That's what I didn't like about the american version. They left out lot of very importatnt parts from the original.
In the original, they highlight the fact that the cord was unplugged but the TV still came on by itself.
The special effects on the American version gave you more chills but I wish they didn't mutillate the plot so much.
What happened to explaining how bunch of teenagers erased the last part of the tape as a joke?
And not to mention how the girl managed to get inside the videotape with her powers.
I don't remember the erasing part or how the girl got in the video anywhere in the japanese version.

Supposedly the movie opens with bunch of teenagers dead after watching the tape. The Women comes in to investigate the death.
The teenagers appearantly died after watching the tape but at the end of the tape there was a direction on how to save themselves from dying.
However, theses teenagers took the tape and recorded over the end as a joke.
The little girl had psychic powers and that was one of the reason how she was able to get herself in the tape even after her death, something completely missing in the American makeover.
