Why would Plextor put out firmware and not test it when it is their arse if something goes wrong

Got mine today and flashed the firmware to the Plextor 1.04. Running smooth. I'm using mine as an external USB/Firewire drive. I bought a Black Coolmax aluminum external enclosure at Newegg and boy does this combo look sweet. Not that I was trying to match or anything.

For those of you who have flashed this drive, is it supposed to read as a Plextor drive after flashing it or as a TDK? Mine shows as being the TDK drive, but shows the firmware as being 1.04 now. Is this correct? If so, we are actually changing something so we can run the Plextor firmware with our TDK drive. We aren't actually flashing our drives to a Plextor.

BTW.. Just curious.. How does this TDK (Plextor) match up against the Sony DRU-530A? I think I read somewhere that the Sony has a 8mb buffer. I don't know how much that means with an optical drive. Does it make a difference? Does anyone know who makes the Sony 530A drive? NEC?
