But this is a great deal even though its only 720. Only thing is my room is not to wide. I think maybe only 14' across. Maybe a bit less ill have to measure it again. My couch would go up against the wall btw.

I sit 13 feet away from my 100" screen. At first it was noticeable to see the screen door effect (really seen on a sd PJ, this is a HD PJ so much less seeable, yes I made that up and it is copywritten), but after a weeks time I dont see it at all unless I really look for it and I really have to look for it, my eyes have adjusted so much I dont see it. If you sit 15" or further you wont see it at all even if you tried. The only benefit you get between a HD pj VS a SD pj is you can sit closer. Other then that at say 20 feet you wont be able to tell which is running hd and which is not for they will have the identical looking picture at that distance, just when you sit closer will you see a difference.

As trey says it will be 2x the size and half the price of the 42" one your looking at, and the Mitsu may be better, I wouldnt know, but the HD70 is $100 less and comes with the free screen, free up grade 2 year warranty, the free bulb warranty, and free shipping, the mitsu as far as I can find anywhere does not. Its a trade off getting what can be well over $800 in free stuff (2 bulbs if they blow in 2 years, free screen, free warranty, free shipping, less price), or slightly brighter picture. For me the call is easy

Oh and Gi0rgi0, you can have it 10 feet from the wall you are throwing the image and get a 80 inch screen. So that is a little big more daunting than the 42" LCD and for consoles it is definately more fun!

So you have the Optoma too? I assume so since you are making comparisions. Why is it 'better'?

Wow this is tempting - this would be my first foray into projectors, would you guys see a huge difference in the HD70 vs the H31?

Depends on your source. You will not see a huge different with SD DVDs, but if you have a high def source (HD channels, or Blu-ray or HD-DVD player) you will see a big difference.

720p is the value spot now. With very nice 720p projectors under $1000, it makes no sense to get less. With 1080p still $4000 and up, the value isn't there yet (for most of us).

Woot.com has this for sale today for $789 + $5 shipping. The model on Woot is the HD32 but according to the thread it is the same as the HD70 (rebranded as HD32 for Costco).

Last question - with a 7800gt I'd have to get a dvi to HDMI cable to output on the projector correct?

Yes I have had both projectors, I have since sent the optoma back.

The HD70 has a much more prominient SDE (Screen door effect). It still is not noticible at 1.7x the screen size, and many people could not detect it at 1.5.

The Mitsubishi HD1000u throws a better picture to me. Yes I said it, I prefer the pixel fill of the Mits to the Optoma. With the mitsubishi, it is brighter, has more "POP" to it without jacking up the contrast and crushing the colors, and you can sit closer without seeing any screen door references.

I got my mitsubishi for 850 out the door from projectorpeople, however, it did not come with a free screen (wouldn't have used it) or the extra lamp warranty. So the advantages of those 2 pieces do make this a very good deal. I though have a slightly larger screen, a better picture (imo), and can afford to replace the bulb when it goes out. However I don't think I will get there as my projector will be replaced by a nice 1080 oe 1440p model when they become more reasonable.

Oh, and with a 7800GT you could use the VGA output rather than getting a DVI to HDMI cable.

I have tried the vga output from my 1900 AIW and it sucks ass VS the dvi, I dont know if that would be the same for the Nvidia card. For my card, however, when I used the VGA cable it was blurry and out of focus, I tried every setting under the sun for the card and projector, and even the newest driver for the card with no help at all. All other sources with the same cable, xbox, ps2, work great and I was hoping for the same and not have to buy a 30' DVI cable when I moved my set up around but no matter what I did I couldnt get the picture right and it annoyed the piss out of me because I know how clear it was before I moved it running it all off the shorter DVI cable. I have since bought a 30' dvi cable and it looks stunning again. And not only did I try different drivers and setting but different cables, it looked great when I first plugged it in, I went into setting, the screen went black, came back on and was fugged up from that point on.

So again I cant say the nvidia will give the same problem but my ATI card was giving me all kinds of hell. I would say try it and if it fails go for the dvi to hdmi adapter, if you already have a cable, or buy a cable with one end hdmi, the other dvi, can be had at a good price at monocable.com

I have the HD70 and it rocks.

picked it up at Bestbuy when they had it for $999 + $100 gift card. I also picked up the extended warranty that covers one bulb replacement.

Sorry to bump such an old thread - does anyone have the specific company/model number of the free screen you get? I haven't opened mine and I'd like to sell it but I don't see any particular model number anywhere on the box. I've asked around in the AVS forums and things like that but no response.
