Well I used the Nero Speed test thing and here's the results. Not sure what the yellow line signifies but anyway....

CD that came with the Burner: Start: 22.57, End: 49.47, Avg: 37.65, Time: 2:31
eWorks 48x CD, FAR from President's Day: Start: 22.69, End: 23.92, Avg: 23.88, Time: 3:36
IO Magic 48x CD, FAR from President's Day: Start: 22.75, End: 49.75, Avg: 37.88, TIme: 2:27

So I thought maybe it was a bad CD from the eWorks stack so I tried another one... 23.85 Avg.

So my Expert Analysis is that the eWorks CDs SUCK. Better get my damn rebate or I'm taking them back to OfficeMax.

After returning a Cendyne 48x12x48 (samsung 48x24x48) that wouldn't read, they substituted a Pacific Digital 52x24x52 (BTC drive). That drive wouldn't even spin up so they substituted a Verbatim 52x24x52 which works great and appears to be a rebadged Lite-On.

Can someone give me some information on how to flash the Verbatim with the Lite-On firmware?

I received a partial delivery on this deal and was missing the Hi-Val 100 CD-Rs. I called OM today and asked for status - it's backordered with no estimate for delivery. They also said the rebate had to be postmarked within 14 business days so I cancelled the Hi-Val CD-Rs. OM had applied a pro-rated coupon discount (19.32 of the 25 off $100) so it ended up being a good deal (made $9.33).

For those still waiting - you may want to check status of backordered items.

Well, I had to return the Verbatim because it was loud as hell and I couldn't take it anymore.

The thing was brutal on the CD's too.

So, I took it back and asked for an exchange and got a Cendyne. The drive inside is a 48x24x48 Samsung SW-248F. The only weird thing about this drive is that everywhere I can tell, it is supposed to have an 8mb buffer, but Nero reports it as a 2mb buffer. I burned a few discs with it and they all came out fine.

Here's an interesting issue though. I checked each CD I burned with Scandisk on Nero, and they all give 100% damage on the surface scan. However, when I do the CD-quality check test it reports 0 errors. I tried putting in retail CD's and got errors and damage, but everything reads just fine. It's odd though.

It only shows 2 MB buffer under Nero Info Tool, not 8 MB. I wonder why?

A few others I have, sound like "vacum cleaner"; this one is pleasantly quiet.

I got the 2 MB buffer as well. On the Samsung site, it says this model comes with either an 8 MB buffer (retail package) or a 2 MB buffer (bulk version).

I returned the verbatim (optorite) as well - that thing is a piece of junk.

Ahh, that explains it.

I wonder why I get the massive damaged sectors that I do? Everything reads just fine.

Here's link to a post in another forum showing my results.

To those who received the Pacific Digital Mach52 CD-RW @ $29.99 (w/ a $20 MIR) as a substitution for the Verbatim CD-RW, there's a serious problem w/ the $20MIR. The envelope I submitted that rebate in came back today (unopened) w/ a US Post Office yellow sticker affixed to it. Listed on that sticker was the following:

: POSTAL PLUS
MOVED LEFT NO ADDRESS
UNABLE TO FORWARD
RETURN TO SENDER

My $20MIR was mailed to:
PDC Offer #OFFMAX021630146
16585 Von Karman, #C 605
Irvine, CA 92606

I called my local OM and spoke to an asst. mgr. He told me to bring in (or fax) a copy of the submitted rebate information (i.e. rebate form and returned to sender envelope) so he can send the info to OM Corporate. Supposedly OM corporate will issue me the $20 MIR (but we'll see).

I had the same thing, sent out to Pacific Digital and got the envelope returned to me today stating Moved left No Address, Unable to Forward, Return to Sender! Man I was piping mad! I hate companies that pull this, and this in itself is an actually mail fraud. I don't know if you would want to file claim but if you do its with your USPS. Anyways I called my local OM she gave me corporate, Corporate stated it was an in store special rebate meaning corporate is not responsible for this matter. Don't plan on getting a $20 check from corporate. Anyways I took to my local OM and manager refunded $29.99 cost of drive plus tax. Rerung it for $9.99, I walked away paying a little over $10 : ) I also called Digital Pacific (949)252-1111 at left a message stating I got my envelope returned to me and to please call me with correct address. The OM manager didn't take the envelope or UPC or receipt : ) Im gonna try to get another $20 from Pacific Digital will post results if I do or correct addy when they call back for others with same problem.

Unfortunately only an Assistant Manager was in today. I suspect that if the Store Manager had been in I'd have been able to get the drive refunded and re-rung up @ $9.99. With that said, I'm following the procedure given to me by the Assistant Manager. He's going to e-mail corporate directly about this matter. If I get a $20 check from Corporate, great. If not, I can dispute the $20 via my credit card company. If/when you do get an updated address from PDC, please post that updated address info here.

*EDIT* On this Pacific Digital web-page, they list the following Rebate Address information:

Comp USA, Staples, RadioShack, and OfficeDepot Canada customers please use address on Rebate Coupon.

All Others Please Use Following Address:
Rebate Address
2222 Michelson Dr. Ste #222
Irvine, CA 92612
OfficeMax is not listed among the exclusions, so that may be the correct address.

Ok finally Pacific Digital called me today. I have to send to new addy: 2222 Michelson Dr. Suite 222 Irvine, CA. 92612

They also wanted the original envelope that got returned to me, so if you got your rebate returned to you send them envelope as well.

I'll post when and if I ever get this rebate from Pacific Digital.

This is awesome.
I jumped on this:

combo idea #2 :Logitech Z540 5 piece Speakers $39.99 + 48X CD-RW drive $59.99 = $99.98 - $50 MIR - $25 off $100 Officemax coupon = $25

I know you can't get the $20 rebate for Z540 but I sent it anyway (OfficeMax and officemax.com not "really" the same you know...).
I got confirmation that it was accepted!!!
I guess my final cost will be $5 + tax.
Sweet~~~

**WARNING**

I got a postcard today from good old RebatesHQ *mutter* that my CDRW rebate was invalid because the UPC wasn't the right one. I had to call them to see what was up and the person in India muttered something about the wrong thing was entered so she'll make it valid now.

Summary: I didn't do anything wrong but rebateshq messed up and wasn't going to pay me because of it.

Watch your mail in case anyone else has something "entered wrong"
