How do you know when they've "upgraded" your service? Does it stop working? I have a static IP and I assume that when it goes dynamic, my router will no longer work until I configure it for the dynamic IP, right? Also, you have to call them and set up your account with a username and password, no? They said they were going to update me at around 5:45 PM tonight but it's about 7:00 PM.

I dont know about your username situation, something smells like BS in all the stuff they told you about user names. I guess you'll have to wait and see. Once you get upgraded you'll probably have to set your router to PPPoE and it should get the IP automatically.
As for the speed tweaks, there are a few things you can/should do for tweaking, goto dslreports.com and pick tests, and pick tweak test. That will tell you some things to look for. Once you change to PPPoE you will want to change your MTU to 1492 on your computers, default is 1500. The tweak test has info and links on how to do that. Thats the main thing.
A way to test your service to see if its upgraded is to goto the speed test and test your speed I would leave everything alone until/unless it stops working, then change router to PPPoE, then worry about the username stuff if you still cant connect.

Yes, thanks a load for all this info. They haven't changed me yet - still have my static IP and I'm hovering at 1310/217. I guess it'll not happen until at least Monday, no biggie. Yes, Almighty1, my router's WAN config wants a username and password the second I switch to PPPoE, so I'll be all over that as required (i.e. if my current stuff doesn't work).

SBC doesn't have any wording in their TOS that prevents you from downloading all you want.

Thats comcast cable, not SBC. I dont think there's any cases of SBC doing that unless you are breaking the TOS, whereas there are a bunch of cases comcast sent the letters.

They haven't upgraded me yet but I just called SBC tech support to ask if I can/should install the "internet 300" before the ugrade.

I get Matt, who eventually passes me off to 2nd level support = Tom?

He says: PPPoE? Good luck!!!
1544- 1644 is all you'll get.
Tom?: Connections dropped, a glorified dialup account, hassles of username and pw, speed nothing to brag about. Good luck!!!
I said "what?" They're promising me 3 mbps and in practice it's said to be 5-6 mbps. He's looking up my account....

He says: don't touch that CD. He says they capped my line and he doesn't see an order in for me. I said, "they screwed up?" He said his advice is stick with the static IP, period. Don't touch that CD. He said he would see what he could do to uncap my line. Well, I don't know what to make of this, really. How much faster will it be? Is a dynamic IP really that much more trouble. He's saying it absolutely is. Who would know? He would. But I have to wonder if he isn't a jerk or something. But even a jerk wouldn't say stuff like that out of nowhere. I always figured a static IP would be less problematical but I'm not the voice of experience in TCP/IP, etc. etc. etc.

watcha think?

Edit: He comes back and says they are about to uncap my service and it will be 1.5 - 6.1 mbps, and for me it should turn out around 4.0. He says that were supposed to have done that as of 3/5, actually. He says if I call and cancel my "upgrade" (which made him laugh) he said I can keep my static IP, and he HIGHLY recommends doing just that. So, my next call is the billing department to cancel.

Edit2: 5 minutes later he comes back on the line and asks me to recycle my modem. I do so and go to dslreports/stest.com and my result is this.

Basically about 3.5 download, .515 upload. He says it showing 4.0, but I guess there's overhead and he said they couldn't run me maxed or it would stress the line or something like that. He said it is only the quality of the line that's keeping me below 6 mbps. I asked if that could improve if they improved the line and he said "yes." That would happen automatically, as it were. He stressed I should call the office and cancel my order. Well, this is almost 3 times as fast as I had a few minutes ago.

Edit3: SBC's billing department voice mail system is about the worst I've ever had the misfortune to find myself in. VM hell. Utter BS. I finally get a human and he says he can barely hear me. He promises to call me back... Goddam! He lied!

Well, I finally started getting humans and I can offer this: If you want to order DSL, SBC DSL services including Dish Network and associated packages and equipment, the DIRECT number to call is: 800 579 7861, the DSL sales department... and Good Luck!

Right after uncapping my connection I got this result for speed test:

2004-03-09 18:24:58 EST: 3431 / 515
Your download speed : 3431815 bps, or 3431 kbps.
A 418.9 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 515065 bps, or 515 kbps

3 hours later I retest and it's:

2004-03-09 18:22:10 EST: 2724 / 325
Your download speed : 2724328 bps, or 2724 kbps.
A 332.5 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 325282 bps, or 325 kbps

WTF? Why would my speeds decrease by 30% in 3 hours. Some woman tried to explain this to me for fifteen minutes (load of BS) and I finally asked to talk to a 2nd level technician...

This morning the technician that had my speeds bumped up said I had 1.5 - 6.1 service. When I called a few minutes ago, the woman says the same thing. Then she talks to "provisioning" and tells me it's 1.5 - 3.0! I say, "no no no", you told me 1.5 - 6.0! Now they've got me talking to another woman who says "what you are paying for is 1.5 - 3.0." I don't know what to tell these people when they come at me like that. All I know is I had a lot higher speeds when I was talked into keeping my "Basic static IP" service this morning. SBC's beaucracy is stultifying in the extreme.

Edit: A few minutes later they get billing on the line and it's confirmed I'm paying for 1.5-6.0! They are writing up a ticket to check things out.

