What's better? I have a IBM 40GNX (5400RPM, 8MB) right now that I just grabbed from Googlegear last weekend. I was under the impression that the 40GNX was unbeatable.

just put up the review.....

the 40gnx is still the fastest, but for $30 less i'll wait a second more... they are quite close...

So how's your 40gnx performance? Is it good as advertised? Noisy level?
Anyone got bad review for the IBM 40gnx?

Just grab one from googlegear few hours ago, if somebody verify that it is as bad as their deskstar (I experienced it myself 5times!!), then I'll cancel the order and grab this deal instead.

Somebody pls enlighten me...

Less spin = less power consumption .. makes sense...
But why the benchmark said it wrote slower @ 128k random write? really confuses me...

so what's the 16Mb cache good for if the performance is still lagging behind?
inAccurate benchmark -or- excessive buffer design?

I have a review I'll post tomorrow unless someone else does.

It compares the:

IBM 40GNX - 40GB - 8mb cache - 5400rpm
IBM 60GH - 60GB - 2mb cache - 5400rpm
Toshiba - 40GB - 16mb cache - 5400rpm.

summary of review......IBM 40GNX is fastest, toshiba 2nd, ibm 60gh 3rd.

Also, I've used the 40gb 16mb cache toshiba in my laptop, the IBM 40GNX 40GB, and the Ibm 60GH (briefly). All drives were new in box for testing at my work except the 60GH...it had about 6 months of normal use on it.

I would say the 40GNX feels faster than the other two. Seeks can be heard, but not loud. Spindle noise is minimal.
The Toshiba sounds like a fairly normal drive, but not quite as responsive as the 40GNX.
The IBM 60GH is just a beast. It's heavy (1/3 more than others), full 12.5mm height, bearing noise WILL develop like all travelstar HD's after months (non-fluid bearing), and seeks are much louder than the other two drives.

My $.02.

Edit: Here's the link to the review.

Still

Haha.. I guess this thread is not much into "technical discussion", while everybody is busy trying to get the deal before AT effects kicks in..

So I guess I'll post the queries to a more appropriate "Peripheral" or "Highly Technical" topic.
Whoever interested in the topic between IBM 40Gnx and Toshiba 40GAX, let us meet there

I am also in the market for a fast 40 GB notebook drive. I hope that #ell decides to offer the 40gnx....

VezZiE,

I just put a 40GB GNX into my IBM T21 a few weeks ago and absolutely love it! It's quieter than the 4200 RPM 20GB HD that the lappy came with which also is an IBM Travelstar. No problems with that drive for the past year and a half. As the previous posters have mentioned, you hear a little of the drive during seeks like most other drives but it's not what I would deem noisy.

The GNX is noticeably faster than the old one (especially noticeable when launching apps). Bootups and shutdowns are about the same (Win2k Pro).

Got mine through googlegear.com as well, a great place to deal with; the packaging was the best I've ever encountered with mail order: the OEM drive was in a factory sealed anti-static bag, wrapped in a thick layer of bubble wrap, encased in a box stuffed to the hilt with styrofoam peanuts...oh they even included an invoice!

How does this drive compare to the IBM 60gig Travelstar drive at Dell for $183 shipped? The 60gig has only 2mb cache but it is 5400rpm. I will try and find a link to the thread.

Here it is: Link

EDIT: The 60gig at the above link is a refurb Guess that answers my question.

Does anyone know how this drive compares to the IBM 40GNX with respect to noise level. I have a Hitachi in my Inspiron 4100 that clicks like mad!
