The Deal: Staple is selling the Pacific Digital 8x Drive for $129.99 before a $30 MIR, Sam's Club has it for $78.51 (no rebate), have Staples price match (110%) the $78.51 price at Sam's Club and send in the $30 rebate = $43.36 + taxes.

Of course all PM's are YMMV, but people have already been doing this PM for a a number of days, so the info is in the staples computer system.
You can call 1-800-333-3330 to PM or PM online using Staples live customer support.

BTY: Some people have been able to successfully do this PM in a Staples store by using a printout of the Sam's club web page and having them call a local Sam's club store to verify the price and that it's still in stock. Staples stores do not PM internet stores. YMMV

That's just some BS, nowhere on the Sam's Club web page does it say that it's a clearance item, call back and talk to a different CSR or do the PM online using Staples live customer support.

I couldn't find it on Office Max's website, but I swear I've seen that exact drive in the back. I also know that the PD drive they do have is one of the ones on sale this week. Again, if the drive is the same, OM has a $50 rebate. After the 115% price match that would bring the drive to $72.29 + tax - $50 rebate = $22.29 + tax AR. It's at least worth checking out.

Either that csr called Sam's and was told it clearance or she knows from's Sam's pricing that it is indeed clearance. Any time a Sam's Club item ends in .x1, it's a clearance item.

Another thing I noticed while at Sam's is they have two different model numbers for this drive and they are right next to each other on the shelf. If the csr happens to call Sam's to verify the price, make sure the person at Sam's doesn't look at the wrong tag. The drive with model U-30213 is listed as an 8x +/- drive and is priced at $124.xx. The one on clearance is listed as a 8x +/4x - Staples carries BOTH model numbers

Speak with a supervisor, ask her to go to the Sam's Club site and find that it is a clearance item.
It is not.

Total cost, including tax before rebate $86.03, after rebate, $56.03

A Officemax PM wouldn't work, they always include the rebate in any PM, so their after rebate price of $69.99 would be lower than the price at Sam's club.

It doesn't say it's clearance on the web site but it definitely is.

I bought mine a few days ago when the $98.xx price was listed so I'm gonna have to try and get another pm instore. And don't be suprised if the price drops again.

I bought mine a few days ago when the $98.xx price was listed so I'm gonna have to try and get another pm instore. And don't be suprised if the price drops again.

Mine is the NEC model. I'm not sure I understand how I can flash it with the liteon firmware so that I can change the book setting.

That is what I'm really interested in.

It looks like Staples has decided that they don't want to do the PM to Sam's club and is saying it's a clearance item so they can avoid doing the PM.

You don't want to flash the 2500 with lite-on firmware (not sure it's even possible). I flashed mine with Herrie's hacked firmware which permits changing the book setting:

If you don't need a DVD burner today there are lots of good deal on DVD burner posted here every week, so just wait for the next one.

Keep in mind that the cost of media for dual layer drives will be around $5 or $6 per disc and burn at 2.4x speed which will take you about 30 mins to burn one dics, so most people will continue to burn single layer dics long after dual layer drives are avaiable. IMHO

Went to Sam's Club today in Corona, CA to just buy one rather than dealing with some CSR at another store, and Sam's has them now for $175. So it seems as if this deal is dead.

You must have been looking at the external drive. The internal was never $175.

Well, it was my mom who went for me and gave me that story. Any way, come to find out they were just OOS and the one PD 8x they did have was that much. I went to the store in Fullerton this morning and picked it up for the low low price. So all good now!
