If you can wait a few months they will probably drop the price again because the "dual layer" dvd drive that store 8.5GB will be out.
link
Or wait for the blu-ray link and 25Gb/side

I haven't seen the ad, yet, but if the Pacific Digital drive is included in next week's sale, look for serial numbers starting with 4300, 4700 and 4800. These are Lite-On 8x drives, either 811's or 851's. If the deal on other Pacific Digital Lite-On's is good enough, check CdFreaks.com Forums for info about flashing them to 8x drives.

The Pacific Digital 4x drives were mostly rebadged NEC 1300A drives.

What's the all around best dual 8x there is? I've seen 10 diff brands lately but so far from
what i can gather the Lite-On's or the NEC drive seem to be the one's to get. I'd like to
get myself another pioneer but @ 100 i'd rather get a cheapy and save 40 bones.

Hey guys,
The SKU# on the OM Website is incorrect. The SKU# corresponded to the 4X PD is actually the 8X. My store just got only two in both are NEC 2500A. By the way, the 8X PD drives are discontinued everywhere except at OM for now.

I picked up the Khypermedia a while back on another one of these OM deals, it is been solid for me, I have burnt 100 DVD and a couple 100 CDRs with no coasters. The +R/RW works with my DVD players so I am happy.

The last SKU# in the newspaper ad is #2067-8401 and if you click on this LINK and go to item #11 you will see tthat it says "Pacific Digital (U-30182) Internal 4x DVD Burner".
Are you saying this SKU# is for the 8x Pacific Digital drive??? and it's selling in your store for $69.99 after the $30 instant rebate and $50 MIR ??

Yes that is correct. The SKU# is for the 8X instore. The PD 4X has been gone for a long time. I just did the inventory for my store yesterday and I did go over the store SKU# and I put it in the SAP system and it came up as the 8X.

Thanks.. What I meant to say was the local OM didnt have the serial # associated with NEC.

I went back today and was able to exchange my PD for a serial # with "4323XXXXXX" (Lite-On).

I am happy...

I wish someone could tell me why NEC is the best. I got the PD rebadged Lite-on 851S and have yet to burn a single coaster at any speed. If 100% burn success can be bettered then please tell me how because I will switch!

The LiteOn and NEC drives are about eqaul, the main different is the NEC drive burns DVD-R media at 8x and the LiteOn burns DVD-Rs at 4x, but the LiteOn ripping speed is faster and has support for BitSetting with a firmware update, the NEC 2500a doesn't offer BitSetting, although the guys over at cdfreaks.com have been working on a firmware hack that will add BitSetting to the NEC 2500a, but it's still in beta and they need to fix some problems they ran into.

Hrmm, so that's why my drive only burns at 4x. The box says 8x +/- RW. So, what's the problem here? Is this expected to be fixed any time soon that anyone knows of?
