Ah crud, I didn't notice I grabbed the black bezel one. Is that all that qualifies for the rebate? I could actually have used a silver one, don't know if they had one with a different bezel in store...

Never mind, looks like only the black one has the rebates...

I just noticed the circular says DL disks - I may rattle their cage one more time, it may be worth the effort...

Print out that Retail Insider from the first post... Makes it much easier! If they ask questions just say that it came from "the Internet" (Nothing specific) and ask that they confirm it for you. State that if they can't confirm it you will call the 1-888-BESTBUY number from your cell-phone.

I'm bumping because someone in SD figured out that you can ask them for $20 additional off at register since the $20 BB rebate doesn't print (expired 19th), and there are reports of people being able to get the $20 off at register. BUT you can then send in the plextor $20 rebate from the plextor website (since its the only one that requires original UPC), so potentially you can get this for $15 AR with free dual layer dvds!!! HOTTEST dvd drive deal I've ever seen!

In fact its hot even if you are a rebate hater. If you got the $20 off at register, and filed the very easy online electronic $30 rebate that doesn't need any copies of anything or anything mailed in, just type in your receipt info, you could get the drive and DVDs for $40 with NO MAIL IN REBATES!!

Note: The original guy took down the scan, so I edited the OP with another link.

It's probably the compatibility with the media.
Try using the recommended media by Plextor

freezing during firmware upgrade isnt good heh. Did you check the version of the firmware on the drive? Often new retail drives will already have latest firmware.

Also, make sure its not in PIO mode.

Odds are its like the guy above me said, it doesn't like that media.

in nero, how do i found out what is the firmware version of the plextor?
i read the faq on the plextor.com site, and it said i should disable the dma mode before i do the firmware update. btw, what does PIO stands for?

the media i am using is maxell 16x, and it's MIJ that i got from OD a couple of months ago.

Depends on the version of nero. On mine I goto RECORDER, CHOOSE RECORDER, and it shows the firmware revision there.

As for DMA and PIO mode, normally you want DMA mode for everything except special situations (like if plextor says you need PIO mode for firmware update). Thats found in device manager, under IDE controllers, then your primary/secondary whichever the cd drive is on. Then you click advanced settings. It will show current mode and you can change the desired mode.

Also you may want to check here:
http://www.videohelp.com/dvdwriters.php...eid=1139&Search=Search&list=2#comments
There are reports on what media works with what drives. It might or might not help.

thanks; my plex firmware is 1.01. What brand of media do you use in order to burn @ 16x?

1.01 is the latest official firmware. So you should be set there, as long as that failed firmware update attempt didn't mess up the drive.
As for media, I haven't purchased any 16x media yet. I'm going to use up all this 8x stuff from sales at BB (got 75 DVDR for $3), compusa, CC, etc. 4x takes like 14 mins, 8x takes like 8 mins, and 16x takes around 6 mins. Personally I dont think those 2 mins are worth the extra cost of 16x media yet It would actually be faster to burn two 8x dvds with 2 burners simultaneously than for a single 16x dvd burner to burn two 16x dvds

If you look at the 10th page of the first review in the OP:
http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Reviews/Specific.aspx?ArticleId=14345&PageId=10
You'll see a number of media types they tested. Most burned at the rated 16x speed but there was one that didn't.
Oddly enough the maxell says it worked fine at 16x, so your maxell must be made by a differant disk maker. If you really wanted to check into it, you could find out the media code to see if that matches the ones they tested. I'm not sure what tool to use to find that out though.

Take it back then. Some boxes have them some dont. And the ones that do only have single layer dvds, you have to go to a bit of trouble to get the dual layers. Also make sure to ask for the extra $20 off at register.

"Also make sure to ask for the extra $20 off at register."
I think this one is YMMV; what one csr did may not be store policy. You can probably point out that the price label on the shelf does show $39.xx AR and politely ask whether they will discount $20 because of that error, but I'm guessing it is YMMV (after all, their Sunday flyer doesn't even mention this Plextor rebate).

I did read on another forum, however, a tactic that might be effective:

"After talking to the customer service manager who didn't want to help me, I called 888-BESTBUY and talked to someone at corporate. I explained the situation to them and they sent an email to the manager and a couple minutes later I was on my way out of the store with my 20 verb dl's and the CS manager appologizing.
That's the key - if they won't work with you, call 888-BESTBUY and get them to send an email or call the manager with the info."

Personally, I would be straightforward and honest with the csr/store manager (i.e. present the copy of the Retail Insider immediately) and ask them whether they will honor their corporate office's correction of the ad error. If not, politely ask to use their phone to call their corporate offices to see if they can rectify the situatiion (this way you give the store manager an option to avoid getting a call from corporate).

WHAT they did AT STORE #149 WAS BAIT & SWITCH... IF TAKING ALL THE TDKs FROM THE BOXES IN THE FIRST PLACE IS NOT BAIT AND SWITCH, I DON'T KNOW WHAT IS...
BUDDY, you didn't understand me the first time maybe> ALL BOXES... NOT ONLY MY BOX, ALL BOXES... I PERSONALLY SAW THEM OPEN ALL BOXES AT THE SHELF WHILE I WAS THERE AND CHECK, AND THERE WERE NO TDK DVDrs IN ALL THEY OPENED

Picked up the drive and two packs of the verbatem DLs. Went to customer service, showed her the add and the corp memo. She rang it up at 89.99, and the discs at .01 per pack. Paid by check so no credit card adjustment possible. The machine only kicked out the 30.00 rebate. I politely told her the shelf sign was 39.99 AR. Showed her and got 20.00 back. Guess what? Now gonna go for the 30.00 and the plextor online 20.00

Boy do I love the holidays. Gonna be a great gift for someone I love.........ME!!

Do the boxes have a little sticker on them that says 20 TDK dvds including inside? If so, then yeah someone is taking out the dvds, but it could be just some jerk shoplifter. Its quite possible though that your BB only had the ones without the dvds, thats the older version of the box. Perhaps they didn't get any of the new version of the box in for sale with the dvds inside.

However, regardless, you should be able to at minimum talk them into letting you have 20 dvds of some sort because your box didn't have any. If you use retail insider you might get dual layer.

Went back after Sunday purchase with .PDF to claim my dual layer disks. No questions asked they rang the 2 x 10 pack of verbatim dual layer disks at 1 cent and let me keep the 20 TDK disks as well. Good job Best Buy. Felt good about that company last night!

Went in today, they were out of the 10 paks, so they gave me one Memorex 25 pak! I overheard a manager talk to the CSR about this - he was saying keep the little "sorry for the misprint" sign around, but take care of this one (me), because they do not want to give free DL DVDs to everybody. Can't say I blame them, these Memorex puppies ring up at $80 (can't be worth that much - weren't these DL DVDs down to about $1 per DVD?). One hell of a deal, I'm still sending in the 2 rebates for $50, after getting the drive for $70 + tax, not to mention the 20 TDK DVD-Rs. Yowza!

Well they are memorex, most of the cheap DLs are no name brands you can order off the net. And most of the B&M sales for them involve manufacture rebates. It wouldn't surprise me at all to learn that BB's actual cost is $50+ for an $80 DL pack.

Just scored mine! No problem getting two 10 packs of Verbatim DL's. Didn't even have to use any of the ammo I brought to argue with. Just asked for my DVD's that were not in the box. THANKS.

I'm the "original guy" with the PDF. I chose to take it down after already costing Best Buy around $30,000 from hosting it. (1200 views and I figure 400 people actually went ot BB and used it. 400x$70 = $28,000). If anyone else needs it PM me with your email address.
