PROBLEM

Anybody have some ideas . . .

My drive acts like it's burning fine, but at about the 98% mark, when it looks like it's starting to finish, the program craps out and says the writing failed. This has happened at 16x and 12x using 16x media. The results were the same with Nero as with CDRWin. Both programs are the very latest non-beta versions. Also, when I look at the disk, even though the programs were indicating that 98% was done, there's only about a 1/5 inch ring burned when I pull the disk out. Yes, burn-proof is on and the buffers stay full anyway (untilk they empty near the end). During the burn, the light stays a solid red. Should there be flashing or anything to indicate that data is being read or when Safe-Burn kicks in?

I replaced my 12x Plextor with this drive, on which I burned a disk using the absolute identical system setup just a few hours ago. I've only had Plextors and thought I'd save a few bucks by trying the Liteon, please don't tell me I've made a mistake.

Also, the drive isn't able to read my SVCD that my DVD has no problem with AND that I played on my Plextor just hours ago. I'm getting really upset now with this POS Liteon. I should have kept my Aopen that I originally got . . .

Specs:

Drive - Liteon 24102B
Drive Firmware - 5S0D
OS - XP Pro
MB - K7S5A with 1.4Ghz Athlon (no OC)
Interface - Slave on IDE2

Ok here is an easy way to do this, now that I have sucessfully done it.

1) Go to a coupon site that has a link to the $20 off $75 OD coupon, click it. Generally when you click the link it takes you to a page that says your referal code was accepted. Note: most of these code accepted messages also include a tech depot excluded warning (meaning the coupon won't work for electronics

2) Then browse and add the Pacific Digital drive to your cart. In my case it came up out of stock, and asked me if I wanted to back order it, which I said yes, but somehow a quantity of 0 appear in my cart.

3) View your cart. While it shows the pacific digital drive, and the price for the drive, a quantity of 0 ordered and then the applied coupon of $20 off.

4) Print this view of your cart and take it to your OD, if they have the drive go to the help desk and explain... "I wanted to order this online, because I have a coupon, but it is out of stock online, yet you have it in your store. Would you be able to honor the coupon?"

In my case the manager was the person at the desk (at the 2nd store I went to, the 1st store I didn't have the cart view printed), she asked what the value of the coupon was and looked at the print out. Then she sent someone to get my drive.

Final cost with tax was about $85, less rebate ~$55 in the end.

Ok 2 questions:
1) The register printed a $20 rebate, and I downloaded the $30 rebate from the links provided here. Anybody know if there is a way to get both?

2) Should I replace my plextor 12x10x32 with this drive, or keep the plextor? Is there anything that the plextor can do that this can't?

I note that the Diamond Cut audio cleanup software is supposed to
be bundled with this drive. Is it a demo version, or the real thing?
If full version that doesn't expire, I'm more inclined to jump on this
one, as the software lists for $99. Thanks for any information!

Gooberedup, before you go and return it or something, just try updating the CDRWs firmware to the latest available. I think it's something liek 5S54. Hmmm, the LiteOn site isn't responding at the moment, but it used to be here:
http://www.liteonit.com/webfw/LTR-24102B/USER/R245S54.zip
and the instructions were here:
http://www.liteonit.com/english-load-how.htm

Edit: Now I'm unsure if that's the right address or not. I had it saved some time ago, but now it looks like the address should be liteonit.com.tw, but that doesn't respond to web requests either so I'll have to wait and see.

Hope that helps,
D.

Cat13...( Ok, Drive works great. Now for the rebate, I have the order confirmation printout from the website, the email confirmation that was sent to me and the invoice printout I got when I picked up the drive. I assume most everyone has the same. Now my question is, what is everyone going to send? some, all?)

Here is Info from a earlier reply : (I just called a PD CSR about the rebate and it has been confirmed that you can order online (which lets you use the coupon discount) then make a copy of your e-mail confirmation and send that in with the packing slip and the UPC and rebate form and all will be honored.)

