Just came back from BestBuy and they have the WD 40GB (2MB cache 72krpm) for 99.99 with a 40MIR. I pricematched it with CC's price of 59.99. Probably have to haggle with CSR to get rebate that comes with receipts so YMMV.

Rebate is addressed to Calais, ME 04619 and seems to be from BestBuy's Rebate center and not WD's.

Rebate ended Saturday 10/5/2002.

Some good stuff provided by hnsn82 --

Some of the drive are the Special Edition ones, I got 2 of them ( out of 4 I bought )

To identified your drive being the 8 MB one look for the WDC serial number on the bottom of the drive :
--- WCADxxxxxxxx for the 8 MB cache
--- WMADxxxxxxxx for the 2 MB ones

In addition to verify , you'll see a pink slip when you open the drive , it will says added bonus
The drive I got also have 400 JB for the model number ( on the actual drive ) --> verified with westerndigital.com it is the 8 MB ones

So go grab yours now
40 Gigs 8 MB cache for $ 15 can't be wrong

cheers

Update - Looks like you still have to open the box and check if the model number is 400JB on the HD. I got two HDs with serial WCADxxxxxx, but one isn't labeled model 400JB

Make sure you get a Box that says "3-year warranty" as WD is changing their warranty effective October 1st. Only 'SE' drives will carry a 3-year warranty after 10/1, all other drives just a 1-year warranty.

Read update here:

Sounds like he is saying the rebate prints out with the receipts. I just looked through the ad and did not see this in there though, so I dunno... I do see the CC price in their ad though.

I am going to go out there tomorrow and check it out, and then I will post back.

Rebate offer number is 29605. Limit is one per household (I got 2) and offer expires 10/5. I don't think the rebate is online.

Is the rebate for Best Buy or is it manufacturer's (for Western Digital).

So this is a $40 MIR B&M only. Looks like I'll have to PM BB w/ CC tomorrow. I was just wanted to make sure that I can print the $40 rebate form. Just in case the customer service rep/cashier/manager at Best Buy decides to keep it after pricematching.

Most likely a Best Buy rebate.

I think that the best course of action was revealed by the last WD/BB rebates, on the 120GB version a week or so back. Buy the drive then go back later with just your receipt to get the PM. Some people just went out to their cars for 15 mins, I went back the next day. That assures you'll get the rebate receipt/form and it also keeps from reminding the CSR that BB had a rebate on the drive.

These ads here are worse than those in store flyers. You guys are worse.
Dream on deals, impossible to get and when are possible it means a stupid store clerk, all the stores in a square mile radius, a lot of time on your hands, little dignity etc.
Be real.

I concur with FriedRiceBob. Some deals might not work and some take more effort than others. Everything has some risk involved. I went into BestBuy to get the 40GB HD for $60. When they PM'd they also gave me the rebates which made it a good deal so I passed it along. The caveat is that BB might cancel the rebates. That's why most people don't like MIR because of the added risk. If you're looking for guarantees, buy from the Men's Warehouse

stevejst,
For a "Senior" member, you sure seem to have forgotten some of the rules; in particular the one about thread crapping. No doubt that some deals that are posted are in the "YMMV" catagory but that is why that saying was made up. There are no guarantees in life other than death and taxes. Also, as was mentioned, if it is not your "cup of tea", don't drink it. Which is a prelude to "if you don't have anything good to say, don't say anything." I believe that exact wording is in the AT rules.

The Pensacola, FL Best Buy store is a big NO GO on this deal. :| I called them up today and talked to a CSR, here's how his song-and-dance went: He said that I could PM the drive vs. CC ad for $59.9x and get an additional 10% of the difference knocked off on top of that, ~$4.00. He told me that PM'ing would invalidate any mail-in rebates, so I won't be able to do the $40 MIR. Something sounds very fishy and flaky about this.

Any suggestions on how I can butter up a CSR there and get the darn rebate? :|

I didn't do this deal, but I did it once with an 80gb drive. I pricematched to CC for a lower price, then there was a rebate on top of that. The girl that rang me up, was like "wow, you're getting a really good deal"

PMed to CC(carried the sales circular..) at my local B&M BB after buying ..went to CSR counter(had pocketed the rebate receipt and rebate form..) and popped open the CC circular ..instant satisfaction and(mo' money..) gratification. AS always YMMV..and don't call and tell them the deal..just do the deal.. p.s. :disgust:Outpost sucks

I got it today. PM'd to CC right at register then handed me rebate. The only thing i worry about is, is bestbuy rebate center going to see the reciept and not honor it becuase it was pricematched. Since nobody could of possibly gotten their rebate back yet(or even sent it in yet) there is no way to tell. In reality bestbuy is not supposed to pricematch after the final rebate price, so they should not be going under $59.99 after rebate.

Got one! Brought in sales circular from CC pricematched it for $59.99+tax. Sales manager signed the yellow/orange form for pricematch. Did not get extra 10% pricematch guarantee though. The rebate receipt (indicated reg 99.99 with match competitor price) and rebate form too.

Here's what I did:

1. Bought the drive first. You should get three receipts. One is the usual receipt saying the drive cost $99.99. The second is the rebate receipt which also states the drive cost $99.99. The last is the rebate form.

2. Go the the customer service counter. DO NOT show the rebate receipt and the rebate form. Just give them the CC ad and the receipt and ask for a PM

overall:
$99.99
- 44.00 (110%)
----------
$55.99 + tax - $40 MIR = $20.61

edit: my bad......got too exciting while typing this!

Shouldn't it be calculated like this??

99.99 - Best Buy price
59.99 - Circuit City price
-------
40.00 (price difference) x 110% = 44.00

then...

99.99 - original price
44.00 - 110% pricematch guarantee
-------
55.99+tax - $40 MIR = $20.75 (tax is 8.5%)

Probably the best way to do this PM as Tchen811 & others mentioned to avoid the rebate receipt reflecting that a pricematch occured.

Tchen811, looks like you got a lucky break!!!!! :Q
