unless you need color, laser printers are the way to go. Toner is way cheaper than ink in the long run.

Massachusetts.. 5% sales tax. If I were closer to NH I'd shop there - no sales tax at all!

Here's a trick for you to try if you're a Wally-World regular.... Walmart will pm any deal you find, just with a few conditions: must be within fifty miles of the store you're pm'ing, and must bring a copy of the ad. Extra coupons, mail-in rebates, don't matter, they'll match anyone's deal, as long as the final price is shown. Here's how I pm'd a deal on a Linksys hub for $79 and saved myself an extra twenty-mile drive (and a wait on a mail-in rebate): I just printed out the sales ad from BestBuy, the final price at checkout, and the location of the store (the item has to be in stock). Next, printed a copy of the location of the B&M Best Buy and distance between BB and WM from Mapquest, and went to WM. At first they gave me a minute or two of the old run-around in electronics (WM price was $129), but after consulting a manager they made good on the deal, no problem. After the first success, I've been a WalMart pm'ing dog, although the LinkSys was the best deal so far. As long as there's a Staples or OM in your area (within 50miles) and you can show a final price (the check out price at their website will do fine), you're in.

why not pricematch the Walmart price at Staples or OM, *then* apply the $50 rebate. Then the printer would only be $50!

I think that I'm officially about to thread crap *grabs newspaper and sits down on thread*

I just want my fellow Anandtechers here to beware that the cost of a new toner for this lexmark is going to KILL you after you print like TWICE or some crap! I've scoured the internet and have yet to find where I found the cost/page comparison between these two printers and the HP1200 and the Samsung ML1210. The point is, the comparison considered a user that was going to use it over a long period of time and use like 2-4 toner cartridges in the life of the printer. After all those cartridges, the lexmark had use like 12 and the Brother 2. I might also mention that the lexmark's cost CONSIDERABLY more!

Staples Lexmark E-210
Staples 2000 page count $90 toner cartridge for the Lexmark E-210

Amazon feedback on Lexmark E-210

Staples Brother HL-1440
Staples 20,000 page count $150 drum for the Brother HL-1440

Amazon feedback on Brother HL-1440
Brother HL-1440

I rekon the Lemark is a Hot dealio @ this price...but only if U R gonna throw it away like any other INKjet printer. If U R plannin' on keeping the thing...get the Brother (it comes w/ a parallel and USB cable)

*gets off thread*

I hope that this was more helpful than it was actual thread crap!!!

God Bless

Tanner

carmann, the previous poster linked to toner refill cartridges on ebay. I would like to know if anyone has used toner refill cartridges before, and how well they do or don't work.

I would suggest getting your facts straight Tanner. You only list the drum unit for the brother. You also need the toner which at staples is $75 for 6000 pages.

For 20000 pages the lexmark would be 10 * $90 = $900 + $70 printer = $970
the bother would be $150 + 3.33 * $75 = $400 + $250 = $750

Not nearly the big difference you made it look like.

By the way, I found a place that sells kits to refill the lexmark cartridge for about $30.

I really want one of these but I am concerned about the Memory!!! I have never owned a laser printer, so if you know, please elaborate. The Lexmark website says thie printer (E210) comes with 4 mb memory. I have also read that this is not expandable. Staples says that it comes with 2 mb, and is not expandable. The Samsung (which I believe that this is a rebadge of?) supposedly comes with 8 mb and is expandable. Why all of the discrepancies? The Brother is supposedly expandable to 32 mb. What is the ideal amount of memory for a laser printer?

As Tanner (what up dood!!) pointed out, at $70 I would be willing to donate this printer to charity before paying for a new print cartridge that costs the same as the printer!! It would be cheaper to get a new printer every 6 or so months. If I invested in memory, I would most likely keep the original (or swap out memory). Any thoughts would be tremendously appreciated!!!! I am going up to Staples now to play with these for a bit.

Soo tempting!
But right now I have 3 printers(2 new in box) and 3 scanners(2 new in box).
I'm running out of room.

NotAClue,

I am with you!!! I have so much crap now it is amazing. That is why I am so slow to jump on this. I have a Lexmark A3000 I got back in November from Staples for ~90.00, it is crap!!! I hesitate with other Lexmark products, but a laser printer for ~70.00 is to much for me to control myself!!!

What about that new 115% PM...wasn't that at officeMax.....couldn't you PM Staples' price at OM and get another 15%? I also have way too much equipment to consider this, but I hope you all enjoy it.

Well I'm still torn between cancelling my Brother 1440 (paid $209 shipped) and this, but I think I'm going to keep the Brother. Cnet gave the Brother pretty high ratings and it's upgradable to 34 megs of memory and it does 1200dpi. Since I plan on using this to print out B&W photo's... I think the Brother may do the job better. Toner is cheapier, but the printer is costing me 3x as much. For text and general home printing I don't think you can go wrong with this Lexmark deal.

<< The replacement cartridge is only $79.77 direct from Lexmark so I don't see whyOM is asking $10 more for the same thing.

You should be able to find as good or better looking around

Lexmark E210 supplies link

Lowest price I found on mysimon (or was it dealtime??) was $69.00. but I didn't check shipping.

Right on the nose. They (CNET-Computer Shopper) said the Lexmark text output was great but that photographs had banding and were light or something. I didn't know the brother did 1200.

NM - The Lexmark site indicates that the printer is supported by WinXP. Might have been an older descriprtion carried on the O.D. site.
Might be a problem that is eventually addressed with a new driver set, but WinXp is not currently supported.

Supported Operating Systems:</B>
* Red Hat Linux 6.x, 7.0 or later
* Windows 98, 2nd Edition
* Windows Me
* Windows 2000 Sever
* Windows NT 4.00
* Windows 2000 Professional
* Windows 95 4.00.950 or later
* Windows 2000 Advanced Server
* Windows NT 4.00 Server

Just got mine from OM.. what a great store! I've never ordered from there before but 1-day free shipping is very nice.

XP is supported.. there are drivers on Lexmark's site and Windows Update so it's WHQL. I haven't installed it yet, I'm still at work.

Also, everyone knows you don't have to refill laser printers! You just take the toner cartridge out, shake it around and put it back in.

I just got this for $125 from my B&M Staples (they had 4 of em left)... is there any way to price match this using Amex Blue to the Wal-Mart Price?

Otherwise it would seem the best bet would be to get your local staples to PM with Walmart...