Yeah, do NOT install that crap they give you. Use your router to connect with pppoe. If you install the cds they give you it installs all sorts of yahoo crap. If you have a computer you dont mind screwing with you can install it temporarily to get set up, then uninstall if you like. But its not nessasary, there's some links you can follow (when I installed for someone I know I used the link in the Macintosh instructions) to activate the account. But it sounds like its already activated, so all you need is the router to connect. As for the SBC tech support, yeah they suck. The best way to get around this is to msg an official SBC tech on dslreports forums. When my upgrade was overdue, I msged one and they put it through in minutes. And without any crap about (make sure your modem is directly connect to computer etc etc).
As well, I'm afraid to call tech support. I dont want them "changing" my service to the 1.5-3 that I'm actually paying for. Perhaps I'm too cynical, but I can imagine someone whacking it down to 3mbit for someone calling and complaining.
Final note: the best speed you can achive is going to be a bit above 5+mbit throughput (with the TCP and DSL overhead), and for upload its going to be around 500-515. These are throughput which is generally what the speed tests will show.

Devistater, I'm getting 1/2 those speeds. I've got a strong feeling that they capped me at 3.2 mbps or so. I'm getting consistent DL speeds of 2719-2724 mbps. Earlier in the day (before they capped me) it was over 3500. I'm going to bitch. I'm actually supposed to be getting 1.5 - 6.0 mbps, not 1.5 - 3.0.

I'm not on PPPoE. I cancelled that because they said they could get me 1.5 - 6.0 with my static IP, so what the hell? But I'm convinced they're screwing with me. Maybe I should go to the DSLReports forums and see if I can hook up with an SBC tech but I've never done that so I'm going to call SBC tech support and try to get a 2nd level technician who is amenable. In my experience there's a lot of great people who work for SBC and a lot of duds too. If I get another outsourced CSR/support person who sounds like they have English as a 2nd language I may just hang up on them. So far, they've been a total waste of time. They don't know their job and just try to feed you a standard bill of goods, are obviously unable to see the issues from the customer's point of view - my experience. The worst part of dealing with SBC is hacking the beaurocracy. It's formidable a lot of the time.

After complaining yesterday evening that my speed had decreased 20-30% since the morning the put in a trouble ticket and I got a call a couple hours later from a guy (left a voice mail message) saying that my line wouldn't support more than 3.2. Today, my phone goes dead - voice and DSL and I'm on my cell phone trying to find out what's up and I see a guy outside my house with a screwdriver at my phone box. He says they are trying to improve my line and they expect to remove a "bridge tap", some kind of "loop" that may be degrading my line. That's to happen within a day, maybe this afternoon. They said I can expect a call telling me they've done this.

Regretting my changeover already.
Switch phone and ISP over to SBC (phone was MCI.)
Phone came over before scheduled date.
DSL is now 2 days overdue and I don't even have the self install kit sent to me yet. SBC keeps "investigating" into what happened, but never had any idea. They take my number and tell me they will call me, which obviously never happens.
I think I am going to cancel this crap and go back to MCI.

Why did you switch phone service (I assume you mean long distance)? Although SBC is running some good deals on long distance, $3 a month gets you 3 cents a minute USA anytime anywhere, no minimum calls, and your local toll calls are included for 3 cents a min (without this plan, local toll calls can be massive charges depending where you live). Or I think they have a 5 cents a min for no monhtly charge.
BTW, what kinda internet (price/speed type) was MCI giving you?
If you have a router and a DSL modem, you dont have to wait for the install kit if your line is active.
Last time I helped someone with it a couple months ago, there's a temporary user/pass for the router to sign on. Then there's a webpage you go to to activate your account where you get a username/password. Then after thats done, you use those newly assigned user/pass in the router and you are set. I would avoid the yahoo software crap like the plague if you can, or at least uninstall it if you think you have to install it initially.

Finally, if SBC is giving you the runaround on the phone, msg one of the official SBC techs on dslreports. They are DANG fast (when my upgrade was overdue I msged one and got a response AND The upgrade within like 10 mins), and very helpful.

Phone service was through MCI for local service as well. This has been back to SBC for like 3 weeks already. I only changed because SBC wont give you DSL unless you use them for phone service as well. I've got a crapload of DSL equipment, but I guess the issue is that I dont know a username or password.

If they don't respond today, I'll try the DSLreports thing.

The guy came and went who removed the "bridge tap" which they thought would/might improve my connection. I have the same speed now:

2004-03-11 13:05:58 EST: 2724 / 325
Your download speed : 2724328 bps, or 2724 kbps.
A 332.5 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 325282 bps, or 325 kbps.

I called them and talked to a technician for a while. He said that I'm 11800 feet from the CO! I said I went to a site that said I was 6500 feet from the CO and he said sites like that typically use databases but SBC has ways of testing it and mine's 11800 (don't know if he was BSing me there or not) and that's the reason I'm at 3.2 instead of 6.0 and there's nothing they can do about it unless they (eventually) have a remote terminal (uses fiberoptics) for my area some time in the future. He said I could call them periodically and ask if they've done that. He said that as things are if they tried boosting my speed significantly I'd be apt to have frequent drops. So, I guess they have, in essense, capped my line. My speed tests at www.dslreports/stest are very consistently like what you see above.

If you're not getting the response from SBC one way you try another, is my experience. The extent and complexity of their organization rivals Dell, maybe surpassing it. Call again, call a different number - they seem to have infinite toll free numbers. In my experience, they have a lot of very helpful people, smart people, cool people, but there are duds and they have some off-shore support too I think. Keep trying - the squeaky wheel gets the grease.

You dont need user and pass, except a temp one that everyone gets. Then you log onto a special website where you register and get a perm user/pass that you pick. If you can get the temp user/pass name and the website location from a tech (either call or one of the ones on dslreports) you will be all set (I outlined the procedure in a post above).
