Any reason to get this drive over some other (possibly inferior) drive...Just checking around Hot Deals and there are others, just wondering if this was "better."

I think the photo look exactly like the Plextor one.
The button size, shape, placement and even the back look almost identical.

if this is indeed a plextor, then i'm extremely tempted to buy it. only thing holding me back is that there is no 8X DVD media

Well, there obviously will be soon enough, until then, just use 4X, I mean, what else would you use anyway?

Seriously though, I agree that it's not logical to buy an 8x right now without the media, however, we all know the 8x media will be out soon enough, so why not put out the extra dollars for an 8x now and not have to worry about getting one say 6 months from now if you bought a 4x...

anyway, i think i'm getting this, i have a plextor cd-rw which i love, so this will just add to the family.

I am burning a TDK 4x at 8x now using the Plextor firmware. It is easy to change the TDK to a Plex firmware, just have to change two lines using Notepad.

I did it, works perfectly.

Yeah.. Good luck finding a $30 off $150 coupon that isn't a one time use coupon.

Looks like a nice drive. As always, it's nice to have a new toy. But I remember getting burned for being an early adopter on some mobo's etc. Plextor should be problem free. However, pricewise, these will drop soon like everything else. Wonder what they will be in 8-12 weeks from now? Say around March or so. They tempt us with 4x, then dual format, now 8x & dual format. It just keeps getting better.what's next? Blue laser, multilayer density, on & on. How about using a competitor's $30 off $150?? Good luck to all.:sun:

The prices on these are dropping faster as the dual-layer burners get ready to hit the market after the 1st of the year. I'll wait to see how much they go for before taking the plunge. My Pioneer 105 is serving me fine right now.

I had the 708A for a couple of months... it burned to the Riteks at 8x flawlessly.
