And I just read not long ago Seagate claiming the drive shortage for high prices would last another year. Im still holding out and burning BLU-RAY media for a while.

650gig of blu-ray media runs about $20.00

This is a really good deal for $110. I've got a few of these drives in addition to a pair of 3TB Cuda XT's and they have been very reliable. Just make sure you order one at a time from Newegg, their stoner shipping department will wrap two drives together without proper padding.

I don't think bluray is a compelling alternative to hard storage until you can fit a few hundred GB on a single disc, especially since most of my 1080P BR MKVs are 20-25GB each, even more if I include extra content.

How does this drive compare to the Hitachi 5K3000 5400RPM 2TB drives that Newegg has for $130?

Is the Seagate "Advanced Format"? The Hitachi is NOT.

I'm still a bit "iffy" about buying AF drives. I prefer the non-AF drives.

yeah I grabbed 2 of them one from new egg and one from amazon. FOR me the amazon is the better deal. no tax and a 5% discount with my chase card. Just under 105 is a good price. too bad the limit is one.

I am backing up my eyeTv recordings as I type on the first one. so far it has worked fine I have loaded about 1.3 tb of tv shows with out any problems.

they raised the price back up some time today. I ordered mine on monday.. It was working this morning around 6 am. Amazon does this some of the time. As an aside I loaded 1.6tb of tv recordings on the first one. the second one will come on weds.

I'm thinking the manufacturers probably are not in a hurry to let prices drop back down to pre flood levels any time soon even after the supply line gets full again. Sure the prces will get lower but they have a chance to control profit levels once more and I got a feeling they don't want that to get too thin like before if they can avoid it. No proof. Just a feeling I have. So much corporate greed these days. Know what I mean? Hopefully I'm wrong.

Skott - unfortunately you are probably right. Since Western Digital bought Hitachi, and Seagate bought Samsung, there are now only two major players in the hard drive industry. This means less competition.
