hot deal. $10 cheaper than newegg. How do you think the overclocking potential of these is? It seems odd that all the non-EE quad cores are rated at 95W even the slow ones. Wouldn't this consume a lot less than the the Q9650 which runs at 3GHz and has 3 times more cache?

The multiplier is 7x so unless you are using top notch memory/motherboard, overclocking will be quite limited. I'd say around 3.2 GHz is the average with good mobo/ram. Even though it's rated at 95W, it actually runs a lot cooler at stock speed... you know because the heatsink/fan included in the box is celeron-class.

From what I've read, it looks like they won't need any extra voltage until 3 GHz but, as havoti noted, you'll have to consider where you can go with a 7x multiplier. I've read about people typically getting 3.3 to 3.5 GHz with a good board. I'm stripping my second PC and selling my Opteron 180 and DFI S939 Expert board while they're still fetching silly prices on ebay, so I'm getting this Q8200 and a Gigabyte EP45-UD3L, which I'll hopefully break even on.

I can't tell you much about the efficiency versus the Q9xxx's, but I did find that they've recently released a new Q8200S stepping which is rated at 65W. I'm wondering if they've detuned the "S" version somehow.