<< Interface - Slave on IDE2 >>

It needs to set to secondary master.

Update the firmware if necessary - go to cdrinfo.com and cdrlabs.com and look in the forums. Before you update the firmware disable DMA, reboot, flash, reboot, and enable DMA again.

For performance, I find from personal testing that the MS Standard Dual PCI hard disk driver is superior to VIA (that won't make the difference in write failures, but my write time decreased by 14 seconds on a full burn when I switched from VIA Bus Master to the Standard Dual PCI).

The Lite-On 24B is an established drive. Probably has some limitations but I think they all do. Do a little research before you decide to toss it.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I found out though what the problem is (I think). I have a tall Antec case that requires the IDE cables to be fairly long. At any rate, one cable that was going to the DVD and CDRW drives was stretched fairly tight and pressed into the corner of one of my PCI cards. Well, one of the cable wires ended up being punctured through. That was the reason for failures on both DVD and CDRW drives. I found that after I put in my Plex and saw the same failures and error messages come up.

Basically I pulled all my junk out of the system and put it back together again examining every component. I was also upset that my TV capture card had failed when I put in the Liteon, but it appears to be just a strange coincidence. Have to still try to figure out whether it's some weird driver thing or the card is dead or if it's even the cable.

To address some of your guys' suggestions.

1. The Liteon site seems to be flaky. You put in the correct info. Iwas trying to get to it last night as well and couln't.

2. My CDRW has always been the secondary slave with no problems before with the Plex, so I assume it should be fine with the Liteon--looks like it may well be. I don't like the fact that it's how I'm setup, but it fit my cable length and drive arrangement needs. I'll probabl end up going to what you say, since I have my systm apart.

3. K7S5A is a SiS based motherboard, so the VIA driver issue isn't a problem here.

Again, thanks.

Is the $30 MIR from Pacific Digital for OD B&M only, or can I use it for OD.com?
The MIR asks for original OD register receipt, could I send in the package receipt?

Bad_Dude...(Out of Stock here where I am.)

Then get it at Staples for $59.99 by having them PM the Office Depot price and using a Staples $20 off $100 coupon.

rebates takes 1-2 months, and sometime you don't get it. oh well. tempting, but I will resist it.

<< what happen to 24x drive these days ?

price falling like...
Is it because the 32x will be out soon ?

I am so tempted to sell my 10x and get a 24x
however, someone say that u will NEVER get rebate from PACIFIC DIGITAL...

hmm...
decision, decision.....

MysticMan1, thanks for all your help!

I went over to Staples and they gave it to me for $69.99 and their $20 MIR, so i'll get it for $49.99 (plus tax in NJ)
Try Staples if your OD is out of it.

Woohoo.

That's great , but how did you that extra $10 off the price? Staples is selling it for $119.94 with $10 instant savings, $20 rebate and OD for $99.99 before rebate.

I have the Staples ad right here:
"Now $119.99 - $10 instant savings - $20 MIR = $89.94"

I went in there with a printout from OD.com that said $99.99 - $20 = $79.99. I also brought a printout of the Pac. Digital/OD MIR for $30. So I told them that OD could give it to me for $49.99.

Since Staples has a $20 MIR, the manager said he's give it to me for $69.99 to match the $49.99.

EDIT: FYI, mine is a Mitsumi drive.

Cool! That was some nice deal engineering. If you haven't open the box yet, maybe you can exchange the Mitsumi for the Lite-on version with SmartBurn.

Is yours a 4809TE Mitsumi drive?

It's odd, but the only Mitsumi at 24x that I saw on their (Mitsumi) website was 24x12x40. Is yours a 12x rewrite then, or did they used to have a different model that PD is reselling?

If you are still having problems with your new drive, try posting your problem on over this Lite-on forum at CD Freaks.com

When did you order yours? I've been trying all night and it says it's backordered. The coupons only work with products that are in stock. I called and was told that they would be replenished, but she didn't know when. Is there any way around this?
