This deal seems a lot less hot now that I've received a DOA Evo from Microwarehouse today. They say they won't take it back; it's Compaq's problem and that I should ship it to them for a repair. Compaq says it's Microwarehouse's problem. Beware that Microwarehouse claims they NEVER take back defective equipment and that it's up to the manufacturer to make good on the equipment. This really isn't worth the hassle. Think twice before ordering this or any other big ticket item from Microwarehouse.

Ouch, sorry to hear that. That solved my problem - being debating about it ever since this was posted.

yeah, that's kind of disturbing. i placed an order for an A31 thinkpad from the other thread. haven't received it yet, but I called the order in and spoke to a sales rep. during our conversation i specifically asked what their policy is on laptops arriving damaged or non-working, and he said that they would send out a return shipping box free of charge and exchange it for a working one. now i'm wondering if he was just full of it? I'll see what happens when I get it. if i run into trouble, maybe i can get Amex to help broker the exchange/return.

Was it factory sealed when you got it?

If so, you still have a 3 year warranty on it. Compaq has been known to ship out brand new units if you get a factory sealed notebook that doesn't work. Our company exclusivly uses Compaq and we had one machine come in DOA factory sealed. I called and complained, and 2 days later I had an even more powerful factory sealed notebook at no extra cost.

Got mine the other day and it's great. Thin, light, great screen, great keyboard, solid build and fast. It is weighted a bit awkardly (the cd-rw/dvd weighs a ton and unbalances the laptop), however with the weight saver in (included), the thing is a feather.

Can't wait to get the multiport wifi module...

For those that received the laptop - is it the fan and hard drive quiet and also how is the screen?

I just bought one but now I'm wondering if I made a mistake. PC Mall has the following deal:

Compaq Evo N1000V Pentium 4 2.0GHz
256MB DDR SDRAM
20GB SMART hard drive
DVD-ROM drive
56K Modem + NIC
14.1" TFT SXGA
Microsoft Windows XP Pro
Price $1099

This a bit heavier but is a P4 2GHz for only $100 more.

and yet, you lose 10 gb, the cdrw, and gain a few pounds...so it's a considerable tradeoff...

Same tradeoffs - portability vs desktop replacement.

I'm happy with mine, but I wanted a machine with that physical profile. Performance-wise, it will run what I want and play a decent game of Civ3 or whatever strategy game I might want to play over the next year or two...Then again, I play games once every few months, so that's not a good measure.

After working on a 15" Gateway this weekend I think the smaller screen would be better for me. Ordered one an hour ago. Excited to get it - although I never thought I would ever purchase a Compaq computer. Good reviews from the anandtech posters conviced me. Thanks.

On the DOA Evo I received from Microwarehouse, they finally did agree to send me a replacement. According to Airborne Express, I should have it today. I don't understand why the first couple of people I talked with there were so unhelpful. By the way, the tech support people I talked to at Compaq claimed they *never* send replacements for DOA computers, but that I could send a unit back to them for a repair. As with most businesses, I guess it all depends on who you talk with. The three live Evo's I received are really nice.

Don't worry, you made a good choice. Most people place too much emphasis on the CPU power. There isn't that much of a difference in doing everyday stuff. Here's a list of things that make this laptop a good choice:

thin and light - really good for traveling
1400 x 1050 resolution - you only get this on the highest end laptops
dvd/cdrw combo drive - they'll come in handy
3 year warranty - worth at least $100
4 hour battery life - very rare in any laptop
30 gb hard drive
plus you're getting high quality stuff because this was their high end stuff made for business professionals.

I got one and the driver said it's a Radeon M6 (LY) chip,
350Mhz, 32mb ddr sdram. native 1400x1050 SXGA+ display.

However, if anyone else who has this laptop can comment,
does your n600c make a noticable hissing sound from your
laptop speakers? My does, even in the BIOS setup screen
(so can't be any os driver issue). I turned down my volume to
zero and I still hear the hissing (in a semi-quiet room).

I think is more like Radeon 7200.

Anybody try playing 3D games with it yet? No high speed Firewire or USB2? Is buildin wireless an option?

I don't know much about lappys.....will this USB 2.0 card work in this laptop? USB 2.0 PCMCIA . Since this is from Staples you can drop a coupon on it!! Also, how many card slots (empty) are available?

Can anyone tell me how to disable the touchpad on the lappy? There's no option under the mouse section of the control panel that will let me disable it.

When the PC first boot up go into the BIOS/ROM screen F10 key and look under one of the menu options and you can disable either the touchpad or the trackball.
