the shelf tag in the store (eden prarie, mn) said $20 and $30 rebates... i ordered online (i'm just up here working) to send one home... guess i could have used the 10% off b&m thing, but i don't want to carry the drive around...

I picked mine up at BB store. Got the $31 deal as advertised. No dual layer however. Theshelf was marked with the error and all the boxes came with the 20 DVD inside. Argued a bit but hard to ask for DL disks when 20 are already in the box. Also i noticed no DL disks for sale on the shelf.

Picked up one and returned it later on. The sales rep I talked about brought a pack of dualy and made me excited a sec. He tried to sell 3 pack of dualy for 10 dollars rather than exchanging dvd-r with dualy or what so ever. What a dope!
Well, it might have been a really hot deal though.

Is the burner itself suppose to have a seal or sticker on it, because mine had none. My box was opened before, but it was the only one left.

In San Diego, the advertised price AR's is $39.99, and like mentioned above, they substituted 2 10 packs of the Verbatim DL's.....smoking deal, especially since the 10 pack of DVR+R DL was $35 (although I would never pay that).

There's a lot of reports of opened boxes on SD. No one knows why, but the theory is that people (or employees?) are going through them looking for the ones with the dual layer dvds in the box (which dont exist).

I'm bumping this because I now have a link in the OP to a scan of the retail insider where it says they can substitute the verbatim dual layer. So this should help people to get the dual layer dvds.

To the OP: No, you can't return and rebuy something ordered online. It's an inventory thing (A replacement is sent from the warehouse for the in-store pickup rather than a reimbursement). It REALLY complicates things when you get a defective product and the price is more expensive in-store than online or has gone up at both.

Then why have I read about someone else doing it? For that matter, I think I've done it in the past.

That's because you either purchased it in-store or people were talking about elsewhere.

It sure did! Thanks. I stopped by while I was out at an appointment and mentioned that it was in their corporate newsletter so they broke out a folder and all we could find was stuff about them admitting and retracting the error but nothing about honoring it. I went home, printed it out and went back and they honored it even though I told them that it came from the Internet and I was relying on them to confirm it. Strangely enough, this is the same drive they've had out there since early Sunday afternoon when I didn't attempt purchasing it because I was told that it wasn't being honored. It was the only one and it didn't have the other DVD-Rs inside (No sticker either) I had the coupon but I didn't press the issue about how they should have honored it yesterday when I first confirmed the drive in-stock so I was still entitled to the 10% discount and yadda yadda. The Retail Insider is dated the 17th while the retraction is dated 18th so why were we not aware of them honoring it first?

Because its BB. The ones who arrest you for paying in $2 bills. The managers make up stuff and lie all the time. Heck some of them have said that they dont care what corporate says (even if you get a customer support guy on the phone to talk with them), its thier store and they can do wtf they want. The likely answer is more benign, they dont bother reading stuff from corporate all that much lol.
Just look at the 2nd xbox big sale at bb. They were supposed to start selling the xboxs at a certain time on sunday, AND the retail insider had stuff about how we know some issues happened with the launch with best buy's opening early or selling early or giving out tickets the day before for them, or forcing people to buy extra games/accessories to get an xbox, and it said no one is supposed to do that stuff this time. Yet again some sold them early, opened early, gave out tickets day before, etc etc. And thats a pretty big thing to not listen to corporate about. Corporate had been dealing with complaints about people who stood in line for the sunday opening for an xbox on launch and some stores didn't have any, the people didn't get any because they sold them early or gave out tickets the day before.

Anyway, yeah apparently some drives didn't have the dvds inside. And those aren't the ones in the ad, the ones with the dvd drives inside have a sticker about dvds inside the box. I'm guessing the ones without are older stock.

Glad you got in on the deal!

Check the packaging -- if it says Made in Japan, they are manufactured by Taiyo Yuden, which is among the very best quality media. It is indeed a great price for BB. Every few weeks or so they usually have 50 packs for $14.99 (2 for $29.98... so I guess that'd be even hotter). Like last week they had it.

You may also consider buying a 100 pack of authentic TY DVD-R's for $27.90 (after 10% off coupon) here:
http://www.shop4tech.com/user.htm?go=view_item&id=3007&cata=1&s_cata=88

I ordered from them a couple weeks ago. Took a week to ship (free though), but all discs burn flawlessly at 8x in my NEC 3520A. Some people are actually receiving 16x media even though the product says 4x. Details here:

YES, I got the 2 x 10pack verbatim dl dvd's along with the 20 SL TDK's. The shelf tag did say it was an ad mistake. Any how, first I tried to get the dual layer discs without using the internal memo and the manager said no. Then I threw the internal memo in his face and told him to look at it, then he changed his mind. He looked quite upset that I got the memo and took it.

On Sun, I got a 15pk of Memorex DL as a substitution--after 45minutes of waiting in multiple lines. That said, when they finally re-rang it up, the girl took the $34.99 off the price of the DVD player instead of making the media $0.0x. I suspect BB will now try and reject the $30 rebate due to the price adjustment.

Argh.

This one ain't over for me.

Just got back from Best Buy .

Got the DL disks, but when she rang everything up, only the $30 Best Buy rebate printed out.

Asked the CSR about the $20 Plextor rebate and she told me it expired yesterday 12/19/05.

At that point, the CSRs had been so accomdating that I couldn't ask them to cancel everything (guess I still got a decent deal).

EDIT: there are still some $5 review bonuses available at Pricegrabber.com for this drive. Just click on the $20 rebate and the $5 will also show up.

EDIT #2: just found a Plextor rebate that is still valid:

Ok thanks I linked the rebate. I'll put info about the $5 bonus.

For people who have already bought the drive you can potentially get another $5 off of it. If you missed out on the 10% coupon, this will make up for more than half of it And if you used the 10% coupon, you could potentially get this drive for $26 AR!!!

Look in the Fat Wallet link above.

Whether or not you get the dual layer disks for free probably just depends on the store / store manager you get. I say pick up the correct items off of the shelve, then go to customer service and politely ask them if they will honor their corporate office's correction of the typo. If not, I would just leave without creating a scene and try another store.

So far nearly ALL of the people using that retail insider memo have been able to get DL disks from reports I've seen in this thread and in the SD thread (I've read all 20+ pages, the retail insider usage starts around page 15 or 18 or so). Including people who purchased it days earlier and went back after printing the scan to get the disks.
Probably because BB managers cant pretend it doesn't exist when you are waving it in thier faces.

Thanks for all the links OP! I went in today, and they had a sign on the shelf that was advertising the drive at $39.99 AR. Only the $30 MIR prints out now, so I complained, and they took off the $20 in store. So now, this is an EVEN HOTTER DEAL, if you send in the second $20 rebate and if you can get the store to drop the $20 - makes it $20 + TAX AMIR!!! Not too bad!

i tried gettin in on this deal but the first store I went to didnt have any of the drives left. 2nd store I went to had some drives left so i grabbed one and asked the rep if he would honor the original deal. He started his whole speal about how they fixed the ad. At that point i told him about the retail insider. He immediately got quiet started asking me a 1000 questions about how I got this since I am not an employee. Told him thats beside the point and if he would adhere to his corporate memo. He went off with the retail insider printout (to talk to his manager i guess) and came back 5 mins later saying that he would have to honor it, but he doesnt have any verbatim 10 packs left . All he has left is a 25 pack and I aint having that.

Later I did see that they had 3 packs. wonder if i can get some of those instead....
gonna try again tomorrow

You could buy it and go back later with the info when they are in-stock. You could "discover" that it didn't have what it was supposed to have in the mean-time
