Thank you MysticMan1! I was bummed because my OfficeMax Cendyne was an AOpen rather than a Lite-On. I checked every OfficeMax in the city and none of their Cendyne 24x CD-RWs had Smart Burn. I picked up the last Pacific Digital at the nearby Office Depot this weekend and it was a Lite-On, and I saved $5 over the OfficeMax price too! Thanks!

Nothing wrong with the Aopens relative to Liteons. One advantage was that Liteon could do SD2. But, Aopen can do that as well with CloneCD. Look at CDRInfo and you will see that Aopen's better at somethings and worse at others relative to the Liteon.

The article at CDRInfo was what convinced me to switch to Lite-On. The article said that AOpen was fast at copying a disc protected with SafeDisk 2, but that the copy did not work. See http://www.cdrinfo.com/hardware/aopen2440/page6.shtml ("For the SD2 tests we used the 'No One Lives For Ever' and 'Emperor Battle for Dune' CD titles. We used the AOpen CRW2440 both as reader/writer. The produced backup didn't work using the same or any drive we tested with. Therefore, the AOpen CRW2440 cannot produce SD2 working backups."). I may never have a need to backup an SD2 disc, but it just bugged me that the AOpen couldn't do the job if necessary.

I was able to score one this morning via the website -- used the "fat-billfolds" coupon link for the $20 off $75 --- It will be delivered tomorrow --- So we'll see who the Mfg is. ---- This was in the Cincinnati area! I had to delete the cookies from my system first before I ordered. That bought up the $99 price and applied the coupon.

YMMV- good luck

Just a reminder to all that are sending in the rebate to make sure u send in the "Original Receipt". I had to call into the rebate center because the receipt that came with my burner looks like a copy. The CSR said that it needs to be the Original Cash Register Receipt as stated on the rebate form. I asked if the invoice that came was okay and she said that it might work, but that they were really being sticklers on this rebate so that I might be rejected. She even said that the original rebate form needs to be sent in. Why do they make this so hard.

Question: Has anyone noticed how slowly the tray opens on this drive? I took one back because I thought it had a problem, but the second one that I got does the same thing. Someone else I know that got the drive has the same thing happening...I hope that these drives don't crap out in a few months. Hey theres an Idea....I could use the exchange receipt that I have from when I took back the first drive....wonder if they will have a problem with that one....

I just got off the phone w/Cust.Rep Supervisor...I placed my order online on 1/23 and was supposed to receive it today. I called to find out the status and was told that it was placed on backorder. I asked how could that be when it showed in-stock on the 1/23. She said that after they receive the orders they go to pull it and their distribution centers may not have it. I'm told that the distribution center in my area (SF BAY) aren't plannin' to get anymore. After talking to the supe, and telling her my situation w/the $20 coupon, she said that I could pick it up locally and send her my info so that she'd credit me the $20.

So those that placed orders after 1/23 w/in the SF Bay Area, you may not get your drive. Better check your status...

i went to the OD in B'ham, AL because this CDRW is backordered on the internet. I tried to get them to use an internet coupon, but they didn't let me. I eventually price-matched from their own website... I got the price down from 149.00 to 99.00. I am sending in my rebate tomorrow. Pretty good deal... it's a Mitsumi.

$149.00 IN STORE
$ 99.00 PM from OD website
-$ 30.00 PD rebate

THat was an old review done using CloneCD before AWS and using firmware 0.95. It's at 2.02 now. Read my post a page or so back regarding Aopen and SD2. For anyone that got the Aopen, there's no need to return it thinking you got crap. I wouldn't have returned mine if I had recalled at the time the AWS feature when it was discussed on the clonecd site (wasted an hour hunting down a Liteon). Similarly, someone here also mentioned that Mitsumi 24x is possibly able to do AWS SD2 copies as well (although the model wasn't determined).

Hey MysticMan1 - thanks for the tips you PM'd to me. I ended up calling Office Depot Customer Service & ordered one over the phone. I claimed that I had trouble ordering from their web site (which was true). I also stated that I had a coupon for $20 off $75 that valid until 1/30. The rep applied the coupon as a "low price guarantee" so that brought the price of the burner down to $79.99 (no sales tax in NH<IMG alt=Grin src="i/ratingicons/grin.gif" border=0>) before the mail-in rebate. I asked the rep about the $30 rebate because I was concerned about the time limitations on it as the burner was back-ordered. She directed me to a toll-free # for their rebates. I also asked for an order confirmation so the rep faxed a copy of my order to me within minutes. Great customer service!

I proceeded to call the rebate center. They were less friendly than OD, though not really mean either; they just failed to give me the warm fuzzies that OD did. The person at the rebate center stated that my situation was cool as long as my rebate package was postmarked 10 days at most after my purchase which puts my deadline date at Feb. 7th (gulp!). I guess if I don't receive my drive by then, I'll cancel the order. Who knows, there will probably be another hot deal coming my way by then.

Just got back from my local OD with a rebadged Lite-On for ~$56 after coupon, rebate and taxes.

Happened to notice they had these when I was in the store yesterday and did my research on these last night.

Great thread, great deal.

Drive arrived today as promised -- Gotta love that free next day delivery! It seems that the box is in both french and english -- After checking out the box, it stated smart burn technology, which meant it was a Lite-on drive in the box (24102b) --- it was. I am hoping that I don't run into the same problem Spinn has since it is also a 11/01 mfg date.

Great deal! now it is time to fill out the rebate.

Just a point to make about the "purchase" date when ordering on-line. The date of purchase at a B&M is the date you bought it simply because you are there and can physically receive it and carry it out the door, thus the transaction is completed. The purchase date for an on-line purchase is the same, in that it is the date the transaction is COMPLETE, and that is the date you RECEIVE it, and not the date your ordered it. Hope this helps.

MY Nov 2001 manufacture date drive seems to work fine...

Well except it seems to have crashed my secondary IDE channel in Win Me (which was easily fixed), but in Win XP its ok, no problems.

3 questions...

1) How long does it normally take you to clone a cd disk to disk using clone cd, with this new drive. A disk with no protection.

2) Is the software bundled with this drive anygood? I only have cloneCD for XP.

3) Anybody got a copy of Nero 5.5 or Easy CD Creator 5 that they would be willing to part with or copy for me (copy preferably? I'm sure we could reach an agreed upon price and I would send paypal?

PM me if interested.

Ok I've been messing with it in Me, and then went back to XP and its not there.
SO...
I redetect it, and it finds it instantly.
Then I restart, to see if it stays.
Again, not ther, redetect it, again found.
Restart again...
Again not there.

Anybody have any ideas? Why isn't XP remembering my new burner?

Memory problems? Sorry, I couldn't resist the geek humor

Seriously, check Microsofts knowledge base....I remember hearing something about XP keeping track of items....I had the same problem with my USB Sidewinder on XP......kept having to unplug and plug it in again to get recognized......I went back to 98se....seems more stable to me......I didn't notice the increase in speed in XP either, except for startup and shutdown. Whoopee doo! I don't reboot very oftem anyway

Are you using a abit mainboard?I have heard over on the Lite-on forum at CD Freaks.com Link to forum that some people are having problems with the Lite-on 24X drive when installed on computers with the Abit mainborad.
