you're most likely be seeing 6mbit, 3mbit is only for new subscriber that comes later in march... the 6mbit/608k profiles as I have heard, have all been done which mean there is no 3mbit/384kbps at the moment. Its just a conservative way of rating their package because not too many people can get 6mbit due to distance or line quality.

Same here almost exactly. I renewed too a couple months ago, but for 1.5/256. I will be calling tomorrow to see if I can switch, I dont see why not, they will get more money out of me Also I'm dang close as well, I think they put a remote office out here for our specific development and I had this massive cap on mine to get me down to 1.5 mbit. Its funny too, the guy wrote down the cap on a business card and stuck it into the telephone box. I've always regretted not changing the numbers a little on another pacbell card I had [/quote]

let me know if you can upgrade.

Just called. I called the 877 number on the bill I forget exactly what it is. Then I pushed the numbers for bill inquires. I waited maybe 30 seconds and a guy picked up. I told the guy I wanted to upgrade my DSL service speed and he transfered me to the proper department. This time I waited about 5 mins (which still isn't that bad). The guy who answered was very nice on the phone and it took maybe 1 or 2 minutes for him to get it all setup. Apparently it takes about a week to go into effect, so since I called today, he gave me a date of the 11th for when my speed would go up. After it was all over he was saying that he had just noticed the SBC price lowering this monday and that I should tell my friends about it since it was a pretty good price for the speed you get. I told him I already had, I posted on a host deal place on the internet
My existing contract was no problem, he never mentioned it and I didn't either. I'm guessing they just convert it and make it into a new 1 year contract. So I had like 10 months left from last time I changed, now its probably 12 months again.

Summary: Existing SBC contract no problem. I spent under 10 mins total on the phone and he was very nice and polite so it was a painless call. 1 week speed change time. Only $5 more for me (I had a $40 a month plan) for double the speed.

BTW, no I did NOT mention/ask about 6mbps. Since he's not a tech he probably wouldn't know, and besides I dont want to jinx anything. When it comes if its 6mbps that will be awesome. And I especially won't mention it if I do get it. If its not 6mbps, its still a good deal. And I wouldn't want SBC to hurry and implement thier 3mbps vs 6mbps tier. From what I understand from rumor, right now they dont have a specific 3mbps plan setup, so the techs just use the 6mbps one thats already there when doing the upgrade. So, I suggest that everyone thinking/ordering this plan do not ask them about it on the phone.

heh we are in the same boat. i did the exact same thing today, from 40 to 45. Only took 10 minutes, it was painless.
I hope we get 6mbit/608upload forever! (fingers crossed)
they also said when the 1 year term ends you are still only charged 45 a month. Which is good (might be good now and bad later) but like if you
do a 1 year contract for 29.99 after a year they jack it to 39.99 if you dont renew a new contract or whatever.

I've been with Pacbell (SBC) DSL for around 5 years. I'm wondering if there's anything I can do to reduce my costs. I pay around $70/month, which includes DSL, basic phone service and email, all using the same number. I get nothing extra, although I may be entitled to web hosting, extra email accounts, I don't know (I get tons of spam). This amounts to about 10% of my budget, maybe more!!! Is there some way I can reduce that?

I haven't tested in a long time but I used to get around 1.0 - 1.5 mbps. I'm not too far from the CO (I think around 1/2 - 3/4 mile).

You should have called a week ago or a couple months ago. You could have gotten exact same DSL service for $26 a month. Dont despair though, DSL is still $30 even now for basic service. I dont know how much the phone line costs, but you know that you dont need an extra phone line for DSL right? Just 1 phone line that shares both voice and DSL at same time. I think the phone service costs around $20 a month if I'm not mistaken. Email is included with DSL. So you should be able to drop down to $50ish a month at least. Also, how much long distance are you paying? If you are paying more than around $6 to $10 a month in long distance, you should try the 3 cents a minute plan they have (had?). It costs $3 a month, then a flat 3 cents a minute, in state, out of state AND even local toll calls. Otherwise, I think they have a 5 cents a minute plan thats no charge per month.

To change DSL, follow my link and choose your state and look at the packages availible. Then call the guy and tell him you want to change to whatever package. Keep in mind you generally need to commit to a year of SBC DSL when doing this, but if you've had it for 5 years thats probably not a big deal for you. The $30 plan includes 1.5 mbit download, details are on the web page.

For long distance, goto SBC, choose residential and examine the plans there. Here's a link for long distance plans:
http://www.sbc.com/gen/general?pid=1080&cdvn=localize&prod-snip=res_long_distance
Only the top 6 plans apply if you are doing USA calls. The other plans are for blocks or international. Post a reply if you still need help or advice. And feel free to look at your bill and mention how much you pay for DSL right now, then we can tell you how much you can save just by switching DSL plans. And if you break it down by phone line, DSL, long distance I can tell you what you might be able to save. Or if you dont feel comfortable posting that info, try following my general advice.

