Ok, I have known about Dead Space for a while now, But I figured it was time to pick it up since it is $8 shipped on Newegg.

So how is this game ? Survival Horror ? I have watched some reviews, but getting mixed opinions.

Anyone know about the game ? How it plays ? Length ?

Haven't installed it yet though.

Survival horror is a good description of it. The game is played in a 3rd person view set in a large ship in space. Reminds me of Resident Evil in a sci-fi setting.

I've not finished it yet but it seems pretty long.

It can be played with the KB+M, but there was some terrible mouse lag. I think there's a solution/fix for that, but I think the 360 controller works better.

Great game for $8. That's a hot deal!

I figure you say "install it" because it is a good game ?

But yea, when I buy games, I usually buy 3 at a time. Then finish them one after another. Well picked this one up, and deciding which one to play first.

Choices are :

Painkiller Resurrection / Played the first couple. Know what to expect.
Bioshock 2 / Played the first one, "basically" know what to expect.

for me, it was the best game in a long time when i played it. A mix between resident evil and alien.

Its decent...but I will say that the game mechanics get stale real quick (like moving objects and all that) and the game also became very repetitive early on...just go to point A...kill aliens...go to point B...kill aliens...accomplish task...kill aliens...next level...repeat...

Got it during the Steam sale but haven't been able to play it. I've tried a couple times but the nausea always defeats me within a few minutes. The FOV is straight up dreadful.

I appreciate that the game is supposed to feel claustrophobic, but it feels more like I'm walking around looking through binoculars and my brain freaks out. Had the same exact issue in Bioshock until I redid some keybinds that would correct the FOV. (Incidentally if somebody has a way to increase the FOV I'd love to hear it; throwing up isn't my idea of a fun time.) I'm guessing if you play on a TV and can sit further back it would be much less of an issue.

Haven't played long enough to comment on the input-lag issue (although I can confirm it was RIDICULOUSLY horrible with in-game vsync enabled).

My personal verdict so far is "Waste of Money", but you've already bought it so you might as well give it a shot. Good luck!

It was pretty good. Essentially resident evil 4 in space.

It's main problem was the way mouse sensitivity was tied to framerate. Made mouse controls painful.

It's the real spiritual successor to system shock 2 imo (although not quite as good). Make sure you fix the game before playing it. I felt like I was some sort of retard trying to control my guy before fixing the mouse.

It was quite a decent game, I thought. However, the PC implementation was FUCKED.

Mouse/KB input is run through an analog controller emulator, which is just inexcusable.

Good game, but the PC port suffers from your typical lack of effort in properly porting it from the consoles. Controller input lag ranges from mildly annoying but workable to rage inducing and unplayable even with vsync turned off. Depends on your tolerance and machine.

You want VSync on the higher the frames go the worse the mouse will screw up in that game.

I played deadspace and it was very good. The story is great and so is the gameplay. (By the way watch deadspace anime BEFORE you play the game. It's available online for free if you know where to look. The anime really helps get into the story.

My only problem with deadspace was that it's just too damn scary and downright horrific. I really struggled with myself pressing on and on, but by the time I beat about 25 percent of this game it finally got to me. I just couldn't take it anymore, because every time I would play the game I would constantly turn around in my chair and check if anyone or anything was sneaking up on me... I got all paranoid.. So I stopped.

But I am planning to reinstall Deadspace at soem point and beat it to the end. I am not happy about the idea of Deadspace 2 because I haven't even beaten the 1st one. HEY GUYS, WAIT FOR ME!!!

I wouldn't say that the controls in the PC version are bad. Who cares if the input is ran through analog controller?! It WORKS! The controls DO feel stiff at 1st but you get used to it very fast, and the reason for such stiff controls is for the most part because it was intended this way to immerse you in the game and make you feel how heavy the suit that the main character is wearing is - not because the controls are broken or anything like that.

Also, the PC version is ages beyond the Xbox version when it comes to graphics. I own an Xbox360 and a PC but whenever a game is available on both platforms I always play it on a PC, because the Xbox360 is more for the exclusives such as Soul Calibur, SSFIV, Forza 3, Bayonetta etc.... You simply cant get those on a PC.

No more playing those scary games late at night. I learned my lesson from playing Resident Evil on the playstation back in the late 90's. I used to play in the same bedroom where me and my wife slept and I was still chicken. Took it back and bought Tiger Woods golf back then.

I play most of the scary stuff during the day now. L4d1-2,Deadspace,Bioschock 1-2. I get paranoid as you do If I play those at night. Heck and I'm 38 lol

Great game.

FYI: even the devs recommend using a gamepad and NOT kb/m. I tried it both ways and while it was playable with kb/m, I found the controller better. EXCEPT for the asteroid shooting part where I couldn't beat it without using the mouse. Controller wasn't fast enough.

When I got Dead Space for PC, like everyone else, I noticed the horrible keyboard/mouse input lag. If you turn off vsync, it improves drastically, but then the tearing is horrible:

Protip: If you plan on playing Dead Space for PC, use a utility called D3DOverrider that comes with Rivatuner. All you have to do is run it in the background, and it forces Vsync with triple-buffering for DirectX games.

That's all. Problem gone. Too bad many of you who already played it didn't know about this.

At one point I tried D3DOverrider and I couldn't tell a difference. Do you have to have Vsync forced off in your video driver control panel?

Asshole devs... They sold it for PC, they'd better provide proper mouse/kb support.

Hmm... I never had anything changed in my driver control panel. Just make sure the in-game vsync setting is turned off first, then turn on D3DOverrider and restart the game.

Maybe you really do need a beefy computer, because I saw someone in this thread who claims there is still lag even when you run the game vanilla without Vsync. But when I use D3DOverrider it works like a charm. *shrug*

I loved it. It´s always creepy, the game mechanics are good (as someone said, there is some mouse lag, but it wasn't a huge problem for me), and there are some good puzzles in it. The parts out in space and in zero-G are excellent as well.

Great game, played with an XBox 360 controller. Turn vsync off as others have mentioned, the input lag is atrocious with it on.

I got I think about 80% of the way through it. Far enough to learn most of how the plot plays out. Fun stuff, I always enjoy sci-fi horror... if you thought the movie Event Horizon was a cool premise then you'll like this.

I would suggest not watching that anime someone mentioned earlier, I believe it gives away the cause of all the shenanigans which during the first parts of the game you're not supposed to know about. Either way though, definitely play this game if you like the scarier Resident Evil games. RE5 was NOT scary so I don't count that one.
