TDK IndiDVD AID+840 8x DVD±R/±RW drive

It is 8x -r and 8x +r? Because the specs from tdks site shows it as 8x+r and 4x -r

Yes, you are correct. It only does 4X on - media. it does 8X on +. Plextor uses software technology to achieve the 8X result. It isnt truly a 8X drive.

Dec 3 Firmware: ftp://www.tdk.com/software/DVDRW840G_103.exe

Download Firmware 1.03 to Desktop
Doulbe click on DVDRW840G_103.exe
Cick on OK. and choose the TDK DVDRW840G drive.
Click Update to start the flashing process.
If asked, let the computer reboot or left click Exit on the flasher program when the flasher program is completed.

Is there a reason why the website still shows the drive at 250, with no instant rebate and no mail-in rebate? When is the website going to be updated?
It's updated now and I just ordered. I also ordered just after midnight just to make sure that I got the drive, but since I was able to order now, I am going to cancel my original order. It's going to be $129.94 AR and coupon + tax.

Just ordered on line as well with a $30 off code.

Off topic, what is the best DVD ripping/copy software and how much should I pay for it? Or is the included software good enough for coping movies (simply for back-up purposes)?

So can you just then get the 4x burner as use the firmware to make it the 8x (if so, then why buy the 8x one?)

I got one today in-store. The Bellevue, WA store had three (two after I bought mine). No problem at all using the coupon.

Also, this deal is available online, with a different 30-off-150 coupon code.

Osiris, yes certain 4X media will burn at 8X. Plextor uses some technology to allow this to do that. That is the general question on whether this drive is worth getting since it is not a true 8X. If 8X is the top speed that a DVD can be burnt at then I am satisifed with getting this. If you are looking for a 4X then CC has the Lite-on 4X for $69.99 AR 451S and 411S. two $30 rebates MIR

Good to know, so the lite-on at CC for 69.99 AR is really gonna be a 4x no matter what. I think I am gonna go with this drive. Any last cavaets??? Any hopes for a 8x -r burning out of this drive?

I would imagine it is a decent drive. Sony is getting out of the business for DVD Burners and rumor has it that they are going to put their name on Lite-on as their rebadge.

I don't use DVD-X-Copy I use DVD2SVCD-Cinema Craft Encoder) and Pinnacle Instant Copy.

The new Firmware for the Lite-on reolves the media compatability issues. Just make sure if you get the Lite-on that the serial number has an 8 as the 6th digit. That has the new Chipset that Liteon is using. It is actually the 451S even though the box says 411S. If it doesnt have the 8 as the 6th digit you are getting the inferior chipset.
As far as the TDK/Plextor goes I have been reading that it can burn a DVD in about 8 min at full burn speed.

I would say TDK. If you don't like it you can still sell it used for more then you paid for it

The Plextor/TDK blows Lite-on away in all reviews. If speed is not a concern then Lite-on.

If you want the Lite-on check their website to see if the local store near you has it in stock before wasting a drive over in traffic
