Finally got around to installing my drive. It was CC1H firmware and turned out to be DOA. Continuous clicking at bootup, computer would not boot with it installed. Called Dell and jumped through a few hoops to get a replacement shipped.

Me - "The drive is defective."
CS - "You should talk to tecnical support."
Me - "If you insist and that's what it takes to get a replacement."
TS - "Let me connect you with senior technical support."

And after explaining to senior technical support that I had a defective drive I now have a replacement on the way. I almost waited too late to install since they only give you 21 days from the order date. My first ever DOA hard drive.

Glad I skipped this one.

I even returned the 1 TB WD My Book after viewing all the complaints about failure either before warranty or just after. Hate to have 1 TB brick in a few months, so back it went.

you still have either 3 or 5 year warranty from Seagate.

I installed mine a few days after I received it and no problems. Second one that I purchased and both are OK. I do understand that they may crap out on me later but I am OK with that. Good back-up plan and I trust Seagate to make good on their warranty in case I do use it.

Seagate 1.5TB and 1 TB drives internal and external have reported issues so buyer beware. I'm sticking to WD drives until Seagate gets their act together.

The one I received is actually working great. I also had another external version of this drive which would start cranking for no apparent reason and transfers would halt. My linux box stopped mounting it too after a while.

Got my replacement drive today and it was firmware CC1H made in Thailand and seems to be working fine. I'm moving some large files to that drive even as we speak as a test so we'll see. The DOA drive I had gotten was the same firmware and made in Thailand as well, so where it was made may or may not be a factor. Hopefully my new drive will last a while. GLTA who bought one or more. I had just called Dell yesterday afternoon, so I would say that's pretty excellent customer service even if I do have to pay the shipping charges to return it, but that seems to be the case everywhere these days.

FTR I got 2 of these, both CC1H, and they are both working great. Just thought I'd share that since ppl are posting their defective units and it's getting to seem like the majority of these are DOA. And PLEASE mark this dead! (I realize the irony in that this message is bumping the thread)

I got two drives, both CCH1 firmware. One was from Newegg's sale during 15% off Paypal, one from this sale. Both work great with no issues.

I have a Seagate 1.5Tb ST31500341AS that is about a month old. It has the CC1H firmware on it.

The problem just started yesterday where the drive shows up in the BIOS and Device Manager but shows 0 bytes as capacity. The drive does not show up in My Computer however. I contacted Seagate and they said it isn't a firmware issue and to send the drive in for replacement. BUT, I have thousands of pictures on there that I just moved over from another hard drive that I no longer have and this broken drive is the only place I have the pictures right now. (I know I should have backed them up right away but I didn't think the drive was going to fail after a month).

I just got off the phone with i365 (Seagate's Data Recovery Company) and found out that they charge $1,700 for Economy recovery or $2,200 for Priority recovery. I laughed at the guy and told him I will never ever buy another Seagate product again. Worst purchase I have ever made.

So, if anyone can please help me out with some suggestions on what I should do and if it's even possible for me to recover the files myself please let me know!

Thanks to anyone in advance for taking the time to respond!

(1) Post your problem in one of the hardware forums here on Anandtech. You should get some good recommendations (software based recovery tools, etc.).

(2?) Buy another, same make and model, swap the main circuit board. You might get lucky. I've done this before, but it was a long time ago, with a much smaller capacity drive. Not sure if this is good advice nowadays.

There used to be a german software by the name of 'tiramisu' that was great at extracting data from bad hard drives. Unfortunately it cost a lot.

I found a link for it. I'm not sure if this requires a license or not.

First, try flashing the firmware. If that doesn't work, swap out the PCB board with another drive that does work.

Stop downloading porn.

How dare you suggest such a thing. That is just un-American!

No doubt. Because other drives from other companies never fail. And, of course, when they do, data recovery is always free.
