the seagate 7200.10 is the better performer. Longer warranty. Also the WD is not retail but OEM, maybe price match to fry's?

Not that much.
Just a data cable, and a power cable.
Of course, your system has to have a SATA controller to use SATA drives.

If it is a wide ribbon cable, then that is IDE=PATA.
If it is a thin cable, then that is SATA.

If you want more info, then use google or something. :gift:

it has been my experience that the 7200.10 drives from Seagate are pretty quiet and cool...the new WD drives may be just a tad quieter though. The 5 year seagate warranty makes it nice though.

This is a good deal, especially considering it's a retail package so you'd get the full 5 year warranty. I'm planning on heading over on Sunday to fetch one or two.

Not too long ago I put together a large raid system in a case with a very limited power supply. I ended up using 500GB WD drives because they used noticeably less power than the 500GB Seagate drives. I can't say whether they are quieter, but at least less power consumption generally means cooler operation.

I was thinking about the WD as well, but I don't believe that's a retail drive, so you probably only get the OEM (short) warranty. The site doesn't provide any info on the warranty on the WD, but for the seagate we know it's a retail boxed drive so you get 5 years.

Anyone have further info on the WD? (retail/oem, warranty?)

WD OEM = 3 years
WD Retail = 1 year
WD Raptors = 5 Years

My experience with purchasing retail Seagate drives is that you often get newer drives than the actual model number on the box says. When I purchased my 400GB Seagate from Best Buy last year the model number on the box indicated it was a 7200.9 but sticker on the drive said it was a 7200.10. I wouldn't be surprised if this ended up being the case with these drives. Regardless, I think I am going to pick one up on Sunday.

Saves about $13 for me after tax...not sure if BB deserves my business...altho I guess this IS a loss leader

Although, that is a OEM drive... if you need the power cable, and a SATA cable, and better pacakge protection, then get it from BB, or better yet, PM @ CC.
Nope it is retail

I'm not a big fan of BB, but this is a decent deal.
It's tempting, but my next system build isn't scheduled until Nov/Dec (RetailEdge program), so i'm going to hold out on a hard drive & hope the prices will drop even further by then.

I just bought the 500gb SATA. I went to Circuit City, they had 5 or so on the shelf, and had them price match to the $99.99 price advertised in the Best Buy circular. I also got 10% of the difference, so $95 or so, <$100 out the door.
