That's exactly the kind of info I was waiting for. Looks like the old bait and switch, and the Office Max managers are going to hear about this one all over the country from the AT effect. I wish they hadn't wasted my time with this. I guess I'll have to waste some more of theirs.

I used a few btc cd roms in systems that I built (digital research boxed) one still works great, the other died on a seldom used pc having read probably not more than 20 cd's.It would spin up but I think the laser gave out...

I also got the BTC drive, tested it on a ACER 16X CDR and failed during a direct cd to cd copy. Taking it back....

do you think its too late to return the btc drive to staples. I bought i from the presidents day sale deal. Has anyone returned something that was defective after the 14-day return policy (to staples)?

Hold on everyone,
I also got the BTC drive, but gotta tell ya this thing smokes.
Yeah the drive quality seems kinda cheesy. Yeah the NTI cd-maker 2000 sw it comes with is cheesy. But it works!
Im running total basic Dell GX150 933 mhz with 98se no less.
Ive done 2 tests so far, on those gold looking IBM CDrs that were on some hot deal with the 100 pack- worked fine.

For the ultimate cut-rate burn, I tried one of the Value Disk 32x disks that came in the 200 pack from OM on some deal a few weeks back and it burned 550mb in 3:33!!!

Sure, there are probably better quality drives, for not much more, but at least for me, it worked ok.

**** UPDATE*****
Like everyone says.....
THIS THING SUX ACTUALLY- I did some more testing and it works sometimes, sometimes not. It crashed my system, wont get out of TOC mode, wont close- its going back, oh well.....

At some staples, only computer systems and the specific items listed on the back are 14 day return policy. My local staples told me a HD was 14 days. I went to two other staples and they claimed it was 30 days. Just check with different stores near you. Call before you go, and get the person's name.

I got mine yesterday....I was gonna keep it no matter what and throw it in my wife's computer....I did receive the same one that everyone else got the BTC drive....I only had one problem with it....IT DIDN'T WORK!!! Wouldn't read any CD...it did burn...for a minute then it just stopped in the middle of the burn. Tried Nero CD speed and it wouldn't read....So its boxed back up and I'm taking it back!!!

Yet another satisfied BTC customer. I suggest everyone who got a BTC return them, just so that companies stop rebadging crap.

Like I said before, there's been a deal for a $45 CD-RW every week for the past 5 weeks, so I would expect another $45 CD-RW deal in the next couple of weeks, but the bad part is that almost all of these companys that sell rebadged drive (Cendyne, Pacific Digital, I/O Magic, Polaroid) seem to be moving away from buying their rebadged drive from the better CD-RW mfg like a Lite-on or TEAC and moving to the lesser known brands like BTC, Acer and others like them. So, the days of getting good CD-RW at a low price using a coupon and a rebate may be coming to a end.

Oh well, im pissed. I got the BTC drive as well. Argh.
UPS is going to pick it up to return it tomorrow.

Why did this deal turned out sour? Because I was able
to jump on it in time.

My advice is to return this piece of crap. I got mine Sunday and it quit working today. I returned it to OfficeMax and got in on this Deal. CyberDrive 32x12x48 packaged by Pacific Digital for $85 out the door. Read the review I have linked there. It supposedly can burn Safedisc2 discs.

Shoot. I was too quick, removed the UPC, and mailed in the rebate. Guess that means I'm stuck with this thing? With all the savings from deals I've received over the years, I'm not too worried about this loss.

MysticMan1 according to KeinoDoggy who actually has one( originating thread here) of these( my local B&M did not have it yet ) it is that CyberDrive reviewed just a different software pkg ( does not matter to me as I bought full take it in the can Nero online one night about 1am in desperation for a reliable software....lol )

OK..call me a moron...I took back the one that didn't work and asked for replacement. The manager gave me a brand new exact one like I brought back...literally, because this one did not work either!!!!!!!!!!!! ARGHHH!!! The bios wouldn't detect it...if I put it on the same channel of any other drive it caused all those NOT to get detected...If I put it on it's own channel it wouldn't get detected!!! This thing is a real piece of #@*!.

ScrapSilicon, greetings, to you. Man, you are lucky that you didn't get in on this. I bought two of these and they are both going back. I'm not even going to install this crap. OfficeMax is probably regretting advertising the "Smartburn" feature, 'cause these drives don't have it.

OfficeMax and Staples will post their ads for next week's sales Friday morning after midnight, so I would wait to see if they will have any good sales on CD-RW drive in their ads.
