deal discussed a bit in the a31 thread - i agree, good deal on a good machine. i'm jumping in, but the website is slow. i wanted to wait and think more, but can't do that when it gets posted on tech--bargains

Anyway, I just called in to order because their website's registration was really messed up. I think I'm going to miss out on the 2% from ebates though I didn't want to see them go out of stock on me since I've been laptop shopping for a few months now. This is one of the most-discounted and highest quality machines to cross through on a laptop deal over the past few months, IMHO.

Now, does anyone know of a compaq rebate that we can add to this?

The compaq business center has a few deals for free port replicators or multiport wireless when you buy through them. The web site is pretty poor for finding that out, though.

Maybe the key would have been to buy through compaq then BVG to microwarehouse. Is that possible?

Just can't wait for my 2-day airborne shipment to arrive...

i've been thinking about maybe buying this, but the no firewire or usb 2.0 is a turnoff- is there a pcmcia card out there that supports BOTH firewire and usb 2.0? only ones i've seen are either or, but i've seen PCI cards (of course) that support both at once.

anyone have one of these and have comments about it?

edit: i decided against it because i noticed it's a single-spindle design, which means if i wanted to have 2 batteries in it at the same time i'd have to pull out the dvd drive and put the 2nd battery in there. i can put up with something with a little more weight for something that can hold 2 batteries at once...

I don't think any pc-cards out there do both at once. It would be nice if one of the dual enclosures would also act as a hub for both...

I figure that if I'm using one of those things I'll need to be at a desk anyway, so the card isn't that big a deal.

Would be nice to have a port replicator with usb2 and firewire, though....When the Banias laptops come out, I'll start looking again - hopefully this system should hold its value close to the purchase price for a bit...

i actually chanced on this deal a few days ago and bought one.

what really sold it for me was its size and weight 1.2inch thick and 4.8 pounds(I think it might be heavier with the battery though i am not sure). it sports a radeon 7500 32meg and dvd cdrw combo. The 1.2 p3 is a tualatin with 512 cache so it is actually comparable to a mobile p4 1.5. Not to mention that the N600c has an excellent battery life and it comes with both XP pro and win2k installed. This model has a normal xga which is fine I guess on a 14.1 inch screen. What it needs is more ram. 256 ain't enough baby. But can't complain though for only $999. Its dirt cheap. No usb2 and firewire is a big minus. But hey for people like me who can't afford anything that actually uses usb2 and firewire (I can only afford to buy a usb mouse now) it ain't so bad. Once I make enough $$ I will get a laptop that has everything.

Hey dun forget that this lappy comes with 3 years of warranty.

DTBH - Hrm, only a normal XGA? That sucks. The description is pretty clear that it's a 1400x1050 SXGA+ screen. I'm really psyched to get this machine and I do not want to have to return it because the description is wrong. I really want those extra pixels ;-)

Display Type:
14.1" TFT active matrix - integrated
Max Resolution:
1400 x 1050 / 24-bit (16.7M colors)

Still, it's got a good price - cheap enough to add WiFi (even through the proprietary compaq screen hub), more RAM (only uses 1 slot originally) and a bigger hard drive over time...I figure a little less than $200 could get you an enclosure, firewire/usb2 card (either/or, not both) and a big HD.

This is an amazing deal. My current notebook just bit the dust. never did work the same after some idiot fed it a Jack and Coke in Montreal. My brother's IBM Thinkpad T23 has a 14.1" TFT SXGA+ screen and the 1400 x 1050 is a great resolution for the screen. Crystal clear. Yes it IS coupled with a Radeon Mobility 7500 with 32MB of dedicated DDR which whoops the ATI IGP320 based notebooks which used shared system memory. Most tests seem to indicate a 3DMark score of 3500 - 4000 and 1024 x 768 Q3 benchmarks at around 65 - 80FPS.

Don't forget to use EBates with gives you a 2% discount. So it basically pays for 2 day shipping.

I guess this is pretty hot espically considering the battery life you can probably get outta this sucker and the fact that it has a 32mb graphics card which is basically unheard of for under a grand.

This is smoking! I recently bought this same model off eBay for $1200 shipped. I can't believe they have it for this price!

NOTE, the graphics card is NOT a Radeon 7500. It's the previous version of the Mobility Radeon.

For your info, this model (470026-699) has an SXGA+ screen, and it's beautiful! Battery life is four hours for me: outstanding! 256MB RAM has also proven sufficient thus far. I do lots of Photoshop, and I've been pleasantly suprised with the performance. Three year international warranty from Compaq is great, too. Support for business products is top notch (unlike consumer line support). My keyboard needed to be replaced on my n600c due to a defective space bar. I was on hold with Compaq for about 2 minutes, then after 5 minutes speaking with a CSR, my keyboard was on the way. It arrived the next day.

You guys better jump on this fast. I think this is an error (or I dunno WTH they are thinking). They are selling other models (including lower end ones) for $2250. It doesn't make sense.

Any other questions about the laptop, feel free to post them, and I'd be happy to answer them. If you are serious about weight/size, but still want a very powerful laptop, this is your best choice for the money. Unless you need firewire and/or USB 2.0... I've done all the research.

So, how is that 14" SXGA+ screen for word processing and web browsing? I've only seen 15" SXGA+ screens, and things looked pretty small.

If you think 15" SXGA+ is small, then you'll think 14" SXGA+ is small. That's kind of common sense right there. 15" SXGA+ is comparable to 1280x1024 on a 19" CRT. 14" SXGA+ is a little smaller than that. I don't mind it.

This is an incredible deal. I have been looking for the right deal on a laptop for well over a year and this is the one. I ordered mine on Wed. late night and now I am kicking my self for not having paid the extra $10 to have it delivered today, I paid for express 2 day and the tracking still shows it is in Ohio.

I did a lot of research before buying this and I thought I would share some of the info I found. Some of this has already been posted but I will put it here are well.

Compaq Reference Material

I found this last site very useful as it contains many relevant documents on this laptop including: maintenance & service guide, hardware guide, software overview, expansion reference guide, etc. It also is the place to get driver updates, etc. I saw someone on eBay selling these guides and I belive that they all come from here.

I am wondering if anyone has any experience with the firewire enclosures that allow you to put your own drive in it. I plan to do some video editing with it and would love to stick one of the 120 or 200 GB WD SE drives into a firewire case to use. I think I would like one for a 3.5" drive. It seems there is some question about whether those cases can utilize the speed of ATA100 drives. Are they limited to ATA33? Anyone who has experience with these please post for the rest of us.

I have never had a laptop before but I understand that this one can have 2 PCMCIA type 2 cards in it. That means we could put both a USB 2.0 and Firewire expansion cards in, right? Does anyone know of a card that can do both these (I think there is a PCI version of one)?

I am anxious to hear more from people as they get their laptops and try them out.

I have one of these from work and I can honestly say that for anything other than games this is wonderful laptop. It is very thin for a laptop with a drive bay and has a sleek rectangular business look. However it is a bit heavy but it does everything you ask of it.
