Hey, I've heard bout the dead pixel plague that exists in many people's LCD displays, that has been dicouraging some people from buying a LCD display, but what I was wondering, is how come I've never heard a complaint about this, on laptops, which have sported LCD's as long as they have existed, cell phones, gameboys, and all other TFT screens, TV's and the list goes on. Anyone ever had any problem with one of those devices having dead pixels? If not I wonder why only flat panel monitors have this problem.

You just haven't been listening long enough. I've read complaints here, elsewhere and even magazine editorials on laptop dead pixels.

I've seen at least a couple of posts here from PDA owners with dead pixels.

> cell phones, gameboys
Much smaller number of pixels, much lower chance of dead pixels, and manufacturers more willing to discard bad screens instead of using them.

160x120 mono = 19,200 picture elements
320x240 color = 76,800 pixels / 230,400 picture elements (color - R,G,B)
1280x1024 color = 1,310,720 pixels / 3,932,160 picture elements

So you can see why a 17" color LCD is more likely to have bad pixel problems than a mono Palm or cell phone.

I've got a laptop with a dead subpixel - one pixel in it will appear light blue when it is supposed to display darkness.

Well i guess there are people with that problem on laptops, I've never actually seen a dead pixel in real life, I'm going to be getting a 16ms 17" monitor (LCD) sometime soon, and I want it to be black, and overall great, and available at bestbuy/compusa/microcenter, so i can return it, if it has dead pixels.

i had a gameboy ages ago, one of the original ones that started developing a line of dead pixels starting from the left going right... quite a few of them! all were stuck on black

I guess I've been an extremely lucky fvck than...I've never seen one on any of the laptops, digicams, camcorders, or LCD monitors that I've bought over the years (several IBM Thinkpads, Dell notebook, Sony PDA, Canon digicam, Canon camcorder, Casio portable TV player, NEC LCD monitor, and a Planar LCD monitor). A variety of vendors on a variety of devices...

I would be extremely pissed off if I forked out 4, 5, or 6 bills of my hard-earned money on a brand new LCD monitor only to have dead/hot pixels ANYWHERE on it, brand spankin' new, right out of the box. Maybe after several years of use (after the warranty period), maybe, just maybe I could understand and tolerate it but not out of the box; I would never accept such merchandise...One of my IBM Thinkpads is almost 5 years old, not a single dead/hot pixel anywhere on it's little 10.4" TFT screen!

thats WHY they have warranties goofy, because stuff like that cannot be 100% prevented, absolutely NOTHING is perfect

I've got 3 dead pixels on my SXGA+ (1400x1050) laptop. All black, but there's one in the middle of the screen. If you don't know they're there, you probably won't notice it because the pixels on SXGA+ screens are so small. But once you know it's there, it bugs the hell out of you.
