(Dead) Tivo almost FAR at Radio Shack B&M only

From FW. Radio Shack has the tivo series 2 for $50. Get a year of service for $130. There is a $170MIR here at Tivo.. Not online. My RS had only 1 Tivo, and I got it!!! My first Tivo.

Nice congrats! I have an 80-hour Tivo S2 and love it. You can upgrade them pretty easily using instructions online, or using software and kits:

Is it possible to run the Tivo as a plain DVR after the subscription runs out? For $10 AR that's a pretty cheap DVR.

you can still use it as a DVR... but you lose all the other good features that make it worth it... such as the internet scheduling capabilities (I can schedule programming when I'm away from home... such as traveling for work) and I can schedule shows from work... and the downloading of the tv schedules.
with out those... its not worth it IMHO

It is...but you have to be careful.

Tivo nowdays will instruct your dvr that your subscription has been cancelled/ended and you cant use it anyway.

However, if you cancel/close after you unplug your dvr from the internet connection (phone/network) you can use it to manually schedule programs based on time and channel.

Sucks that they brick it if you don't subscribe. Good to know there's a way around it though. I'll have to look into this more.

My VCR doesn't have any of those features either. All I want is to get something that'll replace my VCR but be less dumb. A $10 DVR more than satisfies the need. I realize those are handy features but I can live without it.

The service is well worth the $/mo. For me at least, my two TiVos are still cheaper than 1 DVR from my cable company.

DirectTV offers it as an upgrade for monthly rental for the equipment. I think it runs about $5/month per DVR.

I just called 2 of our RadioShacks...and the SINGLE tuner is 49.99...NOT the dual tuner. They dual tuner is $99.99 after a $150 rebate.

The one you speak of for $50...is that the single or dual tuner?

You may want to look at amazon if you need dual tuner. (Buy both and Save). It comes with a Tivo $100 Gift Card. It may make it a better deal. Please read the fine print, especially the MIR for either deal. There's pages and pages about this thread at FW, you know, obese man's purse.

I bit on this deal over the weekend. It is my first Tivo ever. I got home, read the pamphlet and realized that I don't have a land-line home phone to activate the service. My only option is the wireless route. Can I use any USB wireless adapter or do I have to cough up another $40 for the official Tivo wireless USB network adapter?

Why not just plug it into your router with cat5 cable? There is a jack for it on the back.

No. Check here. I thought it had a ethernet jack but single tuner doesn't. So I'm using a land line.

I also though the single tuner had the ethernet port. Opened the box up to realize it didn't and was not looking forward to running the phone line along the baseboards. Then did a search and discovered my long ago purchased DWL-122 (DLink) wireless card was suported.

Now, knowing my luck, it would be weeks before I found it (I'm not the most organized person), but decided to look anyway. It was actually in the first place I looked, and actually worked with my box. Impressive since there are 2 floors in between my router and the usb dongle (and the usb dongle never had great reception when used with desktop computers). Did have to do a firmware upgrade, but TIVO box did that itself.

Well, I called all three Radio Shacks in my area and none of them carry TiVo equipment.

I wonder if I could get one from somewhere else and still have the rebate apply.

I'm going to e-mail someone at TiVo to find out.

Edit: I reviewed all of the stores here, and the only store I have in my location is Best Buy. So, they're my last hope.

Interesting they try to nix your DVR if you cancel the sub. Ill remember that when I cancel my sub for the series 2 downstairs when I replace it with a HD-TIVO this christmas.

Ill take it off the network before cancelling so I can still use it as a plain jane dvr upstairs on the TV in my bedroom.

Someone said that won't work with the Series 2 (that after a few weeks of not being connected, it'll stop working). Apparently, you could use Series 1 with version 2 software as a standalone dvr after cancelling TiVo service.

Does the latest TiVo firmware upgrade happen to add WPA2 wireless encryption support?
