I feel bad I bash Seabait so much, but this drive has 24% 1egg reviews on Newegg. Sure, Newegg reviewers are fools....but most know what a DOA drive is.

The Sammy is better reviewed, and one of the fastest spindle drives made.

You pd more, but got a better product IMO.

i really wish i could trust seagate 1tb drives. they have been giving these away for 30$+ for years now. Its amazing but I still go with WD since they are half the price to RMA for me IF something goes wrong (I rma seagate and wd at same time seagate got shipped back with some bs excuse they could not rma and wd sent me new drive so i may be a little bias ((seagate told me in email to send it in and rma but when it got there they refused to so wasted 2x money on drive and shipping)))))))

Mine failed from Amazon in one week, started blue screening windows Vista, then had issues on bootup, never gave a SMART error, but would not pass Seatools diagnostic and just reported an error code and told me to contact warranty department. Seagate replaced it quickly but I was out another $5 to ship back to Seagate. Amazon packing was horrible, the drive was just loose in a larger box. Seagate sent back the refurb drive with 3 inch dense foam all the way around.

One of the rare times I didn't check newegg reviews before purchasing. The drive has a terrible reputation. The replacement from Seagate is fine, but the hassle ruins the deal.

I got my Amazon drive. It was at the bottom of the box with those air pillows on top of it. It would have been awesome had the box been shipped upsdie down the entire trip. I dropped it into a hot swap tray, plugged it in and lsitened to it click. Amazon does not know how to ship drives.

I wonder how many drives failed from bad packaging vs. being a bad drive. Newegg had a bout of really poor packaging of HD for a while. For $45, I will play their silly game and probably eventually get a refurb. Drive will be used for Tier 3 storage in a RAID5 with 4 drives and a hot spare. Tertiary backup and temp file location, so it's all good.

It's bad when brand new drives fail so soon and they send you a refurb unit. I almost ordered this drive because of the price but decided not to. I think I'll stay away from Seagate for a while longer.

I was complaining about the bad packaging in the Samsung 1TB thread. You can't hardly rely on any etailer these days to pack the new big HDs like they should be.

That seems fitting, it now matches the condition of most of the drives they shipped. The Seagate is bad news, pay more and get anything else.