Exactly. Keep in mind that dslreports website doesn't usually give that good of numbers. The only way to get official number is to call up the phone company, tell them a phone number and ask how far.

i am about that far (if not further) and i still get 1500/256 speeds. not always 100% consistant, but on the most part its ok. go onto dslreports.com and talk to the sbc tech support guys there. they are very helpful

i work for SBC, the new speeds have actully kept the department pretty busy, upgrading plans. If u are new 2 SBC DSl, you can get a free DSL modem right now, instant rebate or go with a home networking 2wire modem. The speed really does depend on the distance from the CO. If u live in the midwest PM abt getting it set up and i'll help ya out.

Ordered. I'm currently on MCI's 1.5m/768k package, but that 6.0m (hopefully) d/l speed sounds soo nice.

Thanks! Yes, I know I don't need an extra line for DSL. In fact I've never had more than one phone. I can't today, but I'll call tomorrow and see what I can do. I'm paying too much. My long distance is practically nothing. I have a really measely telecommute schtick, which requires me to fax my timesheet twice a month. That goes on my Sprint long distance bill, but it's very meagre. The long distance calling I do is on my cell phone, which is paid for by my employer. That's the only perk I have in that job. That job is not nearly paying my expenses. However, the DSL is actually instrumental to my job, so I may be able to get a tax deduction I figure. I'm going to call the IRS and ask about that.

I'm making so little money I think I may qualify for Lifeline Service, which might save me $15 off my basic $20/month phone part of my SBC bill.

Right now I'm paying about $70/month which includes ~$20 for basic phone, DSL and my email account.

BTW, its 44.99 not 44.95 LOL, someone got it a little wrong.
Also, as stated by billing/sales csr@dslreports.com, 44.99 is permanent, forever!
Those who are stuck on 6mbit/608 will be very pleased for many, many years to come!
2 thumbs up to SBC for a job well done. They have heard our cries many time about dropping their price of expert package and have finally caved in. They didn't do it to compete with cable but to please user who needed more speed and could not afford to pay more.

Ok. Yes, I'd definately call them and change to the $30 a month plan. If you follow my links you can see what it is. I'll paste the important specs here:
Name: Standard Plus Package Downstream: 384Kbps-1.5Mbps (up to roughtly 180K/sec) Upstream: 128Kbps (up to roughly 15K/sec) 1 Dynamic IP. (If you have been a very long term subscriber you may have a static IP. If you dont know the difference, odds are you dont need it and wont care, but you can ask them when you call what you have. Its also possible that if you DO have a static IP currently, they will let you keep it and get the lower cost.)
Cost: $29.95 a month
Note: You will probably have to commit to a year of service at that $30 rate. If you aren't planning to move it should be ok.

Do that (switch the DSL plan). From what you said you are currently paying somewhere around $50 per month for your DSL. Going to the $30 a month plan will save you money. Since you said you already have 1.5mbit service, you shouldn't notice anything change, and nothing should need to be changed on your computers either. I've changed previously to another service (one with the higher upload rate for another $10 a month) and there was no changes needed, they did it all on thier end. Lifeline: yeah you might want to think about that if you dont use long distance, it could save a lot. And you could also even get a prepaid phone card from like costco or something for when you did need to do long distance. I think a $20 phone card from costco gives you a rate close to 3 cents a minute from what I recall though I could be wrong.
So far, if you are indeed paying $50 for DSL, and goto lifeline which you say is $15 less. You are talking a total of $35 less per month.

BTW, you mentioned you are paying for email? What does that mean? Because SBC/pacbell includes like 5 or 10 email accounts for free in the monthly DSL payment, no extra charge.

Best thing to do is call them up, I got 23000 ft online from the CO, but it doesn't show that I am 1500 ft from a RT. I am getting 1300kbs now.

2 questions:

i'm on the sbc dsl $29 dollar plan. 128 up 1.5 down

I currently max out my connection at 167.4 KB/s when downloading off usenet.

Does that seem right? Would I gain if i upgraded?

When i first signed up, i was too far away from telco, but then they installed a remote station or something nearby that allowed me to get it. I also heard them say something about being on a paragain something.....

I think your speed is fairly decent. Use the speed tool at www.broadbandreports.com to see what speeds you're actually getting.

And remember, 1.5Mb doesn't mean you should be getting 1,500Kb per second...to get a rough gauge of what your actual speed would be, just divide 1,500 by 8 (or in your case, multiply that 164Kb/s by 8 and you'll see what you're getting...)

ok so i got this :
1267/132

You download speed:1267962 or 1267 kbps
a 154.7KB/s transfer rate.
Upload speed 132647 bps or 132 kbps
