Thanks to some astute observer in this thread, I just checked the report on the Samsung 48x24x48 and it is not the 8MB buffer, instead, it is the 2MG buffer according to Nero tools.

Where do I complain, I thought I was getting 24ct. gold and it only turned out to be 23ct.!:disgust:

I think you should stop buying CDRW drives *grin*

keep the cheepest, there is not that big of a performance differencse with different drive (IMHO, i know im going to get grief about this) If its works, dont fix it, dont replace it. 1 less min. in burning for a new drive, is not worth the money, or effort. Also, is that extra min going to kell you? No.

Good luck which ever way you go.

BenQ works fine in my computer, NOW; I got one about 3 months ago.

It works better if set as master drive, BenQ's tech told me so. Hopefully it works for you.

Just to see if anyone else got the same reply from OM.

I called and asked about the OM rebates...not mfg. The person said that I should send in 1 form for the drive and 1 100 pack of cdr's. Then in another envelope, send in the request for the second 100 pack. She said that was the best way as there was only 1 line on the form (#37) for both cdr's.

Also, Copies of the receipt/UPC are OK for OM.

I just received mine today. Ordered a Verbatim plus 2 100pk CDRs from the website sunday. The website said to expect delivery the 25th, and still says the items have not shipped.

The only problem was the box literally looked like it had been run over by a truck, well maybe not a truck, perhaps a go-cart or snowmobile. The box was caved in and held together mostly with tape. I opened it up and found both CDR spindal cases were cracked a broken, one being held together only by the shrinkwrap. The Verbatim's box (model 4816p, I believe) was slightly crushed on one side.

The drive appeared fine, but I wasn't taking my chances. I just returned from my "local" OM where I exchanged everything. They gave me a Cendyne (Model SW248) and a new recepit for the rebates. I have to say they were really great at the store, I didn't have any problems with my web coupon or getting a new receipt.

Just got my verbatium drive from officemax.

Windows xp detected it as a cendyne 481648

Is this a good thing? Who makes this drive? tdk? liteon?
I'm a bit out of date on burners

Also how do you guys send in your rebates. This drive has two rebates but only one upc.
Both ask for original upc.

First of all, this drive isn't a 48x16x48 its a 48x12x48. And its not even that.

Nero speed tester can't even test the burner beyon 40x.

While attempting to burn 48x which I can't because nero doesn't give me that option but rather 40x.
It won't burn at 40x, gave me a bad burn.

Gay.

I call officemax, they said i can ship this to them, send in my rebates and wait till they get me a new drive. I guess i'm going to wait. Oh well, i'm making 10 bucks from it.

System i have:
Sn41g2
amd 2100xp
512mb
onboard sound, video
30 gig wd hard drive

good luck with yours, hope you don't have the same problem as mine.

Try upgrading Nero to the latest version. Nero's website

I posted earlier that my 48x16x48 didn't like generic media. It seems to work decent with branded media (tested Imation and Fuji TY's so far). A firmware upgrade also seemed to help out a bit.

well, you do know that when burning at high speed, it actually skips right?
even though i have a fast cdrw, i never burn faster than 12x for cdr and 4x for cdrw.

Installed the Verbatim (Benq 4816P) drive and ran Sandra. Results:

Benchmark Breakdown
Drive Technology : 27x CD speed
Track Speed : 14307 RPM (estimated)
Buffered Read : 2633 kB/s
Sequential Read : 5 MB/s
Random Read : 1254 kB/s
Average Access Time : 150 ms (full stroke, estimated)

This is much better than the A open 32x drive it replaced. Less noise also.

BTW the deal is NOT dead. OM in Beavercreek OH is still substituting Cendynes for the Verbatim drive as of this evening.

Well, I just got mine. It is the BenQ 4816P. I have looked on the web and some say with the latest Firmware and latest Nero that it is an OK drive. I have a Lite-on 24x and NEC 24x so this is for another system.

One question...is there buffer underrun protection or not? Still, not bad as they paid me $15.01!

...HEY, I got a GREAT deal! Now I need the media

The back of my Verbatim box says it is a 84x12x48 Recorder. Man...can't wait for the 84X media! Can someone let me know when they find some, "free after Rebate", of course?

I got the 4816P also.

The thing doesn't have Mount Rainer support or C2 error support.

Tis going to be sold on ebay I say.

I bought the Buslink 52x24x52 from Staples deal and got a crappy Ricoh drive. That thing was like a Jet liner in my room AND it would not spin up past 24x no matter the media. Lame!

Oh well, I tried. Guess I'll stick with my lite-on 40x12x48

Has anyone else that got the 48x24x48 in the 48x12x48 box been able to identify it? I went out to the BenQ site and they don't even show that they make a 24x rewrite drive?

I will test mine with Nero tools and Sandra tonight unless someone is sure they have the scoop (but I'll do it anyway )

BTW, Nero was reporting the burn speed to be 7200, what does that translate to?

EDIT: I just found a link in a previous post that has firmware for the 48x24x48 drive at the BenQ site, it looks like they only sell them rebagers.

Well, I feel that if it works, I will keep it as is. They paid me $15.01 so as long as buffer protection works I will be OK with it.

I have the BenQ drive too. But for the life of me, i can't flash the firmware!
Its A.UZ right now. I ran the firmupgrade to A.YZ by pessing the "upgrade now" button. after 30 seconds, it would say its done. I would reboot it. But its still at A.UZ
I tried it like 6 times. same result.
I am using WinXP.

Anyone got it working, please let me know!

I will try it tonight but I am sure at least one other person said he did it Ok and it did make a BIG difference.

I hope there is no trick to doing this...I run XP also.

The benq packed by Verbatim can not be upgraded with the benq firmware utility. The Benq packaged by Cendyne can be upgraded with the benq utililty. Seems the Verbatim modified the firmware and Cendyne did not.
