Dead Space is now out on Steam. Do you think its good? I'm usually not a single player gamer so its hard for me to justify a 50 dollar non multiplayer game. Thoughts?

I played it and loved it. It's in my top 5. Very immersive. Hope you have a PC that can handle it. It scales pretty well, but dayum does it look good on a good system

Played it on console, reported control issues on the PC (retains the sluggish turning of console version) which I'm not sure if it's fixed yet (ah heck off if you tell me to use a controller). Gave me the eybee gybees at first but it became repetitive after about 1/4 into the game. Uses standard linear level progression through narrow corridors with occasional open areas with only one door you can go through to progress to the next area. Despite claims that the weapons are "mining equipment" they are all standard sci fi weaponry. Console AI just bumb rushes you unless the NPC uses ranged attacks. After a short time you can anticipate when the game will spawn monsters on you.

All that said, it does have "OH CRAP OH CRAP OH CRAP" and "wow" moments, but it's getting to them after you get used to the atmosphere and creepy monsters that becomes a chore. I say rent it for console if you can, can't recommend paying over $10 for it.

Also, not having a shitty computer helps with mouse lag

Loved it on the pc.
So much so, i checked out the animated comic book and movie once i was done with the game.
I thought the story was good.

As said above, disable v-sync in the game menu, then if you want it on, force it on in your video drivers, and that will eliminate the mouse lag.

I've played it on the PS3 and on my PC, and I definitely like the PC better. The controls are a little wonky, but not to hard to get used to. Also the almost complete lack of load times totally makes up for it IMo.

One thing to note: be sure to turn off Vsync in this game. For some reason it causes a huge mouse lag (which is not present at all with Vsync off). It would be nice if they addressed the issue with a patch, but I really haven't seen much tearing with it off. Also, if you crank your mouse senstivity in windows (or if you have a mouse that can adjust senstivity on the fly), then the viewpoint controls are really responsive.

The only thing I will say is that I think the lighting effects are a little worse on my PC then they were on the PS3. Perhap's it is because I am only sitting a few feet from my computer monitor, but it seems like they would have ported over better.

All in all, if you don't own a PS3, Dead Space is totally worth picking up for the PC.

Very repetitive. Little in the way of story, and tries way too hard to get silly shock scares. Like a bad horror movie really.

Loved it on PC! I hardly noticed that it was 3rd person, I had to think about it for a minute when I read the above comment. Although it's 3rd person, the camera is very close to the character, so there's not much of a "detached" 3rd person feel.

Has there been a patch that allows you to bind the arrow keys? Im not a WASD player and not being able to rebind keys on a PC game is kinda lame.

I'm enjoying it right now. It's pretty standard shooter fare. Resident Evil 4's controls shoehorned into Doom 3's plot and graphic design with the dismemberment system from Kingpin brought along for the ride.

It's good, nothing particularly new, but you're not here for new right?

Does Dead Space have SecurROM? Ever since I installed it my computer has been MESSED UP. I went from getting 35fps in Left 4 Dead to 8 FPS and the only thing that has changed on my install is me installing Dead Space. On my OS X partition (I game on a Macbook Pro) I went from 40FPS in WoW to 12FPS. Same thing, only thing that has changed within the last two days is installing Dead Space.) I doubt it could do anything to the hardware cross platform but ya never know...

(I installed a non-Steam version)

Game crashed until I figured out that I had to unplug my Microsoft Sidewinder pad. I wasn't using it, just made me crash.

As for the game, it is ok. It could have been a great horror game (the environments are fantastic), but decided to be an average shooter instead.

Welcome to 2009... where Macs use Intel Architecture and have Dedicated GPUs and can run two OSes. Woa. Now lets get back to the Dead Space discussion.
