You can upgrade the firmware if you need to, so I see no problem with it. From what I understand it was a firmware issue.

It seems like this drive is seriously misunderstood. Yes, there were failures. Are all of the drives going to fail.. I don't think so. The one I got worked perfect and passed the battery of tests I through at it without incident.

From my own experience, my first drive was junk and I had to flash the firmware. It drove me crazy while watching videos as it froze momentarily every couple of minutes. It has been working fine ever since after the flash though.

My second drive just came in yesterday and it already had the updated firmware on it. Looks good so far.

I performed a quick test and a long test via HDTune, then transferred ~150GB of data last night, then performed both of the long Seagate tests today, and finally, tested out my transferred data. I have 2 (CC1H). They're fine. Apparently the SDxx series have issues, and do NOT "upgrade" a CCxx firmware with a SDxx firmware - it will brick the drive. CC1H firmware reportedly has no significant problems other than people trying to load SD1A on them and bricking them - Seagates firmware update software could use just a smidgen of improvement.
