I talked to a very helpful CSR named Michael today, and ask soon as I called he asked for name and order number. I tell him, he pauses, and there is like "Let me guess, you are looking for your FSS Number." I told him yeah, and he laughed that he was right. Turns out that he "doesn't know" the FSS number for the university because Dell has horrible record keeping and screwed some stuff up. He ended up telling me that if you attend a university and can't seem to find your university's FSS number, to just reply with a scanned copy of your student ID and that would be good enough. I managed to find my FSS# on Indiana University's website with a link to Dell's site.

The most helpful thing in dealing with getting your rebates back is to treat the CSR's really well, and carry on conversation with them (though we are geeks, can't expect too much). After you're done talking, tell them they have been extremely helpful, you apprecaite their time, and after you're done ask if you can talk to a feedback representative. Next time you call in, ask for the person that you talked to, they'll be a lot more willing to help you out.

One more helpful detail, if you want to call to get your FSS member ID, don't call costumer service, instead call the sales department. They have the numbers.

Anyone still have only 2 rebates showing at rebatestatus.com? I resubmitted 3 of my rebates a week ago and still no luck with the other 3 =(. What should we do?

I have 4 and I have sent the missing one twice. If it doesn't show up this week I am going to call.

All 5 of mine finally showed up. Wonder how long it takes from being in the system to getting a check.

All 5 have shown up.

Sent copies of the student ID with rebates, but got the Dell verification email anyway. I lucked out, since my school DOES have a FSS#, something that I did not know when I placed the order.

I have also been credited with the shipping difference over FEDEX ground. I started the process by inquiring by email (no answer), but then getting a customer satisfaction survey email to which I responded. A few more exchanges and I was authorized a $35 credit, which showed on my credit card bill.

So far, so good, but not something for the faint of heart.

Not that I won't fight to the death to receive all my rebates, but I bought in on the Compaq $150 monitor rebate after getting my Dell, and I already received that rebate; whereas only 3 of my 5 show up in their system after submitting twice!

I think it is time to call Dell directly and complain!

I sent mine in on 11/30. That makes today week 7 since they received the rebates, inside the 6-8 week estimate printed on the rebate form. After 1 more week, it will be time for me to complain. If you didn't send in your rebates that early, you have a longer wait until they care about your complaint.

I called up the rebatestatus.com service center today (1-877-776-6910) to inquire why only 2 out of my 5 rebates have shown up thus far even though I mailed in my rebates a while ago and faxed in the information at the beginning of last week (per their request). The girl I spoke with (can't remember her name) told me that Dell has taken over processing these rebates and that all inquiries are to be directed to Dell Customer Service @ 1-800-695-8133.

I never got one of those Dell e-mails others have received (requesting proof of eligibility); however, none of my rebates had even shown up on-line by then. I'm not going to call Dell at this time as I don't want to rock the boat. Once 8 weeks have passed, perhaps then I'll call.

This has been an FYI.

And what if Dell did send you an email and you never got it? I've already seen at least one person who didn't and when they inquired about their rebates Dell indicated they should have gotten the email and should follow the instructions therein. I dunno about you but if I were in your position I'd be covering myself because you just know Dell will try and claim that you lose because you didn't respond to their request. Good luck trying to convince them you never got it.

Just because someone at Dell said they have sent the email doesn't necessarily mean the email was sent. That particular Rep would know only if he was the one that sent it.

Oh yeah, I sent them proof that my school participates in the FSS, and 2 days later they send an email saying :

Dear Valued Customer:

The following email was sent to you in error. Please ignore this communication as this does not apply to you. Member's of Dell's Employee Purchase Program or Dell's Faculty, Student and Staff program are eligible to apply for all valid rebate promotions from Nov 20 - Nov 26, 2002. Please expect a 2-3 weeks response time for the mailing of rebate checks/credits for your valid rebate submissions. Normal rebate processing time is 8-10 weeks from the time you apply for rebates.

Please do not respond to this message as this is coming from an unmonitored email account.

Thank you for your interest in our programs and products,
Dell Employee Purchase Program

First: If your FSS status is legit, their Jan. 29th, 2003 deadline is meaningless. Say you call up after 8 weeks inquiring the status of your rebates only to find out they haven't sent them because they couldn't confirm your eligibility. Submit the required proof at that time and your rebates should be on their merry way.

Second: If you paid by VISA/MC/AMEX, there's a buyer protection DISPUTE PROCESS you can use. (I don't know what, if any, dispute recourse you have via Dell's financing). I contacted my credit card company and was told two things: 1) You can dispute a charge as old as 60 days. 2) When I explained my situation a bit further, the CSR said that for such a situation, I could have longer than the standard 60 dispute period (although no actual maximum timeframe was given to me).

Third: If Dell did indeed e-mail me (which I'm sure they didn't, after all, my 2 of rebates listed on-line only showed up on line 3 days ago -- well after the wave of e-mails were sent), given that we had to US MAIL our REBATE FORMS, Dell should have (in addition to the e-mail) US MAILED those "verification of eligibility" letters as well.

For the reasons listed above, I'm not too concerned about the Jan. 29th, 2003 "deadline."

As far as disputing the charges with your CC company, my understanding is that since Dell offered to take the merchandise back and offer a full refund, most CC companies will consider that an acceptable resolution and will not honor the dispute.

But had you read the message thread correctly, Dell never sent me any verification e-mail. Thus, I have no knowledge at this time whether my rebates are being questioned. If they are, they haven't informed me that I have an option to return my system.

So, now they have agreed to 4 of the 5 rebates, but are disputing the fifth. Rebatestatus says they are going to send me a postcard telling me what was wrong. BAH!

Part way there, I guess, but what a hassle.

Other 4 are still being processed.

There is nothing wrong with my order no. or customer no. - I sent them the packing slip.

Has anybody called to see what this new Dell fiasco is about?

Does anyone recall having problems checking their order when it was processed a couple months ago. I remember getting invalid account and order number checking at Dell's site for my order status; you couldn't just check the order status at Dell Home. The only way I checked my order status was to go to Dell Education > Student Purchase Program > EPP Site and then checking order status there. I wonder if this is the cause of the problem; the order/ account numbers were some how invalid or corrupted in Dell's computers. Who knows? My 5th rebate for $200 still hasn't shown up.
