Looking at the AsRock combo too. Do I finally retire the x58/i7-920?
No. I regret retiring my x58/950. It was the most stable platform I've owned since the 440BX. Keep in mind none of these new platforms has triple channel, which even at 1333MHz had more bandwidth than anything dual channel.
The performance difference between a 920 and a 4690k is very slight, because the i5's lack hyper threading. The only compelling advantage the new platforms have over x58 1366 is power efficiency and overclocking headroom.
I ran my 950 at 4GHz with a basic closed loop cooler, making it faster than my stock i7-4770K until I overclocked it. Even at 4.2GHz it isn't much faster, maybe 5%. So $400 investment for 5% more performance.
Keep waiting. I still have my Asus P6T / i7-950 and realistically have no reason to get rid of such a competent PC.
