SunnyD: I assume that Newegg uses their RMA dept. as the return address on shipping labels so that returns are sent there when customers change their minds and refuse deliveries.

I have also used a load of Samsung ODD's, including eight SH-S223C's I got on a similar deal several month's ago. I have not heard anything about any of them. I thoroughly checked the reviews before I bought them, as I did notice particularly poor reviews on this model. The more thoughtful complaints I found at the time indicated that testing revealed a large number of write errors on high speed burns. I personally do not burn anything faster than 16x no matter what, so trying to push these +20x burners has never been an issue for me. I have one friend who does a ton of CD burning and has always chewed through burners. Yes, he chews through today's burners faster than he did back in the day when Plextor was Plextor, Teac was Teac and even the cheaper NEC's were built with solid transports. He doesn't waste his time complaining anymore. He has a case with removable 5.25" drive rails and every time one of his Sonys, Liteons or Samsungs dies he pulls it out and sticks another $20 jobber in it's place. They seem to last him about a year or so.

BTW, this drive is shallow and did not get in the way of an Antec EarthWatts EA380 PSU in a Qpack build I did.

Be sure to flash your drives to the latest firmware but you already knew that. Here is a complete listing of SH-S223C firmware versions.

Yeah, back when Pioneer made slot load drives and Toshiba made these nice DVD-ROM drives.

Well, I guess we have other hardware to get excited about nowadays anyway.

Mine came in today. My wife tells me the shipping label shows it coming from the Newegg RMA Department. I didn't pay for a recert drive... I paid for a new one. Hmm...

That's normal, believe it or not.

From what I understand, this drive is NOT a MediaTek chipset like the other 222/223 series drives are, it's some sort of samsung or toshiba chipset. Not rated as highly as the 223B,L,Q drives are.

i wonder if i should buy any of these or go with a 25$ sony opticarc or what ever they called checked out all the neg reviews (well some since there are to many to read them all) but if you get this def do the firmware update if you want it to play retail dvd in windows 7 (i dont ever play retail dvdr or rip dvd's so i wouldnt worry about it) might be tempted to give one these away as i have to give most people a dvd drive of some kinda might as well be a dvd burner ;/

THey are still at 19.99 shipped

Also SunnyD i get stuff that is new from newegg RMA department all the time very normal

I needed a new optical drive, but after doing some research, (no, not the Newegg reviews) I went with the newest Optiarc for $23.00 instead. It seemed like the safer bet.

Indeed. It's a TSST drive (as it shows up in the device manager). Ironically, the IDE version I have in my desktop has been working fine for the last 3 years.
