thats what happens if you dont ask to be put back on antoher year long contract at the end of the year.... basically they dont want their customers dumping their service for competators, so they bind you in a year at a time.

Uh, nope. I've spoken with 3 reps so far and they've all told me, without my asking, that the price stays the same at the end of the year.

Too bad about the distance though.

At sonic.net's website it says it's $44.95/mo for the first year. What happens after that year?

So, what exactly is the deal with that? If you don't contact them you suddenly find you're paying $139.95? Is it that you have to call them just before the year's up and ask to resign for another year? TIA.

Also, is this the same number you call to check distance (my address won't show on dslreports.)

Lastly, its $44 a month for a year then what?

Thank you very much

Ditto... What's the number to call? Thanks.

[or is it totally OK to just do it online?]

I'm also currently SBC 1.2/128 and I get this online:

If you read it carefully, it's projected to be $69.95 after the first year and you won't be on a contract.

1) CSR told me that the offer is set to be extended indefinately.

2) I told CSR that I wanted the Expert Plus package. The info in the CSR's system says 6mbit. I will not have service until March 8th due to carrier switching for both DSL and phone service. I asked about the whole Feb 6mbit vs March 3mbit thing. The service will still be 6mbit @ $44.99.

3) 20% off of any cingular wireless plan for using SBC for local/long dist and DSL

4) As always, SBC's promos are based on 1 year contracts. Eearly termination = $200. Failure to renew the contract means service raises to the regular $139 a month.

So does this mean the offer extends past february? I'm a little late in reading this, but the more I'm reading the more I wish I had signed on earlier... I hope its not too late...

When I called them in early Feb, they said it was their "Spring" promotion. So... I don't think this will be over.

Some more new (I hope) information:

The distance has been extended to 9500 feet. If you were denied before, try again...

The actual price is 44.99 + 5.83 FUSF = 50.82.

The debate is about whether or not the 6mbit speed would be given after Feb, not that this particular sale is over after Feb. See this package is listed as 3mbit on SBC's page, but you are actually getting 6mbit when you sign up. No one thinks that that will go on forever. We will just have to see what happens to the people who order it later.

Since Comcast is offering speeds of 3 kbps, I think it's time to go through the hassle of upgrading....again! Mama mia!
Try again. They JUST increased the distance to 9500 feet from the previous 7500 feet.

1.1 kbps???? thats worse than dial up!! you mean 1.1 mbps right? for $70/mo... thats crazy. their intro deal 1.5 mbps is only $29.99/mo first year, then 49.99/mo after.

Right, and that's why I decided to go with SBC instead. Sonic would be WAY better for newsgroups, and I'm very into newsgroups, but according to what I see in this thread, the price won't jump to $70/year if I sign with SBC, so I did. I also realize that the support from Sonic.net is infinitely superior, but right now money is the trump card. Yes, I could cancel and switch to another ISP in one year, but that would mean another change of email address. I guess it's no biggie, but I'm not used to doing that.

I'm told I can expect the changeover to happen Friday afternoon, March 5. I'm on a basic standard SBC DSL one static IP plan now at $50/mo. They don't have those now. If I want to go back to having a static IP, the only thing available will be for 5 static IPs at $70/month. I figure I'll make out OK with dynamic IP, although I've never had that. When I called and ordered Friday afternoon, the woman I talked to didn't ask me what I wanted for my username. I guess she just assumed I wanted the same one, but actually I'd like a different one. I need to ditch my current email address - Spam Spam Spam. Think I'll call them and see if it's not too late to change it. I'd just as soon have my old immutable account userid as a subaccount now.

Those are actually good reasons. I've been with sonic.net for almost 3 years and originally went sonic.net after having SBCIS for a year when it was still known as PacBell Internet and then Prodigy took over. I was actually on the 1.5Mbps/384kbps $69.95 plan since the end of January 2003 so this is more of a upgrade that is costing me $25 less and I didn't have to lose my IPs or anything. The thing with the threads and even SBC techs is that it's not from the people who set the policies or anything as the official thing in writing says it'll goto $139 after the first year and not $70. The thing with SBC isn't the dynamic IP, it's more the PPPoE protocol. I run all my own servers and domains so it's not a problem for me who I end up with but sonic has been serving me well and this is coming from someone who actually owns and runs a ISP but remotely in another state.

If you could take a second and run a speed test from this page:
http://www.dslreports.com/stest
and then copy/paste the link so you can brag about the speeds you are getting, we'd appreciate it. Always helps to get another speed test example of SBC speed

I just ran the DSLReports speed test and I'm due for my upgrade TOMORROW. I've currently got their <= 1.5 mbps download, ? upload DSL, 1 static IP, and I've had it for close to 5 years. Ordered this:

Expert Plus Package
1.5-3.0Mbps
384Kbps
1 Dynamic
$44.99

Pre-upgrade, my speed test indicated:

2004-03-04 11:54:46 EST: 1310 / 167
Your download speed : 1310517 bps, or 1310 kbps.
A 159.9 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 167968 bps, or 167 kbps

Edit: I'm 6553 feet from the CO, supposedly, so I hope these will jump a lot tomorrow afternoon.

This is a tad OT, but here goes. I just called my router tech support and they told me when I get connected to the dynamic IP Expert Plus service (upgrade from my current static IP SBC service), I will need a userid and password to configure the router.

I called SBC and was told they are connecting me scheduled for this evening around 6:00 PM. When that happens I will have to call them to set up the username and password. Fine, it's 1-877-722-3755, the basic support number.

Here's the question: I've had an account with an immutable username and 5 optional subaccounts. I've always used my immutable username and I need to change that bigtime - tons of spam. I set up a subaccount a few days ago but haven't informed everybody yet of my new email address. I was just told that my new account will also have an immutable account username and up to 10 subaccounts. Should I change my immutable username to my new preferred email address and have my old one as a subaccount or does this matter at all? I'm going to have to monitor my old immutable username email address for a while until I'm satisfied that everything I care about is coming to my new address. Thanks.
