Thanks marill999! I picked one up today--oddly enough, I actually needed a printer, and this deal couldn't have had better timing for me. I've had an earler model Lexmark laser printer at work for a couple of years and have been pleased with it, btw.

This may be relevant for those that get "out of stock" messages online: I was at Staples yesterday for something else and thought I'd check out the E-210. A couple of them were boxed and on the lower shelf. None were out for display, and there was nothing to indicate the price. Several hours later--and after the B&M store was closed--I decided to order one. What do I get online? "OUT OF STOCK!" This morning I drove the three long miles back to Staples B&M and both boxed printers were still right there. One box fit my shopping cart perfectly.

Obviously, the "out of stock" message didn't reflect the reality of the matter. If I hadn't already seen the printers there I would have taken the message at face value. In the future, where a store is pretty close, I plan to check in person even though online may say none are there.

Mine came today.

UGH! The stupid driver software... printing email, you can't specify only one page to print!
I get these 5 page emails of my orders, only one page of which is the packing list/shipping label.
Thats the reason I GOT this thing, is for printing out all my packing lists for orders I get, and now I can't use it!

crap.

Im using Outlook. It just lets me choose odd or even.
Found a workaround though, if I choose Word as my editor, then click reply to open the email, THEN I can choose pages.
But that has its drawbacks, obviously

Just ordered mine. NEXT DAY DELIVERY FOR FREE!!! Pretty sweet deal except I got charged 9.99 in tax. Another plus is the megatoners.com website that has my ink jet carts for 1.50 each!! I guess I can hold onto my ink jet after all

I got the printer from OM yesterday.. Works great.. Reports 4MB of ram.. Works fine under WinXP and WinME.. Good experience after a very bad one with the drivers for the Minolta 1100L from the Costco deal.. The Minolta went back to Costco..

A stupid question though.. When attaching the plastic piece for the output paper support.. If I attach it in the same direction as shown in the manual, then it is very loose and can fall off easily.. However, turning it around then it is tight in place.. So now I have it attached with the round hole on the right hand side instead of the left side as shown in the manual.. Did anyone else notice that or am I missing something here??

For those who ordered from OfficeMax, did the email that you received state that the printer was on backorder? I ordered it last night and throughout the whole process the web site stated that it was in stock, but after you complate the order, it states that it is backed ordered

A note on Out of Stock messages....

Hello all,

I tried to use an online coupon @ my local B&M OMax a couple of weeks back - the mgr said no go. Online & B&M are separate entities he explained. Online orders are shipped out of a central warehouse (in my case, south florida) all the way to my house in orlando. This would explain why someone was able to find printers in stock at the B&M after receiving an OOS message online.

for a chuckle...
I just ordered a cdrw, ram, & paperclips (bump over $150), used a $30 coupon, .....blah, blah...

anyhow, they sent the cdrw & ram in one box (~ 10x10x14) and the paperclips in a separate box - same size!!!!

I believe Office Depot ships from their local stores.

I hope this adds something to the conversation.

I was wondering if anyone has tried to run this printer shared over a home network, either connected to one computer or
through a router/print server. Thanks!

I was going to look into buying one, but I emailed Lexmark and found out it is HOST BASED. It wasn't clear, at least to me, that this unit wasn't a "normal" printer. This message is meant to be informative, not a thread crap.

For those of you that don't know, host-based printers, well, kinda suck. Like Winmodems - all the work is done by the computer. Which means that if, for some reason, Lexmark decides not to support Windows2005, you're SOL, and its time to chuck the printer. It also means that if the driver is buggy, you can't just use an alternative.

It also means that it can't be a standalone network printer. It can't work with a Mac (not supported), although it'll work with one, old flavor of Linux (if that's important to you). Forget anything really weird like FreeBSD.

The Brother 1440, OTOH, is PCL4 compatible. Which means that anything that can print to an HP LaserJet (which is just about anything under the sun) will work with it today, tomorrow, even really old crap from yesteryear. It'll work with your Mac, your PDA, anything. I think that this a better way to go.

Other ramifications of host-based printers:

* Printing slows down your computer (because it needs a lot of CPU). This is not a huge issue, since most folks don't play games and print at the same time, for instance. And, on the other hand...

* Update your CPU, and your print speed goes up.

* The printer only needs enough memory to store the dots for the page, so 4 megs is just fine.

* On the other hand, make sure you have plenty of memory on your computer. Folks with 128 MB running XP may have issues.

This is a great deal if you want good output for really cheap, short term. But you might be buying another printer in a year or two. For me, printers should outlast computers, operating systems, etc. This one won't.

I got mine in the mail yesterday, it works great. Used USB to connect in WinXP, which automatically installed the drivers without the installation CD. The printer is really fast, the quality is great... it blows the speed of my parents' old HP 5L out of the water (which it should, considering that they've had the 5L since the mid-90s). It also came with 4MB of RAM... one thing that I like is it has a power switch on it. I don't print an awful lot, so this is great for me. It goes through a brief warm up after I turn it back on, probably under 1 minute. Did anyone mention it has a cooling fan? That's probably my favorite part, hahah -- the OC'er inside me coming to the surface.

On another subject, it appears that Staples has removed the e210 from their website, they probably took a loss on this thing. Actually, they probably took a hit with shipping too, considering I got the erasers I ordered to put me over $150 in a separate box about 5000% larger than the erasers. They must not have any small boxes, hahah.

I'm not sure how officemax determines stock, there is definitely something odd there.

I ordered one for my parents in Florida at about 11:15 the other day, they got it the next day via UPS.
I ordered one for myself in Maryland about 10 minutes later - it said "sorry, you're outside of our 1 day delivery area" and then went on to say that it was "CBO" (currently backordered) for me... and I'm pretty sure I didn't just randomly buy the very last one for my parents, esp. since someone else had mentioned the backordered thing in this thread...

So my best guess is that their stock is based on some sort of regional warehouse system...
