Nero tells me the same thing? Maybe Samsung put a 2MB buffer in these rebadged Cendynes? Anyone have any more details on this matter? Also, does anyone know if this drive has the anti-vibration mechanism that Samsung drives have?

I ordered the Verbatim and cdr's online Sunday. They are supposed to be delivered today. I was wondering...just how many different drives can be in the "Verbatim" box? Is it 48x12x48 or 48x12x50 or ???

I suppose for them paying me $15, I should not care, but with all the comments I am confused as to just what can be in the Verbatim box. After all, CloneCD, Nero, and BackUPMYPC do not show Verbatim at all.

TIA

Got the Verbatim burner and the E-Works CD-Rs today. Outside box has "features burn protection technology and vibration reduction system". The burner model # is 4816P (inside label) which I'm guessing is an A-Open Drive? Outside part # is VBT481248A. Can anyone confirm?

Edit: Did some more research and it's the BenQ model. Is this an OK drive? Seen some bad reviews citing media incompatibility.

BenQ 4816P CD-RW

I'm replacing a 32X burner (86 cents) from another MysticMan1 deal which vibrates a ton.

Came with full version of Nero 5.5.8.2 (cool).

The other CD-Rs are on back order. Thanks again MysticMan1!

I got the 2 MB buffer as well. On the Samsung site, it says this model comes with either an 8 MB buffer (retail package) or a 2 MB buffer (bulk version).

My question exactly.
Not that it matters to me much since I already have a Plextor.
This is merely a cdrom for me

Last year during the Black Friday sales, I picked up an I/O Magic 48x16x48x drive. It too turned out to be a BENQ (probably the same model as the one you listed). My previous burner was a QPS 24x CD-RW Drive. The Benq drive initially failed burning on 16x rated NAME BRAND MEDIA (Fujifilm CD-R's) at faster than 12x. I then upgraded the BIOS of the drive to the latest available. It claimed it could burn as fast as 24x on that very same media; however, after burning several CD's at that speed, none of them were actually usable. My old QPS burner worked flawlessly on that same 16x media (burning at 24x). Anyway, after I made about 10 coasters of my name brand Fujifilm media, I returned the Benq burner. My advice: GET RID OF IT!

P.S. Benq's are very picky about media. They supposedly do work well w/ some media; however, personally, I'd rather have a CD-RW that works properly with ALL CD-RW media. BTW, I've since purchased a Sony 48x24x48x (re-badged Lite-ON -- think it was also a MynsticMan1 deal) which I upgraded to the LiteOn 52x24x52x BIOS. The Sony/LiteOn has worked flawlessly too.

Total plus tax: $69.35
Rebates: $30 + $20 + $25 = +$5.65

I'm assuming I get those rebates as specified, and if so, how did I come out ahead?? I thought you had to the $100/$25 off deal to come out ahead.

Is my math/thinking right?
hmm, if that's really what your total was, then you must have gotten something for less.
theoretically, you shoulda paid $60 for the burner and $25 for the cd's. $85 plus tax
then, the burner has $30 and $20 mir. the cd's have $17 and $8 mir(something like that).

so, you got a hot deal! that would be nice if that happens for me too.

Got my OfficeMax order today via UPS. They forgot to include the CDRW in my order though, I had to call up and get a new one shipped to me

Oh well, the rest of my Staples order comes tomorrow too, so no big loss.

Well, I thought I had a great deal fall in my lap when the manager at OfficeMax subbed an I/O Magic 48x16x48 CDRW for the OOS Verbatin and gave it to me for $29.99 out the door plus a $20 rebate. It's model#BCE4816IM which is a BTC model number, but this drive is also the same as a Benq drive and an MSI drive.

Well, this drive is crap. It freezes at 5% in Nero without ever writing a track, and is VERY PICKY about which media it will even recognize. Furthermore, it doesn't even seem capable of buring anywhere near 48x...that s asumng it will burn anything at all. Check out this link of the CDSpeed test I ran:

CDSpeed Link

Does anyone have any experiences with this drive doing something right? Please let me know how you managed ot get it to work.

I just checked the officemax website and they don't show the 48x verbatim drive anymore. Can anyone else confirm this? I rather order online with the z540 than do a a online coupon usage at b&m, anyways i don't have time to go the b&m store.

After making a few coasters, I decided to upgrade the firmware. The Verbatim/BenQ 48x16x48 shipped with firmware version A.WZ; the most recent one on their website is A.YZ. Burning seems a little bit smoother, but it still doesn't like generic media. However, it seems to work well with branded media (I've tried are Imation and Fuji TY's). But, during Nero's "verify written data", the read speed decreases a few times.

Funny, since the Norcent 40x12x that I picked up at Fry's on Black Friday works with all types of media, and has performed flawlessly.

Can't complain too much, as both were free after rebate...

OK, I got my 2x 100 CDr's and a Verbatim 48x12x48 box but there was a 48x24x48 burner inside with Nero express (Nero lite?), I havn't checked the serial number on it to see what it really is but I will assume it's a BenQ for now.
The first thing I did was try out CloneCD and it worked without a hitch then I tried Nero 5.x.x that I already had installed on my PC and it saw the drive as an "image burner" (or something) and anything I want to burn with it only gets created into an image file on my HD, but if I go through the same process with my old Asus 16x it works just fine.

Anyone have any clue on this?

Same here. Just opened my box, got it yesterday. Box ways 48x12x48, front of the CDRW drive says 48x24x48. Model 4824P. Serial number is huge so I'll compare that later.

Guess it's time to pop it in and see what happens.

Burned a bunch late last night. The first one out of the stack was a coaster. All the others are fine. (Reported "OK" by Nero, but I have not tried to read any as yet.)

IMHO, we both got lucky! The one in my box turned out to be the Samsung 48x24x48.
Thanks to conwaymac, I was already armed with this info.
Thanks to Mysticman1, I had my trusty creditcard and knew where to go.

Are the 52x Pacific Digital's all BTC drives? Or are some of them also Lite-On's?

I'm afraid lsman is correct (i.e. that the Pacific Digital Mach52 is a BTC drive, not a Lite-On) thus making my previous assumption incorrect (i.e. that the Pacific Digital 52x burner I received is 99% likely a Lite-On).

I haven't opened up the box of my Pacific Digital Mach52 yet (which may be the only sure-fire way for me to confirm this); however, I was making my assumption based on the shape and position of the visible eject button on the front cover of the drive's box. To the best of my knowledge, Lite-On CD-RW's tend to have a single eject button (w/ rounded sides) located on the right-hand side of the drive's faceplate. The image on the front of the Pacific Digital Mach52 drive has such a button in the same spot; however, the image also has the drive door open (w/ a CD sitting in it) thus blocking the view of the rest of the faceplate.

Click here to see the BTC 52x24x52 drive (notice that there are 2 buttons to the right, not 1)
Click here to see the Pacific Digital Mach52 drive (rather useless image)
Click here to see the Pacific Digital Mach48 drive (see right-hand side of the page)

The Mach48, like the BTC drives, has 2 buttons to the right. If you assume that the Pacific Digital Mach48 & Mach52 drives have the same faceplate (and same buttons), then the Pacific Digital drives are indeed BTC's, not Lite-On's.

at least the Mach48 has its own $20 MIR (copy that hand out from store), do not need to worry about the replacement MIR thing. (and less money out initially, less Tax etc )
