Dead PCI slots in my Shuttle AK31 r3.1 mobo

What the hell, my motherboard PCI slots 5 and 6 (furthest away from AGP port ) are non-functional. I bought a turbine fan that blows out of the PCI card opening so in order to create some airspace between the turbine fan and my Leadtek GF3 Ti200 AGP card, I had to move my network card and my sound card further away (to PCI slots 5 and 6). I tried placing my network card or Audigy sound card in either of those two slots (5 or 6) and Win2k does not detect them. Is there some setting in the bios that I have to enable? I know my network card has to be on a Busmaster-enabled PCI slot but don't all the PCI slots in the AK31A mobo busmaster enabled?

BTW, with the turbine fan sucking air from the vicinity of my GF3 Ti200 card, I can oc'ed the video card to 230/525 with zero aritifacts from Artifact Tester 5.

The AK31 is just weird.. I got a new sound and network card the other day.. the computer won't boot if I put either one in the 3rd or 4th PCI slots.. strange. But oh well, who really needs 6 PCI slots on a home PC?

Seems like I am not the only out there with bad PCI slots in the Shuttle AK31A r3.1 mobo.

I haven't had any problems yet but I'm only running my sound card in 2 and my modem in 4 (counting away from AGP, as you did). I hope this isn't going to be the case...it's one of the reasons I went with this board--in case I needed those slots. I did have my chipset fan go out on the north bridge just recently...so that was a pain considering I just got this board a month ago!!!

Are you sure there dead and not IRQ clashed out, a mobo that was a good example of this was abit be6rev2, if you were using all four ide slots with the highpoinyt controler the mobo effeectively only had 3 usable pci slots unless you manual assigned a open irqs to the pci slots in the bios. And then there was no guarently window would recognize the manual assignments. Pci slots 1 and 5 were useless (pci 1 shared with agp and pci 5 shared with the isa slot and the highpoint controler) unless you could get the device to share a irq you were screwed with those slots. The best bet is to look at the shuttle manual and see how the irqs are assigned to the pci slot/decieves on the mobo and looking at device manager in windoze you got a IRQ problem and not a mobo pci dead slot problem. :frown:

Here are how my cards are set up in my AK31A:

AGP - Gainward Geforce3 Ti200/450 GS
PCI 1 -
PCI 2 - Diamond MX300 Aureal Vortex2 sound card
PCI 3 -
PCI 4 - Adaptec 2930 SCSI card
PCI 5 -
PCI 6 - Linksys LNE100TX network card

Everything works great, no problems at all.

You are right that I probably had the IRQs for PCI slot 5 & 6 not assigned correctly. I am using the default Bios "Safe Mode" setting. Anybody knows how the IRQs are assigned with this setting? I don't know if anybody manually had to assign the IRQs to each PCI slots for each of them to work?
