's still no word on who the OEM is who builds the new series.

Are "Platinum"-rated PSUs really worth the difference in price? I mean, it's what, a few scant percentage-points of efficiency, which, unless your electricity is REALLY expensive, seems like it wouldn't reach ROI for the initial price difference of the supply.

Unless you were mining or doing DC, maybe.

I dunno, I've pretty-much stuck to "Gold" units myself. Primarily because of the price difference. But I do think that "Gold" is worth it over "Bronze".

Sometimes, it might come down to the warranty, sometimes the "Platinum" supplies carry 1 or 2 more years worth of warranty, which may well be worth it.

Typically as efficiency goes up, build quality goes up. I'm the type of person that likes buying high quality stuff. I'm sure a gold rated supply would be just fine, but I don't mind waiting and paying a little bit more to get something a little better.
